Crate of Good Fall 2019 Review

I love that we start making an impact right away! This sticker informs us that to offset the cardboard used for this box, one tree has been planted.

I also love that they include this signed note at the top of each box which is such a great personal touch!

Each quarter they choose four different causes to support that fall under the four categories they thought were globally felt: Animals, Children, Environment, and Poverty. I love how transparent they are about who they are helping and how! Each item is accompanied by a card that tells you about the product you received and how this product is making an impact. This quarter it looks like they turned our cards into a little guide book for us. You can view the individual cause cards throughout the review pictured with their items.

Sand Cloud Reusable Metal Straws (2) and Pouch - Retail Value $14.00 (Straws -$4.00 each + $6.00 pouch)

Animal Cause: SEE Turtles

Impact: Save baby sea turtles by protecting beaches around the world and keeping plastics out of our oceans!

Our animal impact item this quarter comes from Sand Cloud which is a company whose mission is to help save marine life and 10% of their profits go towards this purpose. They have a focus on eco-friendly, sustainable products and these two straw sets are perfect products to represent this mission! These two reusable stainless steel straws, which come in their own burlap pouches along with cleaning brushes, will help keep plastic out of our oceans. We have shifted to reusable straws in our home and with three young children who I am hesitant to give open cups to in public (my oldest is 4!), we have found that keeping a set of reusable straws in our diaper bag has been incredibly helpful as many restaurants and businesses are phasing them out. While I have a silicone set for the kids, these nicer stainless steel ones will be perfect for my husband and me!

Mint Baja Pouch

In addition to our straws, we also received this great pouch which is actually big enough to fit one of their signature towels in (read their story here). This pouch is a zero-waste product since it is made from the cut scraps of the towels they make. How cool is that? As for the pouch, it is actually really nice for a $6.00 pouch! Granted, it's a bit small, but it seems to be great quality and I love the colors and pattern! This would be great for storing other reusable items like utensils in for on the go! It's also sand-resistant like their towels, so it would also make a perfect bag for the beach to hold your essentials in to keep them from getting sandy.

Bixbee Panda Lunchbox - Retail Value $17.99

Poverty Cause: One Here, One There

Impact: For every purchase made, Bixbee provides a backpack of school supplies to a child in need!

Our lunchbox comes from Bixbee, a company with the desire to help improve the educational opportunities of children around the world. The founder began by designing bags for kids and now they make a difference all over the world through their One Here, One There program. They work with non-profit organizations to support areas with a high level of need by donating a schoolbag full of supplies to children for every backpack purchased. They also sell lunchboxes such as the one we received.

The quality of this soft lunchbox is great with an environmentally-friendly liner that is food safe and free from BPA, phthalates, PVC, and lead. It features a pocket on the back with a little window for an identification card along with a strap at the top that snaps closed so you can attach it to a backpack. In addition to being great functionally, it is so cute and has ears that aren't completely attached so they stick out adding to the cuteness! I have kids so I know this will get used, but I wonder if this will appeal to adults as well? I am sure it's not something everyone would feel comfortable carrying around, but I am hoping that those purchasing this box will feel like I do and appreciate the item just as much for the cause it supports!

Ettitude Bamboo Charcoal Pillowcase Set in Grid - Retail Value $48 (currently on sale for $29)

Environment Cause: One Tree Planted

Impact: Trees will be planted through a partnership with One Tree Planted.

Our environment item this quarter is this set of pillowcases from Ettitude and I was stoked to see them in the box! I purchased a set through a sale one time because I read they were better for your hair and I love them! The grid pattern with the shiny gray fabric is really nice looking and neutral enough that I think it would go with most bedding sets. These particular pillowcases are pretty uniquely made, "by blending Bamboo Charcoal powder into Bamboo Lyocell Fabric, this silky smooth fabric fights unwanted odor, controls bacteria, and stays fresh for longer." It absorbs odor and wicks moisture, and it even takes less water to make these pillowcases which goes right along with their mission of sustainability. In keeping with Ettitude's mission of protecting the environment, Crate of Good has partnered with One Tree Planted to plant more trees. Even better, if you choose Environment as your cause, they will plant an additional four trees for you!

The Kind Coalition/No Bully Mug

Children Cause: No Bully

Impact: Students will be provided with sessions of bullying prevention programming.

This mug comes from The Kind Coalition which donates 50% of their profits to organizations working to overcome bullying. They believe in kindness, plain and simple and this mug is such a great reminder of that with the No Bully logo on the other side. No Bully "began as a collaborative team of educators, psychologists, and lawyers committed to building a kinder and more compassionate world as a means of ending the crisis of bullying in schools and online." This mug is large, holding about 14 ounces, and I love the simple black and white color scheme. As a former school teacher, I can't help but think what a nice mug this would make for a teacher's desk! I certainly would have used it in my classroom and I really love the mission of both of these organizations.

Exclusive CoG/Sprout Pencils (3) (Buy a pack of 5 here for $12.95)

Each quarter you also receive a Crate of Good exclusive item and this time we received something pretty unique! These pencils are engraved with the Crate of Good logo and look like ordinary pencils except for the ends which have little green capsules on them. The idea is that when you are finished with your pencil, you can recycle it by planting it and watching your herbs or flowers grow. Our three pencils all contain basil and I love this concept! How great to take something so simple and ordinary and turn it into a unique and sustainable product, which is fitting of the Sprout mission.

Verdict: This quarter's Crate of Good was packed full of goodies! I am always so curious to see what they come up with each quarter and so far they have not disappointed. I don't even know if I can pick a favorite item from this box because I know I will really use everything, although those pillowcases are probably pretty high on the list! I also really love the Sand Cloud pouch and my son loves his new adorable lunchbox. This was a great mix of items that again felt pretty universal and had a nice range. While I love all of the products, I think what I love most is reading about the causes and organizations that they feature. At $59.99/quarter (plus free shipping) that gives each item (counting the Sand Cloud items as one) an average value of about $12, which seems fair to me! This subscription is so unique and there is also a lot of value in the fact that the purchase of this box supports so many great causes.

I am a homeschooling mom to 4 kids; 1 girl and 3 boys. While I have been reviewing boxes since 2018 and I love the luxury of trying new products, I'm also balancing it out by dabbling in a little bit of homesteading, too. We now have 4 chickens and a rabbit and my sourdough starter is going strong! I love learning about new brands and sharing the great things I find with others in hopes that they find something new to love or to fit their needs!

Is this box sponsored by Sand Cloud or is it a Sand Cloud box?

Also I don’t want be a “troll”- just a lovely mermaid but a gentle reminder; they are sea turtles, not see turtles.

Click the link. SEE Turtles is the name of the organization.

I really loved the first box but I think I’m going to donate directly to the causes this quarter instead of accruing more stuff.
