Sweet Sparkle June 2019 Review

Each month Sweet Sparkle includes an info card with an intro to the theme, products sampled, and their retail values. This month’s theme is “Glow for It” featuring 5 makeup products and a bonus item.

Starlooks Lengthening Mascara, FULL SIZE! - Retail Value $17

Mascaras are always exciting for me to get in subscription boxes; I love to try them all, as I'm always on the hunt for bigger, and bolder lashes! Lashes are my favorite part of makeup, yet they are the most frustrating step. This formula is a sticky one. I applied one layer and attempted to apply a second coat, but my lashes just ended up a tangled mess. I combed them out the best I could, but I couldn't manage to separate them the way I like. I didn't have any problems with flaking or running throughout the day, but as far as volumizing and lengthening goes, this formula doesn't hold a candle to some of my favorite go-to's.

Peripera Peri's Ink the Velvet No. 6 in Celeb Deep Rose - Listed Value $7

This liquid lip dries matte and has a blurring, velvety texture. It felt great on my lips, unlike most stains or liquid lipsticks, and I really love the color that was sampled. You could deepen this up to be a vampy red or wear it (as I did below) as a soft rosy stain. The color lasted on my lips for a few hours without feeling dry or uncomfortable, a total win for my picky, dry lips!

Chella Dual Blending Brush & Spoolie - Retail Value $18

Typically I get really excited when I see a beauty tool in one of my boxes, but this brush just doesn't do it for me. I'm not sure what Chella had in mind when the brand came up with this one, but why put a spoolie on the end of a blending brush? It just seems like a random pairing to me!  The head of this brush is thin and flat, so I wouldn't use it for blending, but it is generally good to use for packing on color.

J. Cat Beauty Aura Glow Liquid Highlighter in White Goddess - Retail Value $8.99

If you're looking for a frosty white glow, look no further! It is easy to go ham with glow drops, especially this thick version. I used these (very sparingly!) on my cheekbones, patting them on using just my fingertip for a sheer highlight, and they seemed to blend into my skin without revealing too much texture. These would be awesome to mix with body lotion for an all-over shimmer look, too, and I think the concentrated nature of this formula will make this bottle last forever.

Swatches of the makeup (left to right): J. Cat Liquid Highlighter in White Goddess drops unblended then blended, Peri's Ink in No. 6 Deep Rose unblended then blended

Cosmakery Ethereal 9 Shadow Palette - Retail Value $68

We are going back to the basics with this very neutral palette. There is a nice mixture of mattes and shimmers in this one, ranging from sheer golds to dark browns.

Here are swatches of the palette left to right. Each shadow applied sheerly and caused a little hassle to build up any deep colors. Although I have no complaints about the wear of these shadows, I can't see this palette being worth over $60. The packaging alone screams drugstore to me, and the colors were really nothing to get excited about, and for $68, I want some excitement!

Oh K! Bubble Sheet Mask - Retail Value $3

Sheet masks are fun to use, but bubbling sheet masks are double the fun! I love a good exfoliating treatment, but I'm often wary to try new exfoliating products due to my sensitive skin. I cut the mask time in half, so I wore this bubbler for 5 minutes, and even that seemed to do the trick. When you apply this mask, it instantly goes to work and you can feel a slight tingle as the bubbles gently exfoliate and purify the skin.  I haven't noticed any reactive breakouts since using this two days ago, and my skin felt clean and refreshed after I rinsed the remaining product off.

Here is the look I came up with using all of the products from this month’s box. I applied a sheer wash of color to my lids and lips using the products from this month, and I also applied the J. Cat glow drops to my cheekbones.

Verdict: Sweet Sparkle sent a very user-friendly box this month. We went back to the basics for June with samples like a basic shadow palette, a liquid lip, and black mascara. This month’s retail value came to about $118.99 (excluding the mask, which was listed as a bonus item); that is a good value for this box, even though the most expensive item seemed to have a very inflated retail price.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? No. Your first box will be the current month’s box. So if you sign up in the month of July, you will get the July box, etc.

I’m a self-proclaimed “cool mom” who loves a little, who am I kidding, a lot of razzle-dazzle. I have been box-obsessed for over 10 years, and I am always on the hunt for new beauty, fun flair and trendy clothing boxes. A fun night for me includes an exfoliating foot mask and a bag of Dot's Pretzels while binging Rupaul’s Drag Race.

Wow is that the most boring eyeshadow palette ever. I prefer eyeshadow palettes that mix neutrals with a couple colorful accent it two. The rest of the box looks great.

I think the flat end of that spoiler brush is to highlight the brow underneath or using concealer it is still a weird pairing though isn’t it?

Hi Abby, great review. I would like to know how to apply sheer wash bright/dark color lip products… do you use brushes, etc? I would appreciate the tip! Thanks.

Hi Luna! Recently I’ve been loving Benefit’s Bad Gal Bang, but my favorite drugstore pick is Essence Lash Princess False Lash Effect Mascara — it is awesome if you love volume and length, and it is much easier to remove than Benefit’s mascaras (and you can’t beat the $5 price tag!). How about you?

I love Benefit’s Bad Gal Bang mascara too! I haven’t tried any of Essence’s mascaras, but I do have a few of them (a friend of mine gifted me a bundle of them. yay!), and I’ve only heard great things about them, so I’ll keep the one you mentioned in mind to try first out of the bunch. 🙂
Gosh, I already feel so overwhelmed trying to think of the ones I’ve loved that my mind is going blank! lol! I know I’m missing some, but off the top of my head I love Benefit’s Roller Lash (curls my lashes like no other), Urban Decay’s Perversion (I think I’m the only person on the planet that loves this mascara. lol), and Clinique’s High Impact Mascara. There was one from a k-beauty brand I loved too, but I can’t remember the brand. 🙁 I can’t really think of any indie brands I’ve tried recently, but I did try my first mascara from a green beauty brand this year (Hynt Beauty), and I was bummed that it lived up to the hype of natural mascaras not performing well. I had to put some major elbow grease to build that baby up, but once I had built it up my lashes actually looked pretty nice. I’m not ready to write off mascaras from green beauty brands yet though. 🙂
Do you use lash primers as well? I do, since they’ve always worked for me at protecting my lashes and enhancing my mascara, and my most favorite one is L’Oréal’s Voluminous Lash Primer (I think it’s called). It’s a perfect dupe for Clinique’s Lash Building Primer which I used religiously for years until I sampled L’Oréal’s primer. The worst one I tried was Urban Decay’s Perversion Primer. It was sooooo clumpy, and just not good.

I really love Roller Lash, too! It Cosmetics Superhero Mascara is usually great, but the last sample I had was a little dried out. It’s funny, I really love mascara samples, but I tend to not be impressed with the full-sized versions very often?! How weird is that!
I love the Lancome lash primer, but Tarte’s is also a dear favorite. You can usually find these on sale for $10 a few times a year (gotta love Ulta’s 21 days of beauty sales!), so I stock up on them. I find that eyelash curlers make a huge difference, too! I just had to replace my Shiseido, which has been my go-to. Any preference there? I’m always open to trying the next best thing 🙂

Luna

I love trying out new mascaras too Abby! I actually will never get tired of receiving them in my sub boxes. 😀 What have been some of your favorites? I always love to hear if there is a new-to-me mascara I just HAVE to try. 😉
