Love with Food Deluxe Box August 2019 Review

Love with Food August 2019 - information card 1Love with Food August 2019 - information card 2

The information card isn’t super informative anymore.

Love with Food August 2019 - Straw Ad 1Love with Food August 2019 - Straw Ad 2Love with Food August 2019 - Wine 1Love with Food August 2019 - Wine 2

There is often product literature or coupons. Usually it relates to items in the box, but sometimes it doesn’t. If you're curious about Naked Wines, Megan can give you the full report.

Love with Food August 2019 - Appleways Apple Simply Wholesome Oatmeal Bar 1Love with Food August 2019 - Appleways Apple Simply Wholesome Oatmeal Bar 2

Appleways Apple Simply Wholesome Oatmeal Bar (1.2 oz) – Buy 15 for $15 (found here for $13.25)

You should think of this pretty much as a cookie and you’ll be happier that way. This is lower in sugar than I would expect, but it does still have a fair amount, and although it has a little bit of whole grain flour, it has a lot of non-whole-grain flour as well. But it is soft and pretty tasty and it didn’t fall apart when I opened the package and those are all good things. I am pretty sure this is a repeat item.

Love with Food August 2019 - Bobo’s Oat Bites in Coconut 1Love with Food August 2019 - Bobo’s Oat Bites in Coconut 2

Bobo’s Oat Bites in Coconut (1.3 oz) – Buy 30 for $26.94

This is another repeat item. It is tasty but rather high in fat because of the coconut content (it is whole grain for real, though!). These don’t have calorie information on the individual packages and I wish they did as they are actually 160 calories each, which is rather a lot for something so small (the oat bar up above was only 140 for the whole thing). These are gluten-free if that is of concern to you. These also do not fall apart in the package, unlike some 100% coconut cookies, so that is nice.

Love with Food August 2019 - Crunchsters Bar-B-Q 1Love with Food August 2019 - Crunchsters Bar-B-Q 2

Crunchsters Bar-B-Q (1.3 oz) – Buy 6 Bags for $9.99

I am pretty sure we got this just a month or two ago in the same flavor. Don’t get me wrong, I do like BBQ flavors in savory snacks. These are sprouted mung beans and they are tiny. I wasn’t sure the best way to eat them so my husband and I ended up pouring them into small bowls and eating with a spoon. If you were just going to snack on them, I’d think you could just cut open the pouch and pour them into your mouth. They’re too small to be finger food. These have a lot of fiber and protein and potassium as well as some other minerals.

Love with Food August 2019 - Prince of Peace Peanut Butter Ginger Chews 1Love with Food August 2019 - Prince of Peace Peanut Butter Ginger Chews 2

Prince of Peace Peanut Butter Ginger Chews (3 oz) – Retail Value $1.99

And here is another item we’ve had before. The peanut butter is noticeable but not overwhelming (you couldn’t have too much or they’d cease to be ginger chews) and I think it makes this variety a little less sticky than some of the others, which is good. (Watch your dental work, though.) These seem to be out of stock in a lot of places right now.

Love with Food August 2019 - Kodiak Cakes Bear Bites Frontier Graham Crackers in Honey 1Love with Food August 2019 - Kodiak Cakes Bear Bites Frontier Graham Crackers in Honey 2

Kodiak Cakes Bear Bites Frontier Graham Crackers in Honey (1.06 oz) – Buy 9 oz for $5.50

This was a new item for me. It is whole grain and has some added protein from milk (it also has honey and egg whites, so it is vegetarian but not vegan and also not gluten-free). These tasted and had the texture of regular graham crackers (basically) but with more protein. I am sure it would defeat the point of whatever diet these were intended for, but I think they would work pretty well as a cheesecake crust if you crumbled them up.

Love with Food August 2019 - Grenade Carb Killa Go Nuts Protein Bar in Salted Peanut 1Love with Food August 2019 - Grenade Carb Killa Go Nuts Protein Bar in Salted Peanut 2

Grenade Carb Killa Go Nuts Protein Bar in Salted Peanut (1.41 oz) – Retail Value $2.19

This company makes some protein bars I can’t have because they have gelatin, but this is vegan so I tried it. It doesn’t have as much flavor as I would have hoped, but it isn’t terrible and it is nicely balanced in terms of protein, fat, and fiber. The chocolate part on the bottom separated from the nut part after about one bite; I don’t think they’re connected well. This item was also new for me.

Love with Food August 2019 - Janis and Melanie Key Lime Cookies 1Love with Food August 2019 - Janis and Melanie Key Lime Cookies 2

Janis and Melanie Key Lime Cookies (1.5 oz) – Retail Value $2.10

This is an item we’ve had from Love with Food several times before. I do like them and am never sad to see them but I wonder if they are taking up space in the box that could be used for something new. I should order from Janis and Melanie’s website because they have some cheese straws and some other cookies I also like a lot.

Love with Food August 2019 - Macro Snacks BBQ Sauce 1

Love with Food August 2019 - Macro Snacks BBQ Sauce 2

Macro Snacks BBQ Sauce (1.2 oz) – Buy 6 Bags for $18.99 (found here for $16.99)

These are vegan and gluten-free and the idea is supposed to be that they are balanced in macronutrients but in practice what that seems to mean is they are high in protein and relatively high in starch and have less fat and fiber than I would expect. Unfortunately, the manufacturer was apparently so focused on ingredients and nutrition that texture was neglected – although these taste good, they did not have a pleasant texture. It’s hard to explain, but it was kind of like chewing on old bread that had been toasted to make croutons, but maybe not for long enough? This was a new item for me, though.

Love with Food August 2019 - Tillamook Country Smoker Original Smoked Meat Stick 1Love with Food August 2019 - Tillamook Country Smoker Original Smoked Meat Stick 2

Tillamook Country Smoker Original Smoked Meat Stick (1 oz) – Buy 24 for $27.60 (found here for $24)

I am a vegetarian and my husband is not into meat snacks, so I handed this off to someone who would appreciate it a bit more. It seemed well-received. Please note that this does contain nitrites if that is something you are watching out for.

Love with Food August 2019 - Orgain Kids Protein Nutritional Shake in Chocolate

Orgain Kids Protein Nutritional Shake in Chocolate (8.25 oz) – Buy 12 for $24.99

I don’t know why kids would need protein shakes, but I guess if you struggle with a picky eater this could be useful, because there are also vitamins and minerals. This has milk protein so it kind of tastes like chocolate milk, and I can see how that would be a draw for a kid as well. This reminds me a lot of the Orgain drinks for adults.

Love with Food August 2019 - Paleo Puffs No Cheese Cheesiness 1Love with Food August 2019 - Paleo Puffs No Cheese Cheesiness 2

Paleo Puffs No Cheese Cheesiness (1 oz) – Buy 9, 5 oz Bags for $29.99

These have a 28g serving size and of that, 17g is starch (mostly from cassava but also some from sweet potato). I guess if you are eating the Paleo diet and craving something starchy, this would work for you. It’s also vegan and if you don’t eat cheese I think this might make you think a little bit of cheese, but I do eat cheese and this doesn’t really taste like cheese at all. I am honestly not much of a fan of these because I tend to prefer snacks with more fiber and protein to them, just in terms of texture and keeping me full for longer. This is a (multiple occurrence) repeat item.

Love with Food August 2019 - Popcorners Kettle Corn 1Love with Food August 2019 - Popcorners Kettle Corn 2

Popcorners Kettle Corn (0.5 oz) – Buy 12, 7 oz Bags for $30

Here is another multiple-time repeat item with a texture and flavor combination I really don’t care for. I don’t mind some of the other flavors (i.e., the savory ones) of Popcorners but something doesn’t sit right with me about the kettle corn ones. These are gluten-free and vegan if that is of concern to you.

Love with Food August 2019 - 4505 Chicharrones Fried Pork Rinds in Classic Chili and Salt

4505 Chicharrones Fried Pork Rinds in Classic Chili and Salt (1 oz) – Buy 6, 1 oz Bags for $15

I asked my husband if he wanted to try these and he said “no” pretty fast. So this is another one I had to pass off to someone else. These are pork rinds and although they say they are made from pork without antibiotics or added hormones, it’s actually illegal in the US to sell pork that has been raised with added hormones, so that part of the label is not necessary. The antibiotic thing is more important, though, since a lot of pigs in the US are treated with antibiotics to promote growth, etc.

Love with Food August 2019 - Double Dutch Caramel Stroopwafel 1Love with Food August 2019 - Double Dutch Caramel Stroopwafel 2

Double Dutch Caramel Stroopwafel (1.16 oz) – Buy 15 for $21 (found here for $18)

This is another repeat item. (There were a LOT of repeat items this month.) I love stroopwafels, though, so I happily ate this. I just feel like I know about these already and it would be easy to buy more, and I’d prefer to learn about some new snacks.

Love with Food August 2019 - Healthycell Bioactive Multi 1Love with Food August 2019 - Healthycell Bioactive Multi 2

Healthycell Bioactive Multi (1 serving) – Get 2 Free Packets (just pay $2.95 shipping and handling)

This is vegetarian and is supposed to be better at delivering vitamins and minerals in a bioavailable form. However, these packets are about $2 each which is actually quite a lot when I can get a year’s worth of multivitamin pills from Walgreens for like $12 during a sale. I tried it and it isn’t bad to just take as a shot (it can also be blended into a smoothie or food). But this really isn’t a product for me. I know there are people who want to take vitamins but can’t swallow large pills, and this could be quite useful for someone like that.

Love with Food August 2019 - Welch’s Fruit Snacks Superfruit Mix

Welch’s Fruit Snacks Superfruit Mix (0.8 oz) – Buy 10 Packs for $9.95

These have gelatin but my husband was willing to try them. He said they were fine but he questioned why a common supermarket brand was in a food subscription box. (He says they’re the same ones his work used to keep on hand in the break room.) These are kind of high in sugar but they do provide a lot of vitamins A, C, and E, and the calories aren’t too bad. They are naturally colored, which is nice (no food dyes).

Love with Food August 2019 - Zeezee’s Roasted Sunflower Kernels 1Love with Food August 2019 - Zeezee’s Roasted Sunflower Kernels 2

Zeezee’s Roasted Sunflower Kernels (1 oz) – Buy 48 for $26.50

This is another repeat item. I do like them, and they could be good for kids at peanut-free schools. Plus, they are not in the shells, which makes them a lot less work… Also they are pretty affordable, honestly, at only around 55 cents a bag.

Verdict: There were 17 items in the August 2019 Love with Food Deluxe Box. This was not the best month for me. There were a lot of repeats (Paleo Puffs, Popcorners, Crunchsters, Janis and Melanie cookies, Prince of Peace ginger chews, Zeezee’s sunflower seeds, stroopwafel, Bobo’s oat bite, possibly the Appleways bar, etc.), and at least three non-vegetarian items (Welch’s fruit snacks, pork rinds, meat sticks) and one item (the vitamins) that you can get in a larger size from the manufacturer as a free sample. I understand that this does not promise to be a vegetarian box, and I’m OK with passing off some items to family, coworkers, etc. if I can’t eat them. But it’s just that there wasn’t very much that was new for me to try this month and some of the repeats aren’t even from all that far in the past. On the plus side, at least they didn’t try to send much chocolate because melted chocolate in summer used to be a constant problem for Love with Food. Here’s crossing my fingers that next month will be a little better fit.

What was the total value of the box-is it normally a greater value than the cost of the subscription? Thanks!

I wish I had received the lime cookies as they are so delicious!

Ragan

They are very good. So are the raspberry ones, and the cheese straws. I used Love with Food points to get a whole bunch of Janis and Melanie stuff once. I should probably just order from their website as they have some other things that also sound good.

Hi Ragan,
When is the best time to use our points? Whenever I go to see what’s available the best products are sold out.

Claire

Thanks for the review, Ragan. Some of the items I received were different from yours, and I did not know that those Welch’s gums have gelatin in them.

Ragan

I just always assume gummies have gelatin and read the ingredients (unless they come in Vegan Cuts or something and then I don’t worry about it). Same for marshmallows. And, unfortunately, now I have to read the ingredients for protein bars as well, since collagen bars and bars with gelatin (which is hydrolyzed collagen) are becoming much more common.
