New Beauty Test Tube September October beauty subscription box review

NewBeauty TestTube is a bi-monthly beauty and makeup subscription box. Every other month they send you a tube full of deluxe and full-size beauty samples and you also get a digital subscription to NewBeauty Magazine. It’s a little pricier than other beauty subscriptions, but in general, the value is usually great.

Our September/October 2019 Review

NewBeauty TestTube is one of my favorite subs because they send really unique and new items, many of which I have never even heard of! This booklet is a great reference for each item we received this month. It is full of additional info, interesting facts, and editor commentary.

Now, on to the items!

Curology The Cleanser and Free Month Trial, 40 ml - Estimated Value $35

Let's begin with a brand I absolutely love! Curology is basically the perfect subscription for anyone who wants to add prescription level anti-aging to their routine but doesn't want to pay for dermatologist visits or high priced RX creams. You fill out a questionnaire and submit a few photos of your face and an actual dermatologist looks everything over and helps you create a treatment plan. They send you a customized blend of prescription level ingredients mixed into a cream each month for under $20. You can also upgrade to the $30 plan that includes a moisturizer and this cleanser for around $30. Included with this cleanser is a link you can use to access a free month of this service, though you do have to pay $4.95 shipping. I used to use this subscription for a year or so before I started reviewing, and I HIGHLY recommend it.

As far as this cleanser goes, it is unscented and super gentle, perfect for a deep clean without any negatives. I couldn't find a way to purchase just this cream, so I was unable to calculate an estimated value, though if you sign up for the monthly trial that came with it, that has a value of close to $35 after shipping costs.

amika Reset Exfoliating Jelly Shampoo, 4.7 fl oz - Full Size! Retail Value $25.00

My husband Will has really developed into somewhat of a shampoo snob since I started reviewing boxes. He has very specific parameters for rating shampoos and conditioners now that actually put mine to shame. amika is one of his preferred conditioners, so I suspected he might like this shampoo, especially since it has both clay and salt, meaning it gives a super deep cleanse. We both like squeaky clean scalps! He gave this two thumbs up and wanted me to specifically say that he liked the salt because it provided "scrubbiness" without leaving any exfoliants in his hair. He still says this is his favorite, but this amika shampoo was a close second.

ODE Orchard Alchemy Antioxidant Face Oil, 1 fl oz  - Full Size! Retail Value $65.00

Ahhh, this packaging. Wow. What a first impression. Aside from being gorgeous, this face oil has THIRTY different skin-loving oils inside. This is a dry skin dream, ya'll! It also smells like heavenly, herbal, floral perfection. The deep orange color did show up on my very pale face a little bit, so I will be using this exclusively at night, after a serum and likely without a moisturizer. Aside from being a stellar face oil, this stuff is made at the most dreamy ranch, complete with olive trees, a signature perfume, fresh produce, a winery, honey, homemade jams, and stunning event spaces. Is McEvoy Ranch heaven or what?

BRB moving to the ranch.

Nuria Defend Skin Shielding Essence, 1.7 fl oz - Full Size! Retail Value $48.00

Wow! This has to be some of the best packaging collected into a single NBTT! I absolutely love the Nuria brand. I have tried their eye cream and face wash before and I was impressed with both formulas, along with the swoon-worthy packaging. Who says you can't have both, right? This stuff is so cool. The texture is a totally clear gel and inside there are cute little peach-colored orbs and gold flakes. This is a defense sort of formula filled with detoxing ginseng, nourishing carob, and one of my faves: seaweed! I like to use this in the morning after cleansing and before moisturizing. It gives my skin a little boost and helps with product absorption and dispersion, meaning I use less of my pricy moisturizers!

Batiste Dry Shampoo, 200 ml - Full Size! Retail Value $8.99

I have used this brand of dry shampoo for years, despite the fact that the first ingredient is butane. It just works SO well, and what is life without a little danger, right? Maybe not, but the effectiveness and accessible pricing of this stuff make it hard to resist. I only shampoo twice a week so dry shampoo is a necessity in my day to day routine. This fragrance is really warm and musky, a nice sexy scent that will complement most perfumes instead of overpowering it.

Hydrafacial Dermabuilder

Meh, this is the bummer part of the review. When I saw the spoilers, I realized a lot of people would have *feelings* about its inclusion. It kind of sucks to get an item that only subscribers in California can use right? (Unless I am missing a section of Hydrafacial providers?) This will likely end up in the trash for a lot of us, but before mine made it there, I thought I had a duty to force it open and at least tell you the consistency and scent. Right? Right! I don't enjoy being unable to provide you with info on an item. It bothers me! I also don't recommend opening your vial at home because it was REALLY difficult and not at all fun. Inside I found a clear watery substance with not a ton of scent. The texture was extremely slippy.

Here is an artistic photo of it literally slipping through my fingers, much like the Hydrafacial experience.

Probiogen Daily Digestive Balance Probiotic, 30 capsules - Retail Value $29.95

I turned 33 this year, and much to my dismay, I am significantly less "regular" all of a sudden. A friend suggested a probiotic and lo and behold, one arrived in this month's tube! These contain some sort of special spore that survives in guts longer. Cool! I have only been taking these for a day, so I don't have any real results to report on, but hopefully, this will be an improvement to my movement!

Mass Eden Facial Steam, 4 pouches - Retail Value $16.00

Facial steams are one of those treatments that feel more like a ritual than just skincare. They are also one of the treatments than really freak my husband out because they require me to sit with my head over a hot pot of fragrant water covered by a towel. What he doesn't understand is that this steam is opening my pores and making me feel extremely fancy. I always finish off a steam with a glass of wine, as any truly fancy person should.

Verdict: NewBeauty TestTube is always a subscription I look forward to. In my opinion, it really shines when it combines well-known and effective brands with new emerging ones. This tube was a perfect example of this! Along with some newbies, this month delivered two of my favorites, amika and Nuria, though both of the products from these lines were new to me. The standouts were easily the Nuria essence and ODE oil, though Will would argue it was the shampoo. Either way, we are both happy!

Again, this sub is awesome for discovering new brands, but I am always tickled when I see a familiar one (or two!) in the mix. Without calculating the values of the Hydrafacial formula and the Curology cleanser (I couldn't find a retail value for the cleanser alone) this box still has a value of $192.94 which is good for a $38.90 box. This goes up to $217.94 if you choose to try out Curology (a trial value of $29.95 - $4.95 shipping).

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? It appears at sign-up that this box is still available for purchase. However, make sure to email [email protected] before you order to confirm which box will be your first shipment.

Value Breakdown: At $38.90 for this box (including shipping), and assuming a retail value of $192.94, here’s what you are paying approximately per item:

  • Curology Cleanser and trial $N/A (potentially $25: $29.95 kit minus $4.95 shipping)
  • amika Shampoo $5.04
  • ODE Oil $13.11
  • Nuria Essence $9.68
  • Batiste Dry Shampoo $1.81
  • Hydrafacial Dermabuilder $N/A
  • Probiogen Supplements $6.04
  • Mass Eden Facial Steam $3.23

Alternatively, each of the 8 items in this box has an average cost of $4.86.

If you are disregarding the Hydrafacial Dermabuilder, that average cost rises to $5.56.

I love natural/vegan beauty products, Korean skincare, unique jewelry, and weird candies from far away places. When I am not waiting for my next exciting box you can find me painting or taking photographs of interesting people. I never leave home without pug hair somewhere on my shirt and a bold lipstick on my smile.

I also received a damaged dry shampoo in the transit and contacted customer service. They are sending me the replacement. So far my interaction with CS is no problem. Sorry for others with negative experiences. I am excited to try curology because I haven’t tried anything like that with personal customization/formula. I am in NYC and I only found like 2 places that I “might” be able to use Hydrofacial… but I already have a very reasonable facial salon to go, so I am sure it will be so out of my budget… I will offer to my friend in CA and see if she is interested.

Hi Megan – I don’t understand what is going on with the Hydrafacial website, but it is not just something that people in CA can use. I’ve had a Hydrafacial at Hull Dermatology in Rogers, AR. On the Hydrafacial website, if I type in Rogers, AR, the location shows up. I would encourage people to try typing in the city and state. I still don’t think it’s great to include in a sub box because you have to incur a cost to properly use it, but the facials are available outside of CA.

Reply ButtonReply

Amber

This is correct! I wanted to research this before I bought this TT. I live in the Pittsburgh area and get them done here. I think there may be some confusion because I don’t think all hydrafacial locations are included in this TT promo. For example, I know certain places offer it, but it doesn’t come up in the search…but the place that I go to does show up on the search.

Check this link: https://hydrafacialnation.com/newbeauty/

Also, every time you change the area or mile radius you have to hit search again, it doesn’t auto-update…which may sound like a silly remark, but I’m used to sites automatically doing that for me 😛

Reply ButtonReply

Julia

Thanks for the info, Amber. Maybe the place that I went just isn’t accepting the promo. I just got nervous that some people might throw something away or crack it open because the website wasn’t working properly.

Renee

NBTT CS has always been amazing for me. It is definitely one of my favorite boxes. I skipped this one because I didn’t really need more facial oil, but really wish I had not now!

Disappointed

This test tube was a total miss for me. Wish I had skipped. I really hated this curation of products. Serum we use for an expensive, unavailable facial, herbs for a steam? 50 cents at the grocery store, a cleanser that if we like we have to subscribe to get? And dry shampoo found at discount stores for 3 bucks. Disappointed.

Preetam Singareddy

Some of you might have had a terrible experience with their customer service, and I don’t mean to discredit any of it.
But, I had good experience with their customer service. One of my products in an earlier box arrived damaged, and they were prompt in sending in a replacement. They were also quick to cancel my subscription when I was downgrading my boxes in general.

After enduring Allure beauty box’s horrible and rude customer service, the New beauty customer service doesn’t seem too bad.

Just want to comment on my experiences with CS, which have always been positive. I’ve been an off and on subscriber for a while and have never had any issues when calling them to either hold a tube or cancel. Haven’t tried emailing – I always call and it’s been quick and easy. I’m tempted to re-subscribe for this tube but can’t really afford it right now.

Liz I think it’s time for a disclaimer about this subscription. After 12 phone calls with messages left over 3 months and numerous emails requesting to cancel they still ignored me and continued to bill me. I finally had to have my bank block them from anymore charges. I see that this is happening to others as well. The customer service rep hers just keeps posting a form message about contacting them but it simply doesn’t work. Please consider a disclaimer.

Miranda

Help me if I missed it. I see ‘curology and trial’. I do not want to be locked into an “if I dont cancel’ trial. Are we?

Not unless you sign up for the trial from Curology.

Testtube,
I am very disappointed in your customer service. I have been trying to cancel my subscription since July to no avail. I have tried emailing my request and also leaving at least two voicemails on your phone line (the one posted on your site for cancellations). I have given my name, email address, phone number, and reason for my call (needing to cancel due to financial hardship), but no one has gotten back to me despite my repeated requests for someone to get in touch with me. Nor has my account been cancelled, so I have been billed again.

I just don’t know what to think, and again, I am very disappointed to be ignored…and concerned.

TestTube

Tracy,

We value our customer’s concerns, and we apologize for what happened. Can you please provide us with more information so we can make things right.

Nanci

Happened to me as well. 12 phone calls and numerous emails. I finally had to have my bank block them. Liz needs to add a disclaimer to this sub.

Brooke

Yup. Seems like the one person who is manning that customer support line has been making responses on every comment on this thread versus actually answering their phone, chat or emails.. I wish you luck; best advice I can give is call your bank and explain that this company isn’t offering a way to cancel and they will block charges going forward as fraud. Sounds like it’s 50/50 and we got the bad side of the coin. Good luck!

Ania1234

Probably the worst customer service I have ever encountered. I called back in May to cancel June box and was offered a gift with purchase, Sunday Riley tonner. I was charged on June 6th and received a shipping number for the toner, but after over two months the tracking still shows pending which means this item never shipped. Few days after I was charged for the June box, I was charged again the exactly same amount. I called their customer service and spoke to Jason on multiple occasions telling him that I have never received the toner and that I was charged twice. His explanation was that the second charge was for the September box ( which I never authorized). It took 5 phone calls to have the non authorized charges refunded.
I still have not received the promised Sunday Riley gift with purchase. I would caution everyone to do any business with this company and do not trust them when they promise you any special deals.

Reply ButtonReply

Tracy F

This concerns me that someone else has had difficulty with their customer service. I have tried since July to cancel my account to no avail. I have not gotten responses to emails and I have never been able to get in contact with a live person any of the times I have called. I got a voicemail message prompting me to leave a message and they would get back to me, but no one has called me back after leaving at least 2 messages. And yes, it has been plenty of time in between messages to expect a response.

Reply ButtonReply

m

OMG, THANK YOU for pointing this out! I cancelled earlier this year for the same reason! I had been missing a product from last October and had gone back and forth being promised repeatedly that a replacement was on its way. I kept having to reach back out for updates. Finally, in Feb or March, after a new series of multiple back and forths with Steve in their Customer Service, he claimed I never had an account with them! I provided all of my info after having been a sub for at lest a full year prior, and even provided the emails fro the prior CS agents saying my product was being sent out. He was cold and completely a BAD LOOK for the company, still insisting he could not locate me in the system. It as so annoying, I finally gave up, even though I never even received the product they still owed me. He claimed that with their system update & site overhaul I was no longer in the system. Suuure, Steve. Suuure. 🙄

I really want to resub, but wont because of how difficult they were and their lack of follow thru and honoring their promises.

They are saying they strive for 100% satisfaction, but they failed me repeatedly.

I love my tube! I think right now it is a best sub for skin care. Not only it provides great value, it has everything else:
– discovery (every tube something new), not an items that appears in every sub like Dr. Brandt, glam glow, murad, SR etc.
– variety (it covers you from head to toe and from inside out). I love how it includes supplements, face steamer and other non “traditional” skin care items.
– full size product (most of them)
– none to zero make up (there is some occasional make up items)
– value
I think this subscription is amazing.

Hi! Thank you for your kind review, we’re glad you are enjoying your TestTube ☺

This was my first tube, and I started the subscription because I wanted to try that shampoo and always need more probiotics.

As soon as I opened my tube, I was taken aback by the strong smell that Megan describes as “heavenly.” I, on the other hand, was like, “Get this away from me!” I was interested in the oil, but after smelling it (without opening the bottle), I am very much on the fence as I just really don’t know if I want to smell that on my face.

I’m excited about my first tube, but it is going to be a mix of keepers and swappers for me.

Hi!
We are so sorry you weren’t impressed by the scent of our ORCHARD ALCHEMY ANTIOXIDANT FACE OIL ☹ It is an early harvest organic olive oil that delivers powerful polyphenol antioxidant protection to ones skin. It also contains high levels of readily absorbable squalene that is meant to soothe, restore, and heal. Hopefully, the benefits we promote with our product encourages you to give it a try 😊

This is my first Test Tube & I think it was fantastic! I will use or gift everything in here, even the facial vial. My niece is a cosmetologist & the salon where she works does these types of facials. I cannot justify the $100 facial, but at least it won’t add to the landfills. Megan- I loved the part in the review about the facial steam & now I feel that I too, need to have a glass of wine to add to the fanciness when I use it.

Tracy

Umm, I have tried emailing and calling you several times since July to no avail. I have not gotten an email reply either time and no one answers the phone any of the times I have called. I was prompted to leave voicemails, so I have left detailed voicemails, but no one has ever called me back despite my pleas of desperation due to financial hardship. My account was charged anyway despite my original request being ample time in advance to cancel.

Brooke

False. I have the screen shots of every email and chat I attempted and recordings of all the voicemails I left over 9 days with no results. I really hope this is a turning point and a kick in the butt you need to actually provide customer service but I subscription to 10 boxes and yours is the only one I’ve needed to warn others on based on how I was treated.

Brooke

Also just to prove my point – if you’re a subscriber call that number and see how many times a person picks up (answer… will be 0).

Brooke

That’s absolutely not true… It took me two weeks trying every single day to cancel my subscription. I have the screenshots, recorded voicemails, and screen captures of my failed attempts of contacting via customer chat that I would love to provide. Like I said before, I loved the product but when it came time to cancel my subscription because I needed to save money I had the worst time I’ve ever had with any company I’ve ever communicated with. Maybe that’s not everybody’s experience… And I really hope it’s not… But this is my personal experience with your company and I was extremely disappointed to the point where I feel I need to share it with others. I hope this message gets to you and you re-look at your customer service and support and fix some of these problems for others. Truly a TERRIBLE experience.

brooke

I just want to share with everyone here my experience on cancelling with this company. I loved the box but needed to cancel to save some money…

I called them 9 business days in a row (left voicemails… no answers). I tried live chat those same 9 business days in a row. I emailed them seven times. No reply.

I had to remove my contact info from my account and contact my bank to put a stop on the payments.

I sent one last email to them today telling them that I intended to talk to the BBB and that I had already flagged them as fraud via my bank I FINALLY got my cancellation response. That’s 9 business days or two weeks of effort and having to resort to calling them fraud to be able to cancel the subscription. It was a very frustrating experience and I had to be extremely vigilant to be able to get to this end result.

Buyer be VERY wary.

Reply ButtonReply

Nat

Thank you so much for sharing your experience. This box does look interesting to me, however, I refuse to sub with a company that has such poor customer service. Thanks again. I might join if they start caring more about their customers. Always actually prefer just to cancel myself online. Calling or emailing is a hassle already.

TestTube

I emailed when I cancelled a few tubes ago. They did offer to let me skip instead and claim a free gift (gave me a list of 5 or so items to choose from) instead but I still declined since I’m just on too much product overload so adding more isn’t going to help…free or not. LOL. I suppose that’s why they don’t let you just cancel in your account online.

Reply ButtonReply

I wish they would of offered my a free gift when I canceled last box. I tired to skip but they wouldn’t let me have two Skips in a year

I can get a dermafacial here in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, but it only comes with a $50 discount and the cost that I saw was $160. Not impressed.

I *am* impressed with Will’s shampoo rating system and want to hear more.

Reply ButtonReply

Megan K.

Yeahhh not impressed with that cost. The rest of the box made up for it though. Still baffled by their map search option as I couldn’t find anything outside of CA.

Will’s system could literally take up a whole post. For a guy who doesn’t care about that sort of thing, shampoo is the exception. If I had to narrow it down to three items, they would be (in order of importance) 1. Must cause squeaky roots. 2. Must be in an easy to squeeze bottle . 3. Must make hair soft, but not “too soft”. I swear he is basically Goldilocks.

I loved this tube! I already tried the Nuria essence and I’m in love. Not only is it pretty, but so pretty! I’m excited to try everything else out.

I love Test Tube Beauty. I cancelled all other beauty subs and just get this. I actually use everything up. I didn’t like the shampoo, but maybe it’s not for my hair type. I love the Curology cleanser, I wish it were not so expensive as I would use this regularly/ The serums are amazing I’m still using items from the past box as well. For the price it’s hands down worth it for such high quality skin care.

Reply ButtonReply

Laura

Could you please tell me why you don’t like the shampoo? I want to get the tube because I need a shampoo lol!

Reply ButtonReply

Anna

This isn’t a daily shampoo though it helps remove product or hard water buildup. If you’re used to hair/scalp scrubs and like them this one is easy to apply due to the bottle tip and it gives you a nice deep clean. It’s great for once every 7-10 days

Carol

I personally love this kind of shampoo, though I’d consider it more of an exfoliant than a shampoo. I suffer from dry scalp and this kind of shampoo helps me remove the dead skin and major flakes (ugh, gross!) I’ve used the dpHue apple vinegar one and make such a mess because I cant get it to my scalp and it just falls to the floor of the tub. I love the amika one especially because of the tube, how it has a longer part that I can just move past my hair to my scalp.

cheryl s zaccone

I didn’t like the feel of it or the way it didn’t lather. But you know I only used it once so I will try it again. My hair can’t take heavy products. If you want to do a swap let me know I only used it once.
