Birchbox September 2019 "Nighttime Self-Care" Curated Box #4 Review

There are two accompanying sheets in this month's Birchbox. The front of one explains that CAD (Customer Appreciation Day) is coming up, while the back lists out the six items included. The second sheet is a coupon code to get a free travel-size Sunday Riley product with any $35 purchase.

This month also came with a cute pouch, which was a little surprise.

We also received a sheet of Birchbox stickers. Lots of swag this month!

My Clarins RE-MOVE Purifying Cleansing Gel, 0.1 fl oz - Estimated Retail Value $0.48 (Buy a full-size 4.2 oz for $20.00)

This is a really tiny sample size. Essentially, there might be enough in here for trying it twice, maybe three times. The pros are that it smells absolutely divine, and I love the thick gel texture because it sticks to my face throughout my scrubbing. It also has a fun foaming effect and left my skin feeling great. As far as cleansers go, this is one I would absolutely consider buying a full size of, especially at the affordable price point of $20.

MAC Cosmetics Cleanse Off Oil, 0.2 fl oz - Estimated Value $1.28 (Buy a full-size 5 oz for $32.00)

I like this oil a lot. But, to be fair, I really love oils! This is meant as more of a cleansing type of deal and it works great when used in that capacity. Stubborn and waterproof makeup formulas really have no chance! What I love about this oil is its versatility. You can also use it on dry patches of skin as a moisturizer or if you have some crazy hair frizz going on, try a few drops between your palms rubbed over your strands. It also smells great and though, again, we have a tiny sample, a little bit of oil goes a long way.

Daily Concepts Mother of Pearl Soap Sponge, 1.6 oz - Full Size! Retail Value $8.00

I used the charcoal version of this product before and liked it well enough, so I was curious about this pearl powder formula. It smells creamy and nice, and the texture is exfoliating, yet gentle. My only real complaint is that this thing is so small, even as a full size. It is meant to be a body sponge but the 2.5-inch size feels more like a facial sponge size.

Wilma Schumann Skin Care Hydrating Collagen Eye Pads, 1 pair - Estimated Value $3.60 (Buy 5 pairs for $18.00)

I am never one to complain about eye gels. I love them! I feel like you can use them anywhere: at your desk, before bed, in the car (guilty). These are old favorites and I love the cooling effect of the white-colored gels. They always leave my eyes de-puffed and brighter.

thisworks Deep Sleep Pillow Spray, 0.17 fl oz. - Estimated Retail Value $1.97 (Buy a full-size 2.5 fl oz. for $29.00)

Though I am not gaga over this product, it does make a ton of sense in a sleep-themed box. This little spray smells like lavender, and the scent is meant to help you drift off to dreamland. I generally always have lavender oil diffusing in my house but this would be a nice travel option.

amika Soulfood Nourishing Mask, 0.68 fl oz - Estimated Value $4.08 (Buy a full-size 2 oz for $12.00)

Finally, our last item is from my husband's favorite hair care line. For some reason, he just loves amika. I think it is because his barber complimented his hair's condition a few times after he started stealing my conditioner in the shower. I also enjoy it, but he, like, LOVES it. Like, a "put a ring on it" sort of adoration. I tried this out as a mask and it left my hair feeling great and looking shiny. He used it as more of a quick conditioner and wants me to buy some. That is winning in my book!

Verdict: This curated Birchbox box had a solid assortment of products, but really lacked in value. I calculated around $19.41 for everything, and though these are just estimated based on full-size values compared to sample sizes, I really expect more from this subscription. No matter how good the products are inside, I want to feel like I walked away with a good value, and that just wasn't here this time. Sure, there was a cool pouch and some sticker swag, but I would have traded them both for more actual product. Maybe next month!

I love natural/vegan beauty products, Korean skincare, unique jewelry, and weird candies from far away places. When I am not waiting for my next exciting box you can find me painting or taking photographs of interesting people. I never leave home without pug hair somewhere on my shirt and a bold lipstick on my smile.

I love this website and everything about it! I look forward to coming here and seeing what are in the boxes I don’t get and if others got the boxes I did and what they thought about it. Just curious, though. How do you figure out the estimated sample price from the original price? Thanks!

Megan, definitely check out your local Marshall’s for Amika products. Last weekend, my Marshalls was stacked to the brim with all sorts of Amika products… like one full shelf filled completely back to front with different products. 🙂

Thanks for the tip Luna! I haven’t been to a Marshalls or TJs in weeks because we got a new dog and a new couch and I am trying to behave. But WIll’s b-day is the first week in October so maybe that is an excuse. Is it weir to give your husband loads of fancy Amika for his birthday?

Well since we know from all the reviews how much he loves Amika, I think he would be thrilled to get a boatload of it. 😊

Dea

It’s OK as long as you’re OK with him giving you stuff for himself on your next birthday.

I paid for a year in advance this February, when it was still $10 per month. Plus I believe back then when you did the 12 month sub you got a month free so I think I pay a little over $9.00 per month. Once it has been 12 months I am DONE with BB for sure. Way overpriced and easy to kiss goodbye!

I got box number 2 the smash box lip pie is literally so small about the length of my pinkie and that’s including the cap which is half of it. Compared to the same sample size from Ipsy, it’s half the size. Really just adding insult to injury, I can’t wait until my year is over in 3 months. On the other hand Ipsy has been killing it in with all their bags, none of them are lacking. Birchbox has some major competition.

Price* dang autocorrect lol

You know it’s Birchbox when you see Wilma Schumann eye gels. They must have a full warehouse stacked to the top with those things. And another warehouse stuffed with Arrow lip balm lol. I want to like Birchbox, but the repetition of items is off the chart.

Megan – I generally don’t have the patience to let hair masks sit for their suggested time so your husband’s idea of using the Amika mask as a quick hair conditioner is a great idea.

I do this a lot when I am trying to make a smaller “mask” sample last longer. Will has very short hair so this tube should last him forever!
