Bulu Box August 2019 Review

There isn’t a theme for Bulu Box and there is some personalization involved, so the contents are usually a surprise:

Bulu Box August 2019 - Booklet Front TopBulu Box August 2019 - Booklet Back Top

Because of the variations with this subscription, there’s not a traditional information card listing the items. This month, the information card indicated there would be 2x the healthy snacks, and there was definitely more in the box than usual. I’m not sure if this is going to be a regular thing or was just a special for this month.

There are also usually some coupons and/or product literature with this subscription. They don’t always relate to the items in the box, although sometimes they do. There was an excessive amount of product literature this month. For what it’s worth, the watch coupon expired in January. The others seemed to be current.

Bulu Box August 2019 - Alaskan Salmon Oil Top

Pure Alaska Omega 100% Natural Wild Alaskan Salmon Oil (1000 mg, 2 softgels) – Buy 210 Capsules for $18.66

Fish oil contains omega-3 fatty acids and can be good for skin condition as well as reducing cholesterol (mostly triglycerides) and may also be good for the joints, especially in combination with glucosamine and chondroitin supplements. (If you are vegan or vegetarian, there are algae-based supplements that do the same thing.) Although you won’t see results from only two pills, this is at least enough to make sure you don’t have fish breath afterwards and to make sure the size of the pills won’t be an issue for you. This brand seems well-reviewed, in general.

Bulu Box August 2019 - Gluten Free Granola Top

Bakery on Main Gluten-Free Granola in Cranberry Almond Maple (1.1 oz x 2) – Buy 50 Bags for $50

This is gluten-free and is actually made with multigrain/bean crisps. I’ve had it before and it’s not bad. I like the texture and the fruit/nut/crisp ratio. Now I have a lot of it because there were also two bags in the weight loss version this month. It’s also vegan if that is of concern to you.

Bulu Box August 2019 - Beef Jerky Top

Certified Piedmontese All Natural Beef Jerky in Hickory (1.25 oz x 2) – Buy 4 Bags for $15.95

I am a vegetarian and my husband is not a jerky fan so I passed this along to someone else. I don’t know how much jerky costs but this seems to be a premium product since each of these little bags is worth like $4 on its own. It’s kind of nice that this is tied into one of the ads from earlier, as well, so you can test a little of their product line before making a purchase. This is from the Piedmontese breed of cattle raised at ranches in the American Midwest.

Bulu Box August 2019 - J-Gen Top

J-Gen (2 powder packets) – Buy 30 Packets for $22.00

This is an anti-aging supplement. It has collagen, which is good for skin, hair, and nails, and hyaluronic acid, which is good for the joints. However, neither of those are vegetarian so I was unable to try this. It also has some antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals that may help fight aging as well, or just provide general nutrition that’s good for your skin. There is nothing sketchy in here and all the ingredients seem pretty safe. If you don’t want to take a bunch of separate pills or buy 3 or 4 different powders, this could be a nice mix for you. It is fruit flavored so you could drink it alone or mix it into a smoothie.

Bulu Box August 2019 - Dermactin-TS Line Eraser Top

Dermactin-TS Line Eraser (2 foil packets) – Buy 0.34 oz for $9.74

This is supposed to help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. But it is tinted to a tone that doesn’t work for my skin at all (makes me look orange, and is probably also too light for people with darker skin; I guess that’s the purpose of the iron oxides in the ingredients list). You might be able to get this to work under makeup and get over the skin tone issue. This doesn’t actually treat the fine lines and wrinkles from what I can tell, it is more of a concealer-type product.

Bulu Box August 2019 - Oki Active Hemp Extract Top

Oki Active Hemp Extract with MSM and Turmeric (2 capsules) – Buy 60 Capsules for $70

I am just not on the CBD bandwagon, folks. This is expensive stuff and there’s no guarantee that it contains what it says or that it does anything. Even products marketed as “all-natural” may contain synthetic cannabinoids that cause hallucinations and such. (See this article from the New York Times last week.) Some of the CBD claims remind me of old-school snake oil salesmen. I also don’t really have a problem with remaining calm, which is what this particular product is aimed at doing.

Bulu Box August 2019 - Pure Essence Ionic Fizz Magnesium Plus Top

Pure Essence Ionic Fizz Magnesium Plus in Raspberry Lemonade (4 servings) – Buy 12.06 oz for $29.99

This is a magnesium supplement that seems to be a competitor for Natural Calm, which is something I do like. Magnesium can help with muscle pain (think about taking a bath in Epsom salts) and blood pressure and *may* help you sleep better. It also may help with constipation. I find this best to drink on its own (it takes over the flavor of smoothies) and it does mix pretty well if you use a little more water than recommended and leave it for a bit. Don’t take it every day for a long period or you could have problems with dropping calcium levels (magnesium and calcium compete for binding sites on some cells and an oversupply of magnesium may lead to issues), but for a couple of days in a row or every now and then, or every day if you also take a calcium supplement, you’ll be fine.

Bulu Box August 2019 - Sportea Front TopBulu Box August 2019 - Sportea Back Top

Sportea (2 bags) – Buy 20 Bags for $11.65

This has shown up in Bulu Box before, but it’s been a long while. It’s a blend of black and green teas with ginger, but it has Siberian ginseng (eleuthero) that gives it a little bit of a medicinal taste, which is maybe not my favorite (this flavor seems to be reduced if you don’t steep for too long, which makes it a little better). It’s promoted as a sugar-free energy drink and it is good for a little pick-me-up if you don’t want sugar or all the caffeine of coffee.

Verdict: This month’s box had 16 (just counting every individual packet separately instead of trying anything more complicated) samples, so they’d average about $0.63 each. There was so much this month that even if one or two things don’t work for you, you’re still likely to get a lot of things that will work. I am a fan of the granola, for example, and I like to have magnesium drinks every now and then, and I like tea, and I was happy to have the Line Eraser to try, so it didn’t sting very much to pass along the beef jerky – I still felt like there was plenty in the box for me.

I’d strongly recommend using a coupon code when you subscribe and choosing either the regular or the weight loss box, but not both, since there is a lot of product repetition between the two.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? No, September would be your first shipment. Also keep in mind that there are variations in the boxes, so your box might not be exactly like mine in any given month.

I assume that the 2x snacks was a special deal for just this month. The only products that excited me were the granola and the jerky.

They accidentally sent me 3 of the tea bags. I thought it was 2 at first, but it turned out that 2 were stuck together. I put them up for swap as 2 tea bags before I noticed, so I guess whoever I swap with will get a small bonus of an extra bag. 🙂

Darn! Just realized my jerky is “bold and spicy.” Too hot for me. Will have to give away or swap the unopened bag.

They’ve went to month-to-month subscriptions only and I prefer paying for a six or twelve month sub so I’m out.
