Birchbox September 2019 "Ingredient-Conscious Beauty" Curated Box #3 Review

Birchbox ships in a fun outer box to preserve the nice gift box inside and this month includes a makeup pouch. The box advertises Customer Appreciation Day which is September 18th.

There are two info cards in this month's Birchbox. One advertises a free gift of Sunday Riley's Good Genes when subscribers spend $35+ in the shop. The other card once again mentions Customer Appreciation Day, explaining that September marks Birchbox's 9th Anniversary. On the flip side of that card, you'll find the details of the included items.

This month comes with a super fun makeup pouch made of what looks like waxed nylon. On one side, it's mint with "All The Things" written in hot pink and the other side is a deep teal color. It's topped with a hot pink zipper and this baby holds the contents of the box with room to spare. I can only assume this is a little bonus for their anniversary month, but they don't make mention of it on the info card.

There is also a bonus sticker sheet with cute illustrated things like mascara, lipstick, and cacti! Who doesn't love cute stickers??

HUM Nutrition Daily Cleanse, 6 ct - Estimated Value $2.50 (Buy a bottle of 60 for $25)

Getting sample packs of supplements is kinda "meh" to me. I'm into vitamins and these are supposed to be great for cleansing your hair and body of toxins, but like, I won't see results after taking this amount. The pack contains six pills which is three days-worth since the suggested dose is 2 per day.

Naturally Serious Gentle Cream Cleanser, 0.26 oz. - Estimated Value $1.69 (Buy a full size 4 oz. for $26)

I love the design of this little tube of cleanser. This brand is new to Birchbox and I can't say I'm familiar with it either. It has a pearly white cream consistency and is super gentle on the skin. The scent smells exactly like Dove beauty bar (my Mom's soap of choice when I was growing up) which is not unpleasant at all. This did a great job but since I prefer foam cleansers, I'll probably just use this til it's gone and move on.

Snow Fox Herbal Youth Collagen Boosting Mask - Estimated Value $9.00 (Buy a pack of 5 for $45)

This is another "new to Birchbox" brand but I've received it in natural beauty subs in the past. Snow Fox sheet masks are on the nicer side of the mask spectrum and this one was on par. The mask itself is sort of off white and has PLENTY of serum on it (which I lightly squeezed a bit of off). After having this mask on my face, it felt super dewy and slightly sticky but I'm turning over a new leaf with that feeling and forcing myself to allow it to slowly soak in. After maybe 10 minutes or so it felt better and almost seemed to feel like a great primer for my makeup.

The Beauty Crop Lighting Crew Highlighting Cream, 0.34 oz. - Retail Value $12.00

I've been really into highlighters lately but liquid highlighters are something I have a tough time with. I usually go back and forth between a solid cream or powder to get the job done. This full-size tube is packed with metallic glitz. As you can tell by the swatch on my hand, it's quite bold but can be started off slow and built up. There's no shortage of shimmer in this cream, but it's just not for me so I'll be passing it on to a gal pal.

Dr. Lipp Original Nipple Balm for Lips, 0.1 oz. - Estimated Value $2.90 (Buy a full-size 0.5 oz for $14.50)

Oh, yes. I am INTO this gooey balm! The sample size is really quite small, but only a teeny bit is needed to coat my lips and make them feel ultra-hydrated. This only has one ingredient, which is lanolin (made from Australian free-roaming sheep’s wool), and it's perfect for a lip mask at night to keep that kisser plump 'n' soft. It has no artificial colors, fragrances, or flavors so it's completely natural and can be used for many other things like cuticles, eyelashes, facial dewiness, and soothing after breastfeeding. I'm pumped to try this out in other ways in the future.

Davines Momo Shampoo, 2.5 oz. - Estimated Value $8.58 (Buy a full-size 8.45 oz. for $29)

Davines Momo Conditioner, 0.40 oz. - Estimated Value $1.56 (Buy a full-size 8.45 oz. for $33)

I saw the Momo shampoo in Megan's LE Birchbox "Ready for Takeoff" review and thought the bottle was so chubby and cute! One of my best friends, Molly, was nicknamed "Momo" by her niece so I also get a kick out of the name as well. I've used this shampoo about four times now and have really liked the results. My hair is soft and balanced with minimal flyaways. Even though this says it's for dry or dehydrated hair, it's been working well for my thin hair that gets greasy quickly. The conditioner is a thick pale green cream that feels great and doesn't allow any tangles post-shower. I wish it had come in a larger size!

Verdict: This curated Birchbox as pretty fun but I'm not sure I found a product that I can't live without. The shampoo/conditioner and Dr. Lipp balm probably impressed me the most but the supplements weren't enough to make me want to buy a full supply and other items were nothing to write home about. This box has an estimated retail value of $38.23 which is pretty good for the $15 cost.

The Dr. Lipp product is totally not worth it. I received it in another beauty bag last month. Its only real value is in the branding, as lanolin is incredibly cheap and commonly used in hospitals for breastfeeding new mothers. You can order a huge tube of it on Amazon for next to nothing!

My box was different than those reviewed. I did get the same bag. The bag was cute, but not a must have. I actually cancelled after this month because I’m tired of receiving gold(ish) eye and lip wear. I got the lancome lip gloss and it was metallic gold.

I chose this box, and I’m very happy with it.

Love my box, got the one with the Living Proof, and it’s a really big sample. A little disappointed the actual box is not the cute one they were showing on the website. It’s just plain.

I got box number 2 the smash box lip pie is literally so small about the length of my pinkie and that’s including the cap which is half of it. Compared to the same sample size from Ipsy, it’s half the size. Really just adding insult to injury, I can’t wait until my year is over in 3 months. On the other hand Ipsy has been killing it in with all their bags, none of them are lacking. Birchbox has some major competition

The highlighting cream looks so different from its “smear” on the Beauty Crop’s website! I picked this box because it looked so pink and doable in their photo. In Marne’s photo (which is the true look, I’m sure), it looks so dark and shimmery. Bummer. I’ll try putting a touch into my morning sunscreen slather and see what happens. I typically cover the sunscreen with translucent powder. Maybe it will work that way. Any ideas/feedback, ladies? I’m pale and a complete makeup klutz.

Mixing it in with moisturizer or sunscreen sounds like a great idea, Dea! I’d start with a really small amount since this one is pretty bold!

Yay! I actually love the makeup bag and it will be perfect for inside my gym bag! Can’t wait to receive my box!

That bag is so cute! I love the colors.
As far as the supplements go, I wouldn’t bother…unless your liver and kidneys aren’t working properly (in which case you’d likely be in the hospital anyway), there is no need to cleanse or detox your body…

Melissa

Exactly. This whole detoxing thing is a myth. One that I fell for for a while.
