Birchbox Limited Edition 'Ready for Takeoff' Box Review

open clear baggie with all contents

Everything arrived in a waterproof clear bag with a charming red zipper.

front of info booklet back of booklet inside with all products and info

The info card inside lists all the items and breaks them down into the following categories: Skincare, Haircare, Body & Oral Care, and Makeup. Loads of stuff inside this bag!

JUARA Rice Facial Cleanser, 0.85 fl oz - Estimated Value $5.48 (Buy a full-size 4.5 oz for $29.00)

This watery gel cleanser has a natural creamy scent. I actually found the formula too watery for my liking. It kind of ran down my face as I tried to rub it into my skin. It did an okay job of removing my light makeup, but I prefer a cleanser with more substance.

PETER THOMAS ROTH Cucumber Gel Mask, 0.5 fl oz - Estimated Value $5.50 (Buy a full-size 5 oz for $55.00)

A cooling mask like this is exactly what a face needs after a day in the sunshine. This formula is aloe rich and very cooling. I stashed mine in my fridge before using it on an especially hot afternoon and wow! My redness was almost completely gone when I washed it off and my skin felt moisturized without heaviness.

Avène Micellar Lotion, 3.3 fl oz - Estimated Value $8.87 (Buy a full-size 6.7 fl oz for $18.00)

YES. I LOVE liquid lotions and I use them at least twice a day. They are also great options for a misting bottle for a quick spritz here and there, adding a little moisture to your face and refreshing makeup with a natural dewiness. This lotion smells great and is very moisturizing. I like to add a few drops to a cotton round and smooth the liquid over my face after cleansing at night and before my serum. The advantage of this particular formula is the addition of micellar water, which purifies and removes any leftover makeup and dirt your cleanser may have missed.

Air Repair Complexion Quenching Facial Mist, 2 oz. - Full Size! Retail Value $10.00

This brand was basically designed to help skin that has been up in the air, so it was a perfect addition to this box. I always take a mist on every flight because cabin air is so dry and gross! This formula smells super clean and fresh, and is full of hydrating hyaluronic acid.

Dr. Jart+ Water Fuse Ultimate Hydro Gel, 0.34 fl oz - Estimated Value $7.80 (Buy a full-size 1.7 oz for $39.00)

Wow, they really nailed some of the best products for sad, travel-worn skin. This lightweight gel is moisturizing without being heavy. A little goes a long way, making this pot perfect for more than just one trip. Because it has both hyaluronic acid and peptides, your skin will feel plump as well as hydrated.

Beautycounter Countersun Mineral Sunscreen Lotion SPF 30, 1 fl oz - Estimated Value $5.82 (Buy a full-size 6.7 oz for $39.00)

Did you know sun damage is magnified the closer you are to the sun? Meaning when you are off jet-setting, those hours you spend in the air require extra sun protection. This little tube of SPF 30 is perfect for adding that extra layer of protection to your skin without that greasy sunscreen feeling. It is also waterproof, so if you love the formula in the air, take it to the beach or pool, too!

Davines MOMO Moisturizing Shampoo, 2.5 fl oz - Travel Size! Retail Value $11.50 (Buy the travel size 2.5 ml here or buy a full size 8.45 fl oz for $29.00 here)

If you read any of my reviews, you know I am a haircare minimalist. I don't use many hair products or have many favorite brands, but Davines is one of them (along with my beloved OUAI)! Honestly, I could be fine with these two brands alone and be hair-happy! This particular shampoo is for dry hair in need of moisture. I usually avoid "moisture" shampoos because I don't wash my hair every day and find that my roots get oily very quickly when I use them. This shampoo didn't seem to contribute to that though, and I felt like my roots were extra clean. It has a really interesting melon scent that is more perfumy than fruity somehow.

Davines MOMO Moisturizing Conditioner, 2.5 fl oz - Travel Size! Retail Value $13.50 (Buy the travel size 2.5 ml here or buy a full size 8.45 fl oz for $33.00 here)

Ok, super pleased that we also received the MOMO conditioner. I loved this stuff too because it has the same delightful scent and wow does it pack a moisturizing punch! A little went a very long way, which I always appreciate. This formula is so thick and kind of felt more like a mask than a normal conditioner. It had that same delicious melon scent and I could still smell the fragrance in my hair the next day.

Alterna CAVIAR Anti-Aging Replenishing Moisture Priming Leave-In Conditioner, 0.85 fl oz - Estimated Value $5.44 (Buy a full-size 5 oz for $32.00)

It seems almost unfair to write about this product when I just bragged about two of my favorite haircare brands. I will try to be unbiased! This leave-in spray conditioner smells great and provides a ton of moisture to hair that is dry, especially after trips to the pool or ocean. I have really thick hair and thought it worked beautifully as a detangler.

Birchbox Hair Scrunchie

I am glad that scrunchies are having a moment. I remember collecting so many of them when I was in middle school! I wish I could brag about this one, and in the photos is does look cute, especially with the little tails. Sadly, the fabric feels really inexpensive and the whole thing was just not made well. I feel like in order for me to really rock a scrunchie, it needs to be at least a little luxe.

Birchbox Mini Brush

Cute! This mini brush was a nice addition to this box, especially since all of my brushes are massive paddle ones that don't travel well. I am one of those girls who wet brushes her hair in the shower even though I know you aren't supposed to. It is just too convenient to not do it when I have conditioner on my strands! This brush did a great job of brushing my thick hair, despite its demure size.

(MALIN+GOETZ) Eucalyptus Deodorant, 1 oz. - Estimated Value $8.46 (Buy 2.6 oz for $22.00)

I was faithfully using natural deodorant until I started getting chemical burns from the baking soda. I have found that the natural options without baking soda just don't work for me, and this was no exception. The strong medicinal eucalyptus fragrance was no match for my sweat and, well, aroma.

Merci Handy Hand Sanitizer in 'Hello Sunshine', 1 fl oz - Retail Value $3.50

We all know that planes are gross, and I can't tell you how often I wish I had hand sanitizer when I am stuck up there in the sky with everyone else's germs. This little bottle is really cute and the gel smells like citrus and a beach vacation. Share some with your aisle neighbor. They will appreciate it!

Marvis Whitening Toothpaste, 10 ml - Estimated Value $1.80 (Buy a full-size 75 ml for $13.50)

I have tried this toothpaste before and while I liked it, I have super crappy teeth that really need fluoride to keep the enamel strong. Aside from that, I did like this paste and found it super minty and refreshing. The vintage-inspired tube also looks a lot more chic in your toiletry kit!

Marvis Mouthwash Concentrate, 30 ml - Estimated Value $5.63 (Buy a full-size 120 ml for $22.50)

This is the most genius item in the pack. I have never taken mouthwash on a plane, but I am sure we can all identify with funk-mouth, especially on long flights. Add to that the fact that you are sitting so close to your seat neighbor and things can get awkward. This mouthwash was so minty and powerful! Since this is technically a concentrate, you are meant to dilute it with water, but when on the go this might not be as practical. I just used a little bit without adding any water and found it still got the job done!

Love of Color Glow Squad Quad, 0.28 oz -  Full Size! Retail Value $20.00

I am not generally a fan of all liquid palettes but this one gave me pause. The three highlighters are beautiful, and have a really lovely texture. I like to use creamy highlighters on my lids as a quick sheer eyeshadow effect and I found that the shade in the upper right corner was dreamy for this purpose. It gave my lids just enough to look like I cared! I also liked the reddish shade on my lips. I am sure you could also use it as a cream blush, but I didn't like it so much on my cheeks. I felt like it settled into my pores in a not-so-cute way. The lighter highlighters are perfect for the tip of your nose, cheekbones, or anywhere else you like to illuminate. This little quid absolutely made my skin look more radiant and awake with minimal effort.

All were sheer, natural, and very blendable!

ColourPop Bellini BB Lippy Balm, 0.35 oz - Full Size! Retail Value $6.00

Phew! Our last item is a juicy balm with faint peach notes. It is a really thick, heavy formula, but because of this is clings to my lips and gives them a natural glossiness. I do wish the peach scent was stronger though.

Verdict: Well, that was an impressive selection of flight-approved goodies. It would be hard to not feel pampered if you managed to use most of these items while in flight. Who doesn't want to arrive at their destination and look refreshed, hydrated, and pampered? Since everything is TSA-approved in terms of size, this is the perfect kit to snag before your upcoming journey. Even if you don't have plans to be up in the air, any of these items would be super handy to have around on a road trip or even just tucked away in your desk at work. With a value of around $119.30 (not including the brush, bag, or scrunchie, since I could not find retail values) this kit seems worth the $45 price tag, especially if you can just skip that stressful small size toiletry shopping before a big vacation.

I love natural/vegan beauty products, Korean skincare, unique jewelry, and weird candies from far away places. When I am not waiting for my next exciting box you can find me painting or taking photographs of interesting people. I never leave home without pug hair somewhere on my shirt and a bold lipstick on my smile.

Got this set. Really like that lip gloss and shampoo and conditioner. Also I just took a trip and used that mini brush and hair scrunchie as well as toothpaste and mouthwash. Deodorant not that great. Haven’t used anything else yet, but overall I feel like this is good value

I think you’d really like R+Co’s cactus shampoo…

I really like that brand so I will have to add it to my wish list! I tend to cycle between Davines, OUAI, and R+Co for the majority of my hair products. Three really awesome brands!

This is so cute, with so many useful products. I would pay 45.00 if I needed the products. 25.00 if I just wanted it.
I have so much stuff I can make my own kit. I just took tons to the battered woman shelter and still have over 500 items. I am seriously overloaded!

Heidi

Hi Megan, I have a friend who has the same deodorant issues as you. She recently found Lume and swears by it. She trying to convert everyone she knows. https://lumedeodorant.com/

I haven’t tried it yet because I’m having trouble giving up my antiperspirant. But if I ever do that, this will be the first one I try.

Thanks for the rec Heidi! I will have to give it a shot. I was using Milk & Honey which I was OBSESSED with, and I was totally fine until I tried the extra strength and it completely tossed me for a loop. They also have a baking soda free version but I am a little scared. Lume looks great!
