At the top of our box was this card from the Tiny Humans Read team introducing us to the June box. On the back, they included some activity ideas for us. Another fun thing about this company is they include some great printables for your kids on their site as well as some insight into the benefits of reading with your child.

I have to point out this Summer Bucket List printable they have this month because I thought it was so cute!

Field Guide to the Grumpasaurus by Edward Hemingway - Retail Value $16.99 (found here for $12.81)

If you have kids, it's likely you've encountered your very own Grumpasaurus before! This was a fun book with a "field note" style that describes the terrifying Grumpasaurus who gets a bit upset when their toys get broken and may lash out at those around them. Sometimes so loud that those around them can hear them "grump." This was a fun story for parents about when a child is upset and how out of character they can act before they calm down. It's playful and relatable and I could see using this as a way to talk to your kids about anger and appropriate ways to express it!

Be Who You Are by Todd Parr- Retail Value $17.99 (found here for $8.95)

The former art teacher in me wants to develop an art project around this book so much because it's that perfect classroom book that can reach multiple kids and encourage them to be themselves! This book features colorful pages and a really basic illustration style that I love as it reminds kids to be themselves whether they are young, old, a different color, silly, or energetic. This book looks at differences at a very simple level and is full of positive messages about being confident and being their best.

What If... by Anthony Browne - Retail Value $16.99 (found here for $12.54)

This book was odd and while the concept should have been great, I wasn't a fan of what was depicted in the illustrations (although beautifully done), nor did I like how dismissive the mother seemed. Joe has lost the invitation to the party he is attending so he and his mother wander down the street looking in the windows of each home to see if it is the correct house. As they walk, Joe is filled with angst over what the party will be like and his mother just sort of dismisses his fears, as I'm sure I've done as a mother before, but I feel like in a book they should take the opportunity to offer a different, more thoughtful response from the mother. As for the illustrations, it seemed like there were some hidden or surprising images within them and there was one scene where men were blindfolded, shoving others into boxes and riding on each other's backs with snakes crawling all over the ground. It felt very odd and somewhat off-putting and there was no clear explanation of what was happening. Overall, this book was a big miss for us.

Verdict: The first two books we received from Tiny Humans Read were great. Grumpasaurus is our favorite of the bunch and I like the positive message of Be Who You Are but unfortunately, What If... was not one that I see us keeping. Overall, I was still happy with our box, and judging by the mixed reviews for the last book, there may be others who enjoy it more than we did. I do think the books were unique and the total retail value came to $51.97 ($34.30 with sale prices) which is great for a $24.99/month (plus free shipping) box!
