Sensory TheraPlay Box August 2019 Review

We received this one-page insert which includes photos of our items on the front with brief descriptions of them along with their retail values on the back. They also included their contact information and have made an eco-friendly move by incorporating their disclaimer, which used to arrive on a separate card, onto the page as well!

They always send a nice little motivational card each month. This one features a quote from one of my favorite bedtime books, On the Night You Were Born by Nancy Tillman. I love the fun illustration to go along with it!

Clear Mini Mochi Animals - Retail Value $3.99, Listed Value $4.99 (on sale here for $3.50)

The first item in our box are these cute little mini mochi animals. Looks like we received a little duck and a little bear. My kids loved these, but I don't see these lasting us long since they are smaller and dirt seems to cling to them. They are soft, squishy and fit in the palm of your hand, so they make an ideal fidget toy since you can squeeze them as much as you want.

PlayMonster Yeti Forgetti - Retail Value $11.99 (Currently on sale here for $9.97)

This game is our favorite item this month! We love all things Yeti and already enjoy another game from this franchise (Yeti in my Spaghetti) a lot, so to receive this was a welcome surprise! This game is a small set, too making it ideal for travel and possibly even playing at a restaurant. This is a hide-and-peek memory game for 2 to 4 players ages 4 and up. According to our information sheet, this game is designed to help with "visual memory, social skills, turn-taking, and fine motor skills" so it seems like it can teach a variety of skills and would be a fun game for a smaller group setting (I'm thinking speech or occupational therapy interventions!).

You get four little igloos, four adorable yetis (is it weird that I think their little bottoms look cute?), a snow crab, and a set of cards. To play, you shuffle the cards and place them face down. Then you set out the yetis and snow crabs in the center where everyone can see them. Then you place the igloos on top of them and try to remember where they all are as you begin to play.

You take turns drawing a card and each of the cards indicates a different move. The first with the red arrow means to swap two igloos without lifting them and the card with the blue arrow allows the player who drew it to secretively peek under the igloo. The card with the blue arrow and red question mark allows the player to "reveal" what's underneath to everyone, although you have to be careful not to accidentally select the snow crab! The yeti cards mean that player has to reveal or show where that colored yeti is located and if they are correct they get to keep that card. If they reveal the snow crab instead, they have to give back one of the cards they have collected! The first player to collect three cards is the winner! This is a simple and fun game that is just challenging enough!

Fun & Function Dinosaur Dig Discovery Putty - Retail Value $14.99

This next item is another favorite because we love dinos in our house! This putty is dino dig themed and comes in a nice tin container with some safety instructions. This putty provides both a visual and tactile experience while also helping to develop fine motor skills.

The putty itself is slightly firm and a beautiful, sparkly metallic gold. They also included twelve little dinosaur fossils and shapes that we can use to bury in the putty to dig out, or to use for creating our own fossil shapes within the putty. I thought all the shapes were really cool and this was a fun set that my kids enjoy playing with!

Monkey Sensory Rings - Listed Value $4.99 (Buy a set of 10 here for $8.99)

These rings are pretty cool! They are made of shiny silver and gold metal and are a really unique texture with their spiky shape. They are a great fidget toy to play with as they roll over your fingers and they are even listed as acupressure rings since they press into your skin as you roll them.

I liked the way that they felt, although a bit tight for my fingers, but the kids weren't as into them as I thought they would be!

Manimo Half Moon Ball - Listed Value $8.99 (Found here for $7.50)

In addition to being really pretty with the dark blue color and shiny metallic dot patterns all over it, this half moon ball is really fun to play with. It has a little bit of stretch to it and a bit of weight to it due to whatever it is filled with. It is fun to just hold in your hand and feel since the little dots provide a tactile experience, or you can squish, squeeze, stretch or even toss this little guy to keep you busy!

SmartKnit Kids SPD Sleeves - Retail Value $5.00

These arm sleeves are made from 90% nylon and 10% rayon, provide light compression, have an SPF of 50 plus, and can keep you warm in cool temperatures or cool in warm temperatures. The orange color allows you to show your support for Sensory Processing Disorder Awareness, which is a pretty cool item for this box to include! In addition to providing warmth or cooling, these sleeves can also provide a calming and comforting pressure or provide sensory input. They did include a little note on the card that these may not be for every kid and that you should use your best judgment with regards to these!

I did have my daughter try it on to give you a sense of scale. I think she liked the feel of them and I could see these being helpful for a child with sensory needs.

They also included a 20% off coupon code!

Verdict: I really enjoyed this month's Sensory TheraPlay Box and thought it was a well-rounded mix of items that could provide a lot of support for those with sensory processing issues. This was another unique curation that my kids enjoyed and I think it addressed a broad range of skills from the memory game to the fidget toys to the putty for fine motor skill development. With a combination of listed value and retail values, I estimate the items in this box to come to about $49.95. While that isn't much over the $47.86 ($39.95 plus $7.91 shipping) cost of the box, I think there is some additional value in the curation, so this box still feels like a decent value to me, but ultimately, I think it comes down to how well the items in this box meet the needs of your child!

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? No, you will receive the October box, but this box is currently available as a one-time purchase in their shop. To receive the "current" box, you must sign up on or before the last day of the previous month.

Value Breakdown: This box costs $47.86 ($39.95 + $7.91 shipping) and we received 6 items which means that each of the items in this box has an average cost of $7.98.

I am a homeschooling mom to 4 kids; 1 girl and 3 boys. While I have been reviewing boxes since 2018 and I love the luxury of trying new products, I'm also balancing it out by dabbling in a little bit of homesteading, too. We now have 4 chickens and a rabbit and my sourdough starter is going strong! I love learning about new brands and sharing the great things I find with others in hopes that they find something new to love or to fit their needs!
