California Found August 2019 Review

Instead of a booklet or pamphlet, California Found sends individual info cards featuring each item and giving some deets about the people and brands behind the products. They donate 10% of their profit every month to a charitable cause, and this month (as with last month) they are donating to Surfrider Foundation.

Lulu LilyBird Sterling Circle Necklace - Retail Value $48.00

I am always really happy when I get a sterling silver piece of jewelry in a box. My skin tends to erode platings off of base metals, even if they are gold plated, making their lifespan limited in my jewelry box. Sterling is one of those metals that only gets prettier over time and is unaffected by my skin chemistry.

I really think the design of this necklace is lovely. The spoilers mentioned a rose quartz stone, but mine seems to be the darker iolite stone mentioned by Beth in the spoiler post comments. This suits me just fine, as the smokier stone gives this necklace a little more of an edge, something I lean into for fall accessories. I have found that 18-inch chains are my ideal length, and this one fell perfectly around my neck to peek out of blouses. I am really pleased with this piece!

Delicate and edgy all at once!

No. 28 Hydrating Hand and Body Cream, 4 oz. - Retail Value $22.o0

When I first tried this hand cream, I thought it looked super heavy. I was really surprised at how light it felt while still being super hydrating. The first ingredient is aloe vera, which is genius. It has a fragrance blend of various citrus, lavender, petitgrain, and more that is sweet but subtle. I really like the amber glass and apothecary-inspired label. This cream hasn't left my desk since I opened it because it is perfect for all-day hydration as I write!

The Hundredth Acre Night-Blooming Jasmine Candle, 10 oz - Retail Value $25.00

Oh wow. This candle is incredible. I absolutely LOVE jasmine scents and this is a heady authentic blend that is both botanical and incredibly sexy. It reminds me so much of LUSH Lust perfume, an old favorite that I wear often, especially if I am feeling myself! This candle releases a ton of fragrance, which suits me just fine, and burns cleanly and evenly, meaning no tunneling or leftover wax. With a burn time of 50-55 hours, I get to look forward to this scent for a long time.

Gustus Vitae Gourmet Ultimate BBQ Seasoning, 2.2 oz - Retail Value $9.99

Gustus Vitae Turkey Burger Seasoning, 2 oz - Retail Value $12.00

Gustus Vitae Veggie Burger Seasoning, 1.5 oz - Retail Value $12.00

These salts tend to appear pretty regularly in subscription boxes, so I know some people out there might be less than enthused about them. I already have a few sets but I am happy to get new flavors, especially since my husband absolutely loves them. He adds these spices to pizza, veggies, popcorn, you name it. I know he will be extra excited about this BBQ-inspired trio, especially since he likes to make his own burger patties. We do a ton of grilling in the early fall too, so these came at the perfect time.

The Verdict: This was my first California Found box and I am impressed. The quality of the items was stellar, and the curation was really great too. I enjoyed each of the items this month, especially the necklace and candle. (I need a few more of these candles!!) The hand cream was also pretty wonderful, and the spices will make my husband's day when I present them to him. The value was good too. I calculated around a $128.99 value for this $49 box. All in all, I am really thrilled with this box and I look forward to next month!

I love natural/vegan beauty products, Korean skincare, unique jewelry, and weird candies from far away places. When I am not waiting for my next exciting box you can find me painting or taking photographs of interesting people. I never leave home without pug hair somewhere on my shirt and a bold lipstick on my smile.

I absolutely love this box! I really do look forward to getting it every month. I feel like *this* is exactly why I became addicted to sub boxes! I am not necessarily looking to get a ton of stuff back that’s worth two or three times the cost of the box but getting thing I really like and didn’t know I needed! Its The fun-ness of getting a surprise every month that’s *not* skincare or makeup! I have looked back on past boxes and I wish I had signed up much earlier!

Within these comments it would appear I am in the minority. $49.95+$7.95(S&H) =$57.90. This box had a value of $128.99 and many subscription boxes, most of the time or sometimes have values that exceed the advertised value, as in this months case, here is why California Found is a no go for me.

-The items, while nice, are nothing special. It’s not like California is some exotic, special destination, offering hard to find items. Especially, a candle, hand cream, these varieties of spices, and a pretty necklace.

-If the advertised value of the box is $90, and even if a months box is valued at $100, the “gift” of $30-$40, of random items is just not worth it to me.

There is a plethora of subscription boxes with long standing great reviews and value.
I find this box too expensive and nothing special.

Hi Sarah!
Thanks for your feedback. As you point out there are tons of sub box options out there and not every box is for everybody. If you have ideas on handcrafted, small batch California-made products you would like to see in future California Found collections, we would love your thoughts. If we are just not for you, no hard feelings! 🧡

Love CAFound! Great curation of products. Love the jewelry!

Thanks Val! September is amazing as well. Two sustainable home products, more jewelry, two bags of yummy treats and a little non-toxic fingertip glam perfect for fall. I can’t wait to share it with you!

It’s iolite (with an “i”), not Lolite. Bad font choice or something could easily confuse the issue. But iolite is a dark purplish stone so it looks right for that.

beth

Correct! Thanks for the clarification. You’re 100% right that the font choice goofed that up. I read today it “…provides honesty and is particularly good for the spiritual journey.”

Eep! Thanks for the catch. Brain fart!

That’s a lovely box, however, it’s too expensive for me, especially considering that I don’t wear costume jewelry. The same story is with Bombay and Cedar – sometimes their boxes are a total miss for me, and that is the reason I don’t subscribe to them – I can’t afford to throw away $55.

Natalie

Why do you consider a sterling silver necklace “costume” jewelry?

Reply ButtonReply

jenny

I can’t speak for the original poster, but my mother uses the phrase “costume jewelry” to cover all jewelry that isn’t made of precious stones and solid gold or platinum. It makes me go 🙄 every time she says in reference to something I’m wearing, but I don’t think she means it to cause offense.

Emilia

Because it looks cheap.

Penny

I really enjoyed my box this month. I received the rose quartz version of the necklace and it is just gorgeous. I subscribe to this box for the unique jewelry and it never disappoints. The value of the sub is usually there just for the jewelry alone, in my opinion. They are pieces I won’t find in any other sub box. The other items were nice as well.

Totally agree about the jewelry. I am always SO excited when I see sterling.

beth

Thanks Penny! More unique and beautiful jewelry coming in the September collection. So excited!

What a great box!! And correct me if I’m wrong, but aren’t those spices a gluten-free brand? Just wanted to mention it because that might be the tipping point for someone. 🙂 Maybe I’m in the minority, but a very large percentage of my friends and family are eating a gluten-free diet. Plus they are non gmo which is awesome in itself! Thanks for a wonderful review and most especially for mentioning the length of the necklace! I find that at least 90% of the MSA reviews don’t mention the length of the necklace and that drives me bonkers! 🤷🏼‍♀️ The length/size of an item is definitely always a deciding factor for me. 👍

beth

Yep! From their website, all three of these selections have…

No nuts, soy, dairy, or gluten.

🙂

tpop

I completely agree about necklace length! And most people don’t list it on swaps, either.

This box never ever disappoints. Yay!
