Lip Monthly August 2019 Review

Our theme for this month is "Beauty Time" and it looks like they have chosen to forego the listed items and values which they have sometimes used in the past. Instead, there is a note about how summer is flying by (yes!) and that the lippies we are receiving are "stellar!"

Each month, Lip Monthly sends their products in a little soft fabric makeup bag which is just a bit bigger than an iPhone plus (although not quite big enough to fit one inside). This burnt orange bag with little starfish all over is fitting for the end of summer!

Hikari Lip Liner in Playful - Retail Value $15.00

The first product I tried this month was a lip liner from Hikari, which is a brand that is no stranger to these bags. I love the slim and sleek square-shaped tube and how small and precise that point is. The color is also really pretty and one I could see myself wearing, but unfortunately, this liner is so very firm that it was difficult to use! I'm thinking that maybe my tube is older because this color is currently out of stock and the description reads "glides on smoothly, stays creamy" and it does neither of those things.

Here I have it on over my entire lip and it really took some work to get it on since it was so dry.

Luna by Luna Lip Oil in Cosmo- Retail Value $18

I have actually received this product before (in another color, Queen, in my October 2018 bag) and it is one that I like! It feels more like a gloss than a lip oil to me, but it is hydrating and while it is supposed to provide some sheer color, I don't notice much on my lips. The unique gel texture is supposed to help minimize fine lines and wrinkles in your lips and since I sort of forgot about this one in my stash, I'll have to test it out again once winter comes and my dry lips resume!

Here is the lip oil on. Just a touch of shine!

Doop Cosmetics Lip Gloss in Peak

This lip gloss is just so pretty with the frosted glass tube and that metallic shimmer peeking through! I also really like the applicator which is flat on both sides and this sparkly gloss is just such a pretty color. This brand must also be really new because a quick search didn't even bring it up and they are all listed as "coming soon." That being said, I am not even sure what to estimate this at, although their site does say that they want to provide "high-quality, high-performing products without the high-end price." The gloss itself isn't super long-lasting, but I do like the formula and only find it a tad sticky. It also has a slight vanilla scent to it which I always enjoy!

Here is the gloss on. It definitely has a lot of shine to it!

ModelCo Lipstick in Tango Pink

This little lipstick tube is pretty fun since it appears to be completely monochromatic right down to the lipstick inside! It also has a really fun passionfruit (or "tango" scent) when you apply it. I could not find this lipstick online anywhere nor could I find anything comparable. The formula for this one is creamy and smooth and it actually has pretty decent staying power. The color might have a bit too much orange for me, but I like wearing this one since it goes on so smoothly and provides such even color!

Here is the lipstick on. Just one swipe provides a lot of pigment!

Here it is with a swipe of the Doop gloss over it. You can see how much it amps up the color!

Here they are swatched. In order from top to bottom, they are ModelCo, Doop, Luna by Luna, and Hikari.

Verdict: I was pleased with the colors I received this month from Lip Monthly and the only real miss for me was that Hikari liner since it was so hard to use and possibly dried out. Had the formula been creamy and smooth I think it would be an easy winner though since I liked the packaging and color! I am happy that this month's colors had a lot of pigment (other than the lip oil) and they finally seemed to stray away from the nude colors that I am not a fan of! While I couldn't find the retail values for some items this month, I still think it's a pretty great value for $12.95 since that means you are only paying $3.24 for each lip product!

I am a homeschooling mom to 4 kids; 1 girl and 3 boys. While I have been reviewing boxes since 2018 and I love the luxury of trying new products, I'm also balancing it out by dabbling in a little bit of homesteading, too. We now have 4 chickens and a rabbit and my sourdough starter is going strong! I love learning about new brands and sharing the great things I find with others in hopes that they find something new to love or to fit their needs!

This was my last month out of a 3 month sub. What a complete waste of money. I’ve never gotten return emails. Never received some products. Received old products and products I definitely wouldn’t have chosen like a Coral in a bag with a nude lip of their brand that would barely budge on my lips. I requested berry colors. Save your money.

I’ve been with Lip Monthly since late 2014 and have never had any kind of issue.

I got a different bag, too, but I think I had the starfish one before, so it seems like they are repeating bags now. Kind of disappointing, but I often use mine as a way to “package” items for my swaps on the swap site, anyway, so I don’t keep most of the bags.

I got the same products as you did, though. Usually there is some variation in colors for different subscribers. This month was very “meh” for me, but I am wearing the Doop lip gloss at work today.

Thanks for sharing, Melissa! I’ve started using the bags to stash crayons and toys for my kids since I have so many of them! Using them for swaps is such a nice idea though and I’m sure it’s appreciated! 🙂

Awww I wish I had gotten that cute bag! Instead I got a repeat bag, pink with hearts. They must have run out of the summer bag.

I liked the Doop gloss, I find myself wearing that often, other than that I gave away the rest of the bag and cancelled the sub for now. I haven’t had bad luck with this one like some of the other ladies mentioned, but for now I’ll hold off and buy colors I’ll wear.

Thanks for the review 🙂 I will have to try the Doop as a topper now!

Oh no! Sorry about the bag! 🙁 But glad you like the Doop, too! Definitely try it as a topper! 🙂

Brandi, I think that Doop lip gloss in Peak looked really good on you! Good color. I tried this at end of last yr and when I cancelled they said I was in for 3 months! I didnt recall that but gave it a go anyway. I liked the products but not the way the 1 month trial turned into 3.

Thanks, Cindy! 🙂 And yeah, I wouldn’t be too happy about 1 month turning into 3 either! Thanks for sharing your experience!

I had this subscription sometime last year…..and loved the thought of just lippies! I had some sort of deal that was a 3 month sub. Took awhile to receive the first one….then months went by and I finally had to email several times about not receiving by second and then third bag. Customer service was a disaster. I did finally receive the bags…..2nd and 3rd together…after much anger on my part with numerous emails!!! Hopefully things are better……and if I read that people are getting the products on time and things are great…I just may resub again!!

That’s frustrating! 🙁 I’m glad you were able to get it sorted out finally though! Thanks for sharing your experience – hopefully they are turning it around! Keep checking comments! Readers like you all are the best at letting us know what is and isn’t working! 🙂

Had the worst customer service experience with Lip Monthly. Never received my bag and never got my money back. That’s when the bag was only $10. Granted, that was over a year ago but still. Really bad experience. Never again.

Thanks for sharing! That totally stinks! It sounds like a lot of the issues were sometime last year so I would hope that they’ve turned things around by now! 🙁
