I'm reviewing The Whisper Man:

The Whisper Man by Alex North - Retail Value $26.99 (found here for $12.96)

Book Summary from Amazon:

In this dark, suspenseful thriller, Alex North weaves a multi-generational tale of a father and son caught in the crosshairs of an investigation to catch a serial killer preying on a small town.

After the sudden death of his wife, Tom Kennedy believes a fresh start will help him and his young son Jake heal. A new beginning, a new house, a new town. Featherbank.

But the town has a dark past. Twenty years ago, a serial killer abducted and murdered five residents. Until Frank Carter was finally caught, he was nicknamed "The Whisper Man," for he would lure his victims out by whispering at their windows at night.

Just as Tom and Jake settle into their new home, a young boy vanishes. His disappearance bears an unnerving resemblance to Frank Carter's crimes, reigniting old rumors that he preyed with an accomplice. Now, detectives Amanda Beck and Pete Willis must find the boy before it is too late, even if that means Pete has to revisit his great foe in prison: The Whisper Man.

And then Jake begins acting strangely. He hears a whispering at his window...

This book was super easy to jump into! Each chapter is from the point of view of different characters and even though none are introduced by name at the beginning of each, you easily start to know who is who and recognize their thoughts and voices. The writing style of Mr. North is effortless and conversational. His sentences are often short or clipped, like a thought process moving naturally from the brain to paper. It is undeniably approachable and very easy to enjoy.

This is the sort of book I could have never read if my husband still worked night shifts. It is downright terrifying at times! Aside from the whole "mysterious child-killer on the loose" thing, this book also deals with a father and son who are reeling from the sudden and unexpected loss of wife and mother, Rebecca. Tom is just a dad trying to do his best while living on the edge of obvious depression and Jake is just a kid who is growing increasingly more attached to his imaginary friend than the actual students at his school. Deciding they both need a change and a fresh start, Tom allows Jake to select their new home in a new town from an image on the internet, and this is where things start to get more than crazy. Their new home isn't a safe haven at all, because a neighborhood boy has gone missing after hearing whispers at night.

Along with Jake and Tom, we are also immediately intertwined with Detective Pete Willis who tracked down the original Whisper Man, a child murderer who would whisper to children through their bedroom windows at night before they disappeared. Though that killer, Frank Carter, is behind bars, this new disappearance is drawing parallels to his crimes that set everyone on edge. Their stories run parallel throughout the book, dipping, and twining into a complete picture and thrilling story.

I haven't quite finished this one yet, but it is gripping. I generally don't gravitate towards crime thrillers, but this one is so easy to read that anyone would be hard-pressed to not finish it if they start.

Verdict: The book I picked for the August Book of the Month was out of my normal sort of genre for sure but I am really enjoying this book and I think that might be one of the beauties of a book club: you choose new and exciting things from a curated selection! Though I totally can't read this one when I am home alone (or before bed) it is engrossing and thrilling, and I can't wait to read the end.

I love natural/vegan beauty products, Korean skincare, unique jewelry, and weird candies from far away places. When I am not waiting for my next exciting box you can find me painting or taking photographs of interesting people. I never leave home without pug hair somewhere on my shirt and a bold lipstick on my smile.

I read this book also. I did really enjoy it. I’d say that although there wasn’t a HUGE twist at the end, all of the parts came together and made sense. Part of the ending was sweet and part makes you cringe. It wraps up nicely, though. I honestly enjoyed the twists coming throughout the book instead of all right at the end.
