Sunday Riley Summer 2019 Review

Sunday Shares
5 overall rating
10 Ratings | 0 Reviews

Sunday Riley recently started a quarterly lifestyle subscription box curated by the editors of their blog, The Sunday Edit. In addition to great beauty and lifestyle items by popular brands, they always include a few Sunday Riley products and this time there are three with one being FULL SIZE. Squeeee! Since we just received the last box in May, it was a surprise to get another so soon. We reached out to customer service and they told us that it ships every 2-3 months, but they "slightly compressed the schedule this year so that folks who received their first box in late February could still get to experience a full year of boxes." They should have a more definitive schedule for 2020, so stay tuned.

This box was sent to us at no cost for review. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes.)

Sunday Riley Summer 2019 Box Review

Tidal Brightening Enzyme Water Cream, 1.7 oz. - Retail Value $65.00

We received a sample size of Sunday Riley's Tidal in the last box, but this time they've decided to include a full-size version. I was a big fan of it when I tried it, so I'm super happy to receive this one which should last quite a long time! Water creams are so moisturizing and light, and this one is no different with its dreamy formula that makes my skin feel like it was just born. I can also appreciate that it comes with a little scoop to get a nice size dollop out of the tub without getting it trapped under my nails. The value for this one immediately covers most of the cost of the box alone!

The two minis come in a super cute resealable bubble pouch similar to the blue one from the Love Edition box.

Yellow Sunday Riley pouch, upright

Sunday Riley Yellow Heart Bubble Pouch

The 4.25-inch pouch is on the smaller side but perfect for traveling with jewelry or other items that need a little protection.

Good Genes All-In-One Lactic Acid Treatment, 5 ml - Estimated Retail Value $17.50 (Buy a 30 ml bottle for $105.00)

I was surprised to see Good Genes in the box again since they included a deluxe sample version last time, but I don't mind a little more. This treatment has a nice lemongrass scent and can be spread onto the skin after cleansing and toning but before any heavier serums or oils. I noticed that it feels sort of firming as soon as I put it on which is kinda nice. I can toss this one into a travel bag since I have a larger size at home.

Sunday Riley A+ High-Dose Retinoid Serum, 5 ml - Estimated Retail Value $14.17 (Buy 30 ml for $85.00)

This is the first time I've tried their pale yellow retinoid serum and am impressed at how moisturizing it feels when applying. It also quickly absorbs without feeling heavy and has almost no scent at all. Only time will tell if this retinol-alternative with help reduce any lines or wrinkles on my face, but the ritual is a pleasant one.

Lena Bernard Delfina Cuff Bracelet in Green Aventurine - Estimated Retail Value $78.00 (Similar here for $54.95)

I think this is the first time we've seen jewelry in the box and they've chosen a great piece by Lena Bernard which can be found at places like Anthropologie. While this isn't exactly my style, it's a really well-crafted cuff made of brass and green aventurine which speaks to my love of gemstones and crystals. The cuff is soft enough to bend so you can get the right fit on any wrist and the stone is a beautiful large specimen. Talk about a statement piece!

Real Techniques Everyday Essentials Brush Set - Retail Value $19.99 (Found here for $14.99)

There was a period of time where I was overrun by makeup brushes, but I gave a lot away to my friends and now am left with just a few. I go back and forth about wanting to use one brush for several things, using just my fingertips, or having specific brushes for every need. The set included in this box has four brushes they deem "essential" as well as complexion sponge. The brushes all are incredibly soft and bushy and I really enjoy the matte metallic handles on each in pink, red, and purple. I've been using the blush brush the most frequently with setting powder to finish my makeup and the deluxe crease for my eyeshadow. I also appreciate the flat side of the sponge to cover more surface with each swipe. Great set for those starting a brush collection!

TAN-LUXE The Body Illuminating Self-Tan Drops in Light/Medium, 1.69 oz. - Retail Value $59.00

These drops are the second self-tanning item I've gotten this summer so I felt a little more equipped to try them out. There are two colors available and I received the light/medium for my pale skin. The presentation is wonderful and I didn't have to use much to coat both of my legs from my thighs all the way to my feet. The directions suggest adding 2-6 drops (depending on the color you want to achieve) to your favorite moisturizer before slathering on. I started with just two drops per dollop of Aveeno lotion (my go-to) and although it was an alarming difference, the next day I could tell my legs looked a bit more sun-kissed. Feeling even more confident, I think I might graduate to four drops since I was beginning to like the way my skin looked being a little less pasty.

R+Co FOIL Frizz + Static Control Spray, 5 oz. - Retail Value $29.00

I'm ridiculously impressed with this control spray! It says it helps with static, which it most certainly does, as well as flyaways, which I am kind of on the fence about. It overall calms down any frizziness I may be experiencing but I still have some baby flyaways that this doesn't necessarily fix. However, this makes my hair so smooth and untangled. It works perfectly hand-in-hand with another R+Co product I fell in love with that I got in this month's Birchbox. I'm excited to have a full-size bottle of this so I won't have to order it again for a while.

COOLA Mineral Liplux SPF 30 Organic Tinted Lip Balm in Skinny Dip - Retail Value $18.00

With summer comes the sun and all the damaging rays it bestows upon us. COOLA is a beloved sunscreen brand in subscription boxes but this lip balm is a new product to me. The metal twist-off-top tube reminds me of Fresh Sugar lip balms, and the particular one I got comes in "Skinny Dip" which looks to be a peachy nude. It's a bit heavy on the ol' smackers but delivers a hefty 30 SPF to make sure the delicate skin doesn't get harmed while being out and about in various farmers markets, art festivals, and pool trips.

Say You Still Love Me by K.A. Tucker - Retail Value $17.00 (Found here for $11.90)

Not a huge reader, here and find it tough to get into fiction especially, but if the book is chosen for me and put into my hands, there is a better chance of me cracking it open. It also appears that this paperback is not even out yet, so Sunday Riley got some early access to it. There are no reviews on Amazon for me to browse, but the back of the book lets me know that K.A. Tucker is a "master of steamy romance" so that gives me an inkling as to what I'm getting into. A romance novel sounds like a great beach read which makes sense in this summer box and this one follows a woman in her late 20's who is a VP at her father's fancy real estate development firm that reconnects with an old flame who happens to be her first love (and apparently broke her heart). Since he comes from the "wrong side of the tracks" this sounds to be a classic Cinderella story, but I have a feeling there are some twists and perhaps some racy descriptions. One can only hope.

Boy Smells Kush Votive Candle, 3 oz. - Retail Value $16.00

I've been seeing Boy Smells candles in local shops and am always tempted by their cute packaging and alluring scents. Here, they've included a mini 3-ounce version of their candle in "Kush" which is very unique and a little hard to describe. The listed notes are cannabis, suede, white musk, tulip, and amber which gives me a sweet yet warm vibe. Once burning, the fragrance is subtle and delicate which is exactly what I like in a candle. Although I may not have chosen this scent myself, I'm pleased with it.

W&P Italian Spritz Carry On Cocktail Kit - Retail Value $24.00

I try to get out of Pittsburgh as much as possible to check out other cities so this little plane-friendly cocktail kit is a neat item to try. Inside the red tin, you'll find almost everything you need (minus the alcohol, ice, and orange round) to make yourself an Italian Spritz while zooming through the clouds. In addition to the Italian Spritz syrup and recipe card, they've supplied a metal jigger to measure, a metal spoon to stir, and even a linen coaster with a cool little airplane icon on it. This can be reused for another trip by supplying yourself with another delightful syrup to make the cocktail of your desire! I'm not a Prosecco fan which is what this cocktail calls for, but I'm eager to try this out on something gin or vodka-based, perhaps!

Verdict: Sunday Riley has consistently delivered an awesome box full of great brands that are curated perfectly for the theme or season. Outstanding beauty products, brands I already love, and items I've been wanting to check out make this my favorite quarterly box. The value is also always a powerhouse since just two items more than pay for the cost and all 11 total up to a retail value of a whopping $357.66!!

Are we one month away from the fall box with no spoilers? Has anyone heard anything in a special email that maybe I did not get? I know it’s a total reach, but I’m so curious and have no patience!

Reply ButtonReply

Victoria

On Instagram they said the box “will be live October 24,” so I’m hoping that’s when the reveal will be up on their site! Really wish they’d get a schedule together.

Reply ButtonReply

Lynda

I have heard nothing. My account does say that my next charge date will be Thursday, October 24. One subscriber commented below that she was told the theme would be “Sleep”. I wish there were spoilers (what if I don’t want it?) but I have been imagining things that would fit the theme.

Victoria

I’m dying to know when the next box is supposed to come out. I wish they’d get a schedule together. I emailed them a few weeks ago asking for a timeframe and they said they couldn’t give me one, but I’m not going to check my bank account every day wondering if I had $85 withdrawn. I hope spoilers or news about it comes out soon!

Reply ButtonReply

Kate

I saw on Instagram they commented on a post that the fall box will be live October 24th!

Reply ButtonReply

Victoria

Oooh yay! Patience is not my thing when it comes to sub boxes 😂

Lynda

My next order date recently changed from October 7 to October 23.

Marie

I want to know, too! I suspect that they wanted to prioritize the launch of their new ceramide cream, and I just saw on their Instagram that they are releasing a special vault collection gift set with Ipsy, so maybe they are timing it after these launches? I check their site way too often to see if there’s a sub box update lol.

Reply ButtonReply

Victoria

Saaame, I’m checking their site and the MSA constantly, haha. I didn’t even think about their upcoming launch, good point!

Lynda

Just got an e-mail saying my box will ship in the next 3-5 days! I guess there will be no spoilers this month! Kind of exciting!

Reply ButtonReply

D

I emailed them after seeing your comment and they said they start shipping on the 24th. Do subscribers get their boxes at different times? (Like in waves, like Causebox does)

Reply ButtonReply

Kristin

My account says that my next billing date is not until November 7th. They don’t seem to really have a schedule figured out yet.

Lynda

I don’t know. All I know is that my next billing date has shown as October 7 since July. And here is the email I got on Friday:

Good news! Your Sunday Riley order is coming soon!

Hi Lynda Xxxxxxxx,

Your order is scheduled to ship in the next 3 – 5 days.

You may manage your subscription by clicking here:
Manage Subscription

Please email us at [email protected] if you have any questions, we will be happy to help!

However, I checked my account today and it now says my next order date is October 23. I have not emailed them but I do plan to.

Did they give you any idea of what was in it?

Jen

I hope the next box has a full size of the new Sunday Riley ICE Ceramide Moisturizing Cream in it.

When will we get spoilers for the next box?

Reply ButtonReply

Lisa

I hope so too!!

Reply ButtonReply

Marie

When will we have fall box spoilers?! I check the SR site every day lol!

Anyone know when we will get spoilers?! Check my account says next bill date is this Saturday 9/7?!

Reply ButtonReply

Lynda

Prior to the summer box my account also said my next billing date was Sept 7. I got a box in March and one in May. Then I got an e-mail asking what shade of drops I wanted for the Summer Box on July 9, I was confused so contacted them. They said it was for the summer box shipping July 9. Sure enough, they billed me on that day and shipped my box. My account now says next billing/ship date is Oct 7 which makes sense for a quarterly box. Jan-Apr-Jul-Oct. I think for me they were playing catch-up since I signed up in March.

Reply ButtonReply

Kate

Thanks so much for responding. I also got the two prior boxes before the summer box. I think they were called the love and travel boxes and I loved both of them. When I saw spoilers for the summer box I decided to cancel to skip it. I went back on about a month ago and I resubscribed thinking it would get me the fall box. I basically just resubscribed for the summer box but I just went back on and cancelled again! I’m waiting for next box spoilers!

D

I ordered one last week, this is my first Sunday Riley box and I LOVE it! I’ve been wanting to try this box for awhile now and didn’t because of the price but after dumping FFF and Causebox summer I persuaded myself lol. Glad I did.

Any idea when the fall box comes out? July seemed kind of late for a summer box so just wondering if fall doesn’t come out until end of September or October?

Reply ButtonReply

Lynda

If you read above, it does talk about this year’s schedule being a little off. If I look at my account, it says that my next shipment will be early October. Which makes sense for a quarterly box. But before the summer box, my account had said September but I got it in July. I received a box in March (my first), May and July. This is a new subscription box so I think they are still settling on a schedule.

Glad liked your first box. I’ve been loving mine!

Reply ButtonReply

Marie

Lynda, thank you for commenting with this info! I am so eager to see what will be in the fall box. I think I will subscribe to this. After thinking about it for a while and looking back at the last few boxes, I think SR is doing an awesome job with this sub! Really great/thoughtful curation.

D

Thanks so much for the info Lynda! I wouldn’t be bummed to get one in September lol. So here’s hoping.

Prue

I think it looks like a good box. But I can’t buy any products from a company who wants their employees to write fake reviews. Touting benefits that they know don’t exist. Deceit like that wouldn’t be needed if they had a great product they stood by. I also I used their products before this. I never noticed a difference.

Reply ButtonReply

Michelle

They admitted it and the person who started it was fired. I think every one deserves a second chance. Honestly, their products are genuinely good though, so who cares in the long run? If their products sucked and you spent $100 based on fake reviews, yeah I get it. But they don’t. They’re amazing so why does it make if you purchased it off a fake review or not? They make damn good products.

Reply ButtonReply

Tara

Well their is my answer right there. I don’t think they make good products. I do hear what you’re saying and it’s just my opinion, doesn’t mean I’m right but I don’t think they’re products work. You can’t tell me that some low level person in the company put out an email like this. No, this company knew what was going on. They all blame “someone who has now been fired”. I don’t like liars and I don’t and have never seen a difference in their product. I used my serum everyday after this came out to see if I should continue or stop. I stopped. They can write all the reviews they want. Product did nothing. Don’t like liars.

Lynda

How do you know this is happening?

Reply ButtonReply

Prue

An internal memo/email was leaked. They had been asking employees to write reviews. Saying things like “and it really helped my acne” I just don’t like liars.

Lynda

How do you know this is happening?

Cute cuff… I received two of the Coola Skinny Dip from Beautyfix… and I have lots of the Good Gene’s and A product. I just wish someone would buy the 40 auctions I have listed on ebay with all my surplus. Easy pass on this one. But I really like the bracelet….lol.

Reply ButtonReply

Sav

Does anyone know of any other discounts, greater than 10%?

Reply ButtonReply

Lori

I REALLY wish there was the chance to buy past boxes or products from previous boxes, but I think these have all sold out, so 🙁 One can hope!

Reply ButtonReply

Elizabeth

It looks like the Love and Wellness boxes are currently available in the “Shop” on their website!

Reply ButtonReply

Lori

No way! I looked and didn’t see them–THANK YOU 🙂

Jodie

Great box. Would’ve gotten if I hadn’t just bought a full size Tidal.

Reply ButtonReply

ngeon

Has anyone tried the auto-payment option of $85 per box? I’m super curious about this sub, but wonder if it’s difficult to cancel…

Reply ButtonReply

Jean

I subbed for the Travel Box and the Summer Box was my first auto-shipped box. So far I feel like it’s worth it! I was sort of iffy about the Summer Box until I received it and now I’m very glad I didn’t cancel. I love the cuff and the Tidal and the tanning drops are a surprise win for my deathly pale legs. I’m looking forward to the book, though I’ve been too busy to get into it. Looks like a quick read though. The only thing I won’t use any time soon is the in flight cocktail kit, but I can either gift it or save it for my next transcontinental flight…

Reply ButtonReply

Elizabeth

It looks like it’s pretty simple to cancel. There’s a section for subscriptions under “my account” and it looks like it’s just a couple of steps (select a reason, leave comments if wanted, then click cancel). It says I won’t be charged until Nov 9, so I’m not going through with a cancellation right now since I want to wait on spoilers for the next box 🙂

This box is the best I’ve seen in a long time. If I were to subscribe to only one box Sunday Riley would be the one. Incredible value!

Reply ButtonReply

Chris

That is what I did, I dropped everything except for this one. Great box with high quality items that I would not necessarily buy for myself but am very happy to have. Also it is a great feeling to be down to 1 box 🙂

Reply ButtonReply

Jenn

This box wasn’t for me (wouldn’t use the tanning oil or cocktail set and the bracelet isn’t my style) but I bought the last two and loved them. Their cs is really great and very professional too. My first box was unfortunately stolen 🙁 (ON Valentine’s Day! 💔) and they sent me a replacement.

One thing to note – they ship via Fed Ex so you might want to check and see if you have an alternate place for the box to be delivered to (like Walgreens). I don’t have things stolen often, but I’ve found it happens more often with Fed Ex and UPS since the trucks are more noticeable/easy to follow AND the drivers make no effort in my are to “hide” the package – always leave directly in front of the door in plain sight.

Reply ButtonReply

Anna

If you sign up for Fedex delivery manager & ups my choice you can have them leave your packages in an alternate location. They can also hold for pickup or deliver to a neighbor. I’ve never had packages stolen here but I have had them delivered to the wrong address.

I’d buy a Nest or Ring camera out if packages were disappearing. The videos can also be shared with neighbors making it easier to pinpoint problems.

MissJ

I love this box. I almost didn’t buy it, but so glad that I did. I’ve gotten the last 3 boxes and will continue to keep getting them. The value is there and it’s a great mix of items. So much better than some other quarterly boxes I’ve been getting.

Reply ButtonReply

Melissabee

I immediately subbed, and then started kicking myself for not doing so sooner. The book is not my fav, but it is like a little bonus surrounded by amazing skin care that I would totally buy anyway. I’m super pumped!

Reply ButtonReply

Kc

What an odd curation. Skin care, book, fashion jewelry, cocktail on the go- not sure who the audience is .

Reply ButtonReply

Becca

The curation reminded me of a tropical getaway- the airplane cocktail, beach read, summery cuff bracelet I could see with a beachy flowy dress, and super light water cream.

Reply ButtonReply

Becca

This is my favorite ever box. I haven’t bought this one yet but the fomo is growing by the day. I think the curation is just the best. And I like the mix of really high end (Harry Josh) and indie brands (wanderlust, krea funk)

Reply ButtonReply

Rose

I hate getting books that I don’t want, and I utterly hate the cocktail set (honestly…why?), but overall I am very happy with the other items in this box.

Reply ButtonReply

Tara

The worst four words in the universe: “ships to: U.S. only” ! I love this box, hopefully they’ll expand to Canada.

Reply ButtonReply

Tracy

I bet they will if it continues to be a success and I think that’s likely. It’s definitely a more expensive box, but it’s worth it almost immediately with a full-size SR product included + even more quality items. I have really enjoyed both boxes I purchased.

Fingers crossed for you! 🤞🏼

Reply ButtonReply

Kelly

I loved the last two boxes but skipped this one. The only thing I was really excited about were the tan drops. Can’t wait to see what the next box has in store!

Reply ButtonReply

Elizabeth

I was hesitant to sub since it’s a bit more expensive than the other ones I’ve tried but it’s really worth it. I’ve loved the love, travel, and now this box. It’s not necessarily things I’d choose for myself (I don’t wear much jewelry or read “beach reads”), but I’m really excited to branch out. This is what I wanted when I got into FabFitFun and the quality seems so much better!

Reply ButtonReply

Tracy

You are so right about the quality with SR vs. FFF, which makes me sad to say because they introduced me to some good brands I wouldn’t have found otherwise (Farmacy, Grown Alchemist, KarynG, etc). Unfortunately, I feel like it’s gone downhill and I’m tired of the hassle. My last box was Summer ‘19.

The two boxes I ordered from SR so far (Fall 2018 + the Valentine’s Day box — skipping this one) arrived in two days. Compared to FFF sending me a Spring Editor’s Box 3 months after I ordered, it’s is a no-brainer to switch.

Reply ButtonReply

Christy

I can’t believe how many great items are in this box. It’s so nicely curated. I don’t really need the contents so I’m okay that I didn’t buy it – but everything is so nice!

Reply ButtonReply

Lori

This is an EXCELLENT sub though this month didn’t appeal to me, so I skipped. I’m super excited to see what the next box holds. I happen to LOVE SR products, so the fact that they have such incredibly curated boxes is such a dream! Even though it’s pricy, it’s definitely worth cancelling a couple other subs for.

bunnygirlbrem

I totally agree!

This was a nice box and the Tan Luxe drops are a surprise stand out too.
