August 2019 Target Beauty Box Review

This month’s box is all about winding down from summer and falling into our fall beauty routines.

This info card provides a short description of each item sampled and on the flip side a Target coupon good for $3 off a beauty purchase of $15 or more. This month I received an in-store coupon that also includes a promo code you can redeem online.

Moving on to Target’s fall beauty picks!

MyBite Vitamins Beauty Inside & Out, 3 bites - Estimated Value $0.65 (Buy 60 for $12.99)

MyBite Vitamins Multivitamin, 2 bites - Estimated Value $0.43 (Buy 60 for $12.99)

This package contained 3 of the Inside & Out vitamins as well as 2 of MyBite's multivitamins, even though the package does not include that information. Both vitamins tasted pretty similar to each other, except that one is dark chocolate and the other is milk chocolate. MyBite Vitamins have 25 calories per serving (one morsel per serving), and the full-size product comes with 60 bites. These are perfect for someone who hates to swallow pills and is looking for an easy, enjoyable way to take their vitamins.

Aussie 3 Minute Miracle Moist Deep Conditioning Treatment, 1.7 fl oz - Estimated Value $0.64 (Buy 8 fl oz for $2.99)

Aussie has been around for what seems like forever, and this product is truly a classic. It smells great, and a 3-minute hair mask is a fast, easy option when you need some extra moisture, but you're in a rush. This treatment made my ends feel soft and not weighed down as some heavier conditioners can.

hello Activated Charcoal + Hemp Fluoride-Free Whitening Toothpaste, 1 oz - Estimated Value $1.75 (Buy 4 oz for $6.99)

What can't hemp do?? I was a little surprised to see this product in this month's box and was happy to try it out! Activated charcoal is supposed to lift surface stains to whiten as hemp oil soothes and moisturizes. I like the less astringent taste that charcoal toothpastes have, and this one's "homegrown mint" flavor leaves my mouth feeling clean and breath fresh.

Oral-B Interdental Picks, 50 count - Estimated Value $2.40 (Buy a 1oo count for $4.79)

Here is another sample I was pretty excited to try out. I am always looking for new ways to floss because, for some reason, it is such a task for me to use regular floss. These picks have flexible, rubberized tips that are supposed to glide right through the spaces between your teeth to help you remove food and plaque. I like the idea of these, but my teeth are so close together that I couldn't fit one of these between any of my teeth. I am also not a fan of the excess plastic used to make these, so I guess I will just stick to my regular, old minty floss!

Dove Men + Care Fresh and Clean 2 in 1, 3 fl oz - Retail Value $1.49

A men's shampoo was an interesting choice for this month. I have to say, the fragrance of this shampoo is quite invigorating to start the day with; it is not an overly masculine scent, but instead, it is fresh and maybe a little woodsy. This fortifying blend contains caffeine which is supposed to stimulate growth for men with thinning or fine hair. This two-in-one also enabled me to brush my fingers through my hair without too much difficulty. Not bad for a men's shampoo!

Herbal Essences Bio:Renew Birch Bark Extract Sulfate-Free Shampoo, 0.33 oz - Estimated Value $.16 (Buy 12.2 oz for $5.99)

Herbal Essences Bio:Renew Birch Bark Extract Conditioner, 0.33 oz - Estimated Value $.13 (Buy 13.5 oz for $5.99)

I'll always love Herbal Essences, but sample packets are sometimes frustrating to receive in subscriptions (especially this month's very low-value box!). This duo did the trick without the use of sulfates, parabens, gluten or colorants, and I really enjoyed the very fragrant floral scent which seemed to linger all day.

Verdict: Target’s fall picks seemed a little random to me. Don't get me wrong, I will certainly be utilizing most samples, but to me, there really wasn't a theme here — just a few products thrown together. The value of this box is $7.65, a little over the $7 box cost (which includes free shipping). Compared to last month's box, I am pretty disappointed in the value and the contents, but like I always say, these samples are always handy and will be used either way.

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? Yes, as of publication, this box is still available for purchase.

What do you think of the August Target Beauty Box?

I’m a self-proclaimed “cool mom” who loves a little, who am I kidding, a lot of razzle-dazzle. I have been box-obsessed for over 10 years, and I am always on the hunt for new beauty, fun flair and trendy clothing boxes. A fun night for me includes an exfoliating foot mask and a bag of Dot's Pretzels while binging Rupaul’s Drag Race.

This box is now free with a $40 beauty purchase at Target. If you have a red card you get 5% off and at least what I bought was cheaper at Target than on the manufacturers site even before the discount.

I just tried to buy this one, and now it is saying it will only ship with an order of $25 or more! I was just getting it to do a comparison of the Walmart beauty box vs the Target beauty box on my YT channel, but it was a hard pass once I saw that change!

Even though the web page states you’ll pay shipping, when I put the box in my shopping cart, the shipping is showing as free.

Cindy

Probably because they can’t even give these boxes away.

My last Walmart box was actually better than this one! Glad I skipped it, but very sorry to see how far downhill this box has gone. They used to be so good and it was fun trying to get online and get one the morning they came out. Now, as everyone has pointed out, they seem to linger until the price drops to what it’s worth paying.

I found a stack of older boxes at our local target for $3.50 recently… the one with the Native deodorant. That’s really the max one should spend on the last few target boxes… thanks for the review!

I don’t think you need to say it sells out very quickly anymore. You can buy several months worth of past boxes. I haven’t seen one sell out within minutes in a very long time.

Sarah

I wouldn’t consider this a beauty box, more like a personal hygiene box… A little disappointing

I think they could have marketed this as “family” or “couple” samples
men shampoo, women shampoo, both try the picks & vitamin bites. But I don’t like to share my toothpaste if possible.

Marion

I wish they had 2 boxes this month. Usually they’ll do an additional beauty-focused box when they have one like this that’s heavy on more hygiene products.

I didn’t buy one.

I must admit, in recent months, the Target beauty boxes have been underwhelming. For that reason, they aren’t selling as quickly as they once did and now we see these big sales where the boxes are being “let go” for $5.00 a piece. I hope they continue to do their monthly beauty boxes, however I do hope the curation improves (like it used to be last year and years past). C’mon Target, I have faith in you. 🙂

Wow, $7.65 for a $7 box with confusing curation. Who is this for?

I think it’s time MSA take off the line these boxes sell out fast!!! It’s been a loooong time since that was true!

With a few tweaks they could have turned this into an interesting gender neutral oral care box. Keep the vitamins, picks, and the toothpaste, then throw in a quality lip balm like Nivea or Ceravie, and maybe toss in the shampoo foil packets as a bonus. Still, I’m glad they sent the 50 pack of picks as advertised. Last month, they advertised an 8 pack of the Nexxus product, then only sent a single sample. It appears Target has since updated the Beauty Bos photo on their website.

I caved, went and bought the July box. It’s the only one of the several boxes still available that I think is actually worth it. My daughter loves the simply brand, I will use the acure and try the frizz sheet. Shampoo, conditioner and toothpaste will go in the donation box.

July was my favorite they’ve done in a long time! Enjoy 🙂

My daughter was happy with this box, so it must depend on what products you need.

I want someone to tell me what’s so bloody HOT about this box? Hey, if they are going to describe their box like this, they should have some sort of oomph behind it.

Serina

Abby, can you please talk about how those vitamin candies tasted? Do they taste as delicious as a normal choclate bar? Do they have a vitamin flavor or aftertaste? Vitamin gummies don’t taste the same as really gummies, so I’m just wondering how these chocolates are. Thank you!

Reply ButtonReply

Abby Holsinger

Definitely not up to candy bar standards, but they were sweet enough. I didn’t detect any type of aftertaste, but I am constantly eating nowadays so it is hard to tell. Plus the bites are so small! I would compare them to a bar that is marketed as a health or protein bar. Hope that helps 🙂

What ever happened to Target? This box (as are all of the ones this year plus) just stink. I used to love to wait for the release and then buy it without even looking at it…just wanted to hurry so I could make sure I got the box. And now? egads…

Reply ButtonReply

StellaMarina

Me too. I skipped this one because the best thing about it was the cute design on the box. I miss the curation of past Target boxes.

Shai

Remember when target boxes were so good they sold out when they released?
