GlossyBox is a monthly beauty subscription box. They have the best packaging in the business, their products are usually a deluxe size or full-size, and the value is usually good too.

This box was sent to us at no cost for review. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes.)

FYI: GlossyBox sends out multiple variations of the box during some months. So, there may be some variation between what I review and what you receive.

GlossyBox September 2019 Review

Each box comes with a fold-out card detailing the items included.

Also included were two promo cards for Naked Wines. Curious about this wine club? I have all the deets for you!

Looks like a Hello Fresh gift card also arrived inside.

Avant Prestige Pro-Perfecting Collagen Primer Touche Eclat, 30 ml - Full Size! Retail Value $103.00 (£85)

I have gotten a moisturizer from this brand before and I am always wide-eyed by the retail values! The demure little tubes are very low-key for how luxurious the contents are. I actually really like this stuff. It is sort of a runny gel texture, meaning a little goes a long way! It does have a scent but it smells like it is more from the ingredients than a fragrance choice. I personally didn't mind it. My face felt really smooth and perfectly primed for makeup after using it, and I always love and appreciate a collagen boost!

Grow Gorgeous Rescue and Repair Shampoo and Conditioner Set, 50 ml each - Retail Value $20.00

I know some people don't love shampoo and conditioner samples, but I tend to hoard them for travel after I sample them, so a duo in a larger size tube or bottle is always a plus in my book. I like this formula a lot! The shampoo does a great job of cleansing my roots, though it doesn't quite meet that squeaky root standard which would make me over-the-moon happy. This is technically a "rescue & repair" sort of formula, so this is not unexpected. The conditioner was more of a standout because my ends look SO shiny and the smell clung to my hair all day. Winning!

Contour Cosmetics Matte Liquid Lipstick in 'Juju', 2.5 ml - Full Size! Listed Value $29.00

While I couldn't find this lipstick sold solo, I did find a kit that it was included in here. The pink color of this lipstick is gorgeous. It feels like my natural lip color, but so much better and with a dash of drama. It is a matte formula and that is where I have a small qualm, because it did feel really drying and I had a few minor patch issues. I found that applying my favorite gloss on top saved this formula for me. It is an extra step, and it does defeat the overall purpose of a matte formula, but I prefer satin or gloss anyways.

This is my kind of pink!

Eyeko London Fat Liquid Eyeliner in 'Black', 3.5 g - Full Size! Retail Value $18.00

I am more than a little over black eyeliners, but at least this one is cute and chubby. The thicker marker tip is perfect for super dramatic liner looks and the pigment is a true, rich black. It also dried really quickly, something that is a must for the way I apply liner.

The tip allows for a really thick line.

Tocca Montauk Mini Candle, 1.2 oz - Estimated Value $5.04 (Buy a full-size 10 oz for $42.00)

This is a mystery surprise item! There is likely some variation between boxes.

I absolutely love Tocca. My favorite of their scents is Cleopatra, which was a gift one birthday from an old boyfriend. Though that relationship is long gone, I still love the scent because it reminds me of college and Massachusetts falls and subletting an apartment with strangers who became lifelong friends. Scent is amazing! This is a blend of salt and cucumber which is decidedly coastal, but not in a beachy way. Think lighthouses more than palm trees. I think this was (for me) a wonderful surprise item.

Verdict: GlossyBox has a value of around $175.04, which is great for a $21 box. I did have to just calculate all of that with the listed value of the lipstick, as sold solo, as I couldn't locate it for sale. A lot of that value is, admittedly, tied up in the Avant primer. If you dislike it, you might be feeling a little less love for this selection. I liked most of the items this month, and the sizes were good, so I can comfortably give this box a thumbs up. Bonus points for a mystery item that I actually loved!

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? Yes! If you sign up in the month of September, this should be your first box!

Value Breakdown: At $21.00 for this box, here’s what you are paying approximately per item:

  • Avant Primer $12.36
  • Grow Gorgeous Set $2.40
  • Contour Cosmetics Lipstick $3.48
  • Eyeko Liner $2.16
  • Tocca Candle $0.60

Alternatively, each item in this box has an average cost of $4.20 (considering the shampoo and conditioner as a single item set).

I love natural/vegan beauty products, Korean skincare, unique jewelry, and weird candies from far away places. When I am not waiting for my next exciting box you can find me painting or taking photographs of interesting people. I never leave home without pug hair somewhere on my shirt and a bold lipstick on my smile.

I’m guessing my variation is 7. It said US-7 if that’s a variation number. Anyway I got a hey honey trick and treat cream concealer 0.27 ounces for my mystery item in natural tone. The rest of the box was the same as above.

The RV on the primer is laughable. I got 3 of them free from Boxycharm. It was a shipping error to send 3 but they said keep them. No way is this primer worth 100.00+.

Squeaky clean actually means you’ve stripped your hair of its natural and necessary oils.

I liked this month’s box much better than their birthday box last month! I’ll definitely use every item this month! And although I’d already received the Tocca candle in something else from Glossy…was it in the Christmas box???…I’m still happy because it smells great and candles are always a win! Anyone get any of the other supposedly 6 mystery items? It said the candle was one of 7 that you could receive. Just curious!

Mine was a hey honey cream concealer in natural tone .27oz.

My mystery item was the RT 200 Expert Foundation Brush.

Completely underwhelmed with this box and this is about the third or fourth underwhelming Glossy box.

Thankfully I only paid about $14 for it with an annual subscription.

Does anyone else think the shampoo and conditioner’s scent is waaay overpowering? I washed my hair this morning, and though it is completely dry, it is making me completely miserable with the scent as I’m sitting at my desk at work! It doesn’t smell “bad” it is just bug-fogger strong! Actually going to toss it out cause I can’t handle it. Bleh.

I find both the shampoo and conditioner to have an overwhelming petrol chemical smell. I mixed a bit of another brand of conditioner with the conditioner to try to make my hair smell better, but the awful scent overpowered it. I thought the shampoo felt too stripping on my ends, but the conditioner–scent aside–performed well and made my hair soft and shiny.

Definitely! I washed my hair in the afternoon and couldn’t sleep for 2 hours because the smell was practically choking me. My husband said it made the entire house smell like the industrial cleaner “Fabulosa” from the dollar store. So gross! I had to rewash my hair so I could sleep. Going in the garbage for sure.

I feel the same way about the OI line of Davines products. I know I’m in the minority as most people love the scent but to me it’s a combination of bug spray and rotting cloves. And it stays all day.

Ugh. Waited too long and now the September box is sold out. Total FOMO.

I think that must’ve been a glitch in the system! I was just able to order mine!

Luna

Out of curiosity, where did you see that the September box is sold out? Just asking because I can’t recall any of their monthly boxes ever selling out, and I just checked their site and I didn’t see any mention of it.

If you love Glossybox, they often have great coupons, like 25% of annual subs. I got mine for $13.50 a box, which is awesome. I find myself using more items from Glossybox than any other sub, and trust me, I have them all! The variety is great.

This is the best looking monthly box I think I’ve ever seen of theirs in the three years I’ve been following beauty boxes here. Maybe Glossy is on the upswing?

I love this month’s box. My favorite item is the primer, for sure. Closely following is the shampoo / condition set. I gifted the eyeliner and lip gloss… and I’m okay with that as the person who received them was super happy. The candle smells beautifully. Remember… if you wait for Black Friday or Cyber Monday, you’ll receive a healthy discount towards multiple months membership, which brings the box price down. 🙂
