Beauteque Mask Maven August 2019 Review

The number of sheet masks out there for sale must be incredibly large. Mask Maven almost never sends repeat items, and I discover something new every month:

The box came with this information card. This month has a “#plantbased” theme. The themes used to bear little relationship to the masks, but I really feel like they’ve been stepping it up lately and that there’s a better connection.

Mask Maven Subscription Box August 2019 - Natural Energy Mask Sheet Aloe Top

Botanic Farm Natural Energy Mask Sheet Aloe – Retail Value $2

Aloe is moisturizing and it is the featured ingredient. It is also soothing if you are irritated or have had too much sun exposure (no substitute for SPF, though). This also has some antioxidants from grapefruit extract and tea leaf extract. It is paraben-free, if that is of concern to you (I don’t avoid parabens) although it does have honeysuckle extract which has some paraben-like compounds. This one also has sodium hyaluronate, which is a long carbohydrate polymer that holds on to water molecules near the surface of the skin so it is moisturizing and may help minimize the appearance of fine lines.

Confession time. This box was aloe/aloe/aloe/aloe/cactus/cactus/tea tree/tea tree/cica and all the masks were white sheets with green on the packaging and I honestly had a hard time telling most of them apart (some exceptions below). Fragrance was low on pretty much all of them. But if I sound repetitive it’s because the masking experiences were similar each day.

Mask Maven Subscription Box August 2019 - Natural Energy Mask Sheet Tea Tree Top

Botanic Farm Natural Energy Mask Sheet Tea Tree – Retail Value $2

You can take pretty much everything I said about the previous mask as true here, too, except that you should substitute tea tree for the aloe in that one. I like tea tree oil in skincare because it helps fight breakouts but I find it to be pretty gentle and non-irritating. This one did not have a strong tea tree oil scent (tea tree oil has a distinctive scent that some people don’t like, although it doesn’t bother me) and was also moisturizing despite the lack of aloe.

Mask Maven Subscription Box August 2019 - My Beauty Diary Aloe Mask Top

My Beauty Diary Aloe Mask – Retail Value $1.99

My Beauty Diary masks are exceptionally heavy on the serum, from past experience, and that was true here, as well, although this did not drip all over my shirt, which I suppose is an improvement. (I don’t wear nice clothes when using masks because I never know what to expect.) This has aloe and sodium hyaluronate, which we’ve already talked about, as well as some antioxidants from various fruits (kiwi, grapefruit), proteins, and moisturizing fatty compounds (i.e., hydrolyzed jojoba esters, glycosphingolipids, etc.). The item description mentions rosehips but I don’t see evidence of that anywhere in the ingredients list.

Mask Maven Subscription Box August 2019 - My Beauty Diary Mexico Cactus Mask Top

My Beauty Diary Mexico Cactus Mask – Retail Value $1.99

This one differs from the My Beauty Diary aloe mask a little more than the Botanic Farm masks differ in terms of ingredients, although a lot of the same ingredients are there (aloe, glycosphingolipids, sodium hyaluronate, etc.). Cactus is also going to be moisturizing, which makes sense if you think about it. In order to survive in a low-water environment, cactus has to hold on to water to avoid desiccation, and one way to do that is to produce carbohydrates and/or proteins that bind with water. So it’s a similar mechanism to how sodium hyaluronate, collagen, and other compounds like this work. Anyway, this one was also not too drippy.

Mask Maven Subscription Box August 2019 - Yadah Daily Green Mask Cica Top

Yadah Daily Green Mask Cica – Retail Value $1.99

This was the only cica mask. Cica is short for Centella asiatica and is also sometimes known as gotu kola. This ingredient is supposed to facilitate healing of burns, cuts, and other wounds. Cica has amino acids, beta carotene (a form of vitamin A, an antioxidant), and fatty acids. This one also has grapefruit extract as well as sodium hyaluronate. This was maybe a little lower on the serum/goopiness compared to some of the other masks this month, but it wasn’t by a lot. I didn’t have any wounds on my skin to be able to assess effectiveness. I do think this would be gentle enough for daily use although maybe buy a box and save it for when your skin really needs healing.

Mask Maven Subscription Box August 2019 - Yadah Daily Green Mask Cactus Top

Yadah Daily Green Mask Cactus – Retail Value $3

This one is vegan (so chances are, the one above is as well). That is not, in general, an assumption you should make about K-beauty ingredients, as most sodium hyaluronate used in industry is a byproduct of poultry and/or fish processing. However, there are ways to get sodium hyaluronate and similar compounds from vegan sources. Anyway, we’ve talked about cactus and its properties, and this one is supposed to be good for sensitive skin. It did not cause any irritation for me, at any rate. I should also note, although this was heavy on the serum, it dried on my face after removing the mask very quickly.

Mask Maven Subscription Box August 2019 - Village 11 Daily Fresh Up Mask Tea Tree Top

Village 11 Daily Fresh Up Mask Tea Tree – Retail Value $2.50

I think this brand is new for me. Although it didn’t list cica in the name, it does include cica as well as tea tree oil. This one is supposed to be anti-inflammatory. I’m not sure I would notice that after one use, but over time, I think you would start to see an effect. (Sorry this one is kind of short but the Beauteque site doesn’t have an ingredients list for this mask…)

Mask Maven Subscription Box August 2019 - Nature Republic Real Nature Mask Sheet Aloe Top

Nature Republic Real Nature Mask Sheet Aloe – Retail Value $1.90

The manufacturer’s website doesn’t have a lot of information about this one. It obviously has aloe, which we’ve talked about already. I do wish K-beauty companies would consistently provide full and correct ingredients lists on their websites but, alas, that is not currently the case, although some do better than others. This one was moisturizing and soothing. This is a brand that shows up often in Mask Maven.

Mask Maven Subscription Box August 2019 - May Island Real Essence Mask Pack Aloe Top

May Island Real Essence Mask Pack Aloe – Retail Value $1.49

This one was heavy on the serum and the serum didn’t dry well on my skin, which made my primer and foundation act weird, so I would not suggest using this in the morning before work (as I did). This one would be good in the evening, though, especially if you spent the day in the sun. This has witch hazel (good for toning), matricaria (which is also soothing), allantoin (which is supposed to make rough skin smoother), and sodium hyaluronate, which we’ve talked about up above.

Verdict: I calculated a value of $18.86 for the August 2019 Beauteque Mask Maven. That is right about the cost of the box plus shipping to within 10 cents or so. I didn’t think there was a ton of variety this month but I think the benefit is, if you want to try different aloe or tea tree or cactus masks and see which one you like best from a fit/serum level/etc. perspective, this month enabled you to do that.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? No, this was the August package. You have to sign up by the 15th to get a box for the month, so your first box would probably be October’s box and arrive in early November.
