Vegancuts Snack Box July 2019 Review
Vegancuts has had a pretty solid year so far. Let’s see what they sent for July:

Fruit Bliss Mini Apricots, 1.76 oz – Buy 12 Pouches for $23.88
These are just dried apricots and they are a lot like other dried apricots. I liked them, but there are half a dozen similar brands at Whole Foods. These were nice and soft and they are organic, non-GMO, and unsulfured, if any of those are important to you.
Savory Wild Portabella Jerky Sweet Balsamic and Golden Fig, 2 oz – Retail Value $4.99
Look, I know mushrooms are good for you, with fiber and minerals. But there is no other vegan/vegetarian food in the world that activates my gag reflex so quickly or so thoroughly. Also, jerky is not really something I feel that is missing from my life. I had never actually eaten jerky before I stopped eating meat 26 years ago. (Minor technical point: these can’t be “plant-based” because mushrooms aren’t plants.) At any rate, with mushrooms, I just can’t.
Kay’s Pass the Peas Dill Pickle, 4 oz – Buy 6 Bags for $19.50 (found here for $9.75)
Kay’s is known for incorporating plant-based proteins into different foods (pretzels, cereal, etc.). I have generally enjoyed their other items. I think this was not my favorite flavor but we don’t use much dill in cooking so maybe I am just not used to it. These were a little tough/chewy rather than being crispy. I would be open to trying a different flavor of this product. For what it’s worth, this was a full-sized bag, which was nice to see.
Alo Dried Aloe Vera and Mango Fruit, 1 oz – Buy 12 Bags for $30
This was interesting, but definitely something I’m glad I got to try. I have never had dried aloe before and didn’t even realize it could be used as a food. The mango was a little tough but the aloe was really easy to chew and not sticky, although not strongly flavored either.
Clif Mojo Crunch Finger Pickin’ BBQ Snack Clusters, 1.06 oz – Retail Value $1.99
This is a fairly new product, I think, and this line in general is getting a big push in food boxes lately, as I received something else from them in Love with Food this month. My husband and I were not big fans of this. It has some nuts and grains and the clusters are somewhat lightweight. The seasoning didn’t really grab me, though, and there was something about the texture that made me keep thinking the next time I bit down, I would hit something hard and break a tooth. It’s hard to explain. These were somewhat starchy.
Nooma Organic Electrolyte Drink in Blueberry Peach, 16.9 fl oz – Buy 12 for $29.49
This has been showing up in a lot of food and fitness subscription boxes lately. If you are in need of a sports drink and you want something without some of the artificial colors of Gatorade, this could be an option. It doesn’t actually taste like coconut water (it’s better, and I strongly prefer this blueberry peach flavor to the chocolate mint, which I have also tried). I don’t typically need products like this as I just don’t lose that many fluids, even when I work out, but if you have an outdoor job or like to go jogging or similar activities, your needs may differ from mine!
Paleo Puffs Himalayan Salt and Apple Cider Vinegar, 1 oz – Buy 9, 5 oz Bags for $29.99
I do not typically care for salt and vinegar potato chips, but these are much milder and I don’t mind the flavor. I am also happy to get a different flavor of this snack, in general, as it seems I’ve had about 8 bags of the “no cheese cheesiness” and, until now, nothing else. These are pretty starchy.
Lundberg Family Farms Turmeric Rice, 8 oz
This does not appear to be available for purchase yet. I think it is a newer product, though, as it *is* on the Lundberg website. We’ve been getting about one pantry item per month from Vegan Cuts and it’s one of the strong points of this subscription lately, as I’ve learned about a lot of new brands and products and also some of these pantry items have saved me when things don’t go according to plan and I need a quick dinner. Lundberg rice is great anyway; it’s the brand I typically buy although their microwaveable line is new to me.
Fix Hot Sauce Sriracha, 2 packets – Buy and 18 oz bottle for $7.99
One thing Vegan Cuts has been great at lately is hot sauce. And this is another one that I like. (I’ve you’re looking for a good neutral dish on which to try hot sauce, some combination of lentils and brown rice with vegetables is pretty forgiving.) I do wish there had been a bit more as, despite the fact that the graphic design on the packets was nicely done, these are still as small as (if not smaller than) free taco sauce packets from Taco Bell. (A few months back we got a full-sized bottle of hot sauce so it’s not unreasonable to hope for a larger package in the future.)
Just Date Syrup (2 packets) – Buy an 8.8 oz bottle for $6.99
I have had this before, I think from Love with Food. This is sugar extracted from dates and it is supposed to be a low glycemic index sweetener that also has some minerals and antioxidants. I do think this has a nice flavor, and it could be a great option if you are looking for a vegan substitute for honey. I don’t usually sweeten any food or beverages but if that’s something you’re into, this is relatively inexpensive and definitely worth a look. (Also, this is not in the photo of all the items because it was hiding out at the bottom of the box in that little brown envelope, which I didn’t even notice for a few days!)
Verdict: This month’s Vegancuts Snack Box had 10 items for an average value per item of about $2.50 (counting sample packets together as one item). Although there were two different items arriving only in tiny sample packets (hot sauce and date syrup) there were a few larger items (mushroom jerky, rice, protein puff things) that probably balance out the value a bit. There were not so many repeats this month (I’ve had the Nooma and date syrup before but I think from other subscription boxes), which was great, but I’m still not sold on the gluten-free theme for a couple of reasons: (1) gluten-free snacks are more expensive so it means you get fewer items in the box each month, and (2) a lot of gluten-free snacks are just super starchy and I personally prefer much more fiber than starch from a nutritional standpoint. I’d strongly encourage Vegancuts to consider a separate GF subscription if they feel the need to stick with this trend, or at least quarterly GF boxes that could be purchased by those who need them. There are a lot of good non-GF vegan snacks out there, too!
