But Monster needs to scare someone…it’s a monster, after all. So, while Tiger sleeps, Monster scares all of her nightmares away. Thanks to her friend, Tiger has nothing but good dreams. But waiting in the darkness is a nightmare so big and mean that Monster can’t fight it alone. Only teamwork and a lot of bravery can chase this nightmare away.”

Tiger vs. Nightmare was a big hit with both my 8-year-old and 3-year-old! At its core, it’s a story about facing your fears, being brave, and working together. What makes this story so fun is how animated the characters are. This book doesn’t have a ton of words which allows the kids to fill the gap with their imagination and became the narrators of the story. Tiger vs. Nightmare is an awesome read!

Book Summary from Amazon:

“Every kid in Lola's school was from somewhere else. Hers was a school of faraway places. So, when Lola's teacher asks the students to draw a picture of where their families immigrated from, all the kids are excited. Except Lola. She can't remember The Island—she left when she was just a baby. But with the help of her family and friends, and their memories—joyous, fantastical, heartbreaking, and frightening—Lola's imagination takes her on an extraordinary journey back to The Island. As she draws closer to the heart of her family's story, Lola comes to understand the truth of her abuela's words: “Just because you don't remember a place doesn't mean it's not in you.”

As a mom who actively seeks out books with diverse characters, this book was pure joy! Like many of us, Lola doesn’t know much at all about her country of origin. She seeks out stories from the elders in her family and friends from her neighborhood to discover more about her first country - both the good and the bad. The author tells a history story in the most fun and magical way. We loved reading this story.

Verdict: The Prime Book Box comes in its own specially designed book box featuring fun kid-friendly characters. It’s very cute and my daughter gets excited when this box is delivered because she knows it’s just for her. This month’s selections were both awesome, engaging and age-appropriate.

The most fantastic aspect of both books this month was the stunning illustrations. In Tiger vs. Nightmare, there are pages and pages of just illustration that brings the story to life. In Islandborn, the illustrations are so vibrant and meticulously detailed. I was especially impressed at all kinky and coily hairstyles and haircuts. Every scene is captured in full detail. Both books are great and engaging stories that are wonderfully illustrated. I highly recommend these books.
