Nosejoy July 2019 "Ocean Breeze" Review

Nosejoy usually sends a welcome card with a note from the sub's curator and an info slip that gives a little description of each item in your box. Emily's honesty about her fondness for beach-related activities that aren't actually sitting on the beach made me smile. I can kind of relate! I do like to sit in the sand and jump in the waves, but only in small doses and only if there is an umbrella shading me for most of the time. It's refreshing to be able to be honest about these things, haha!

Old Whaling Company Seaweed & Sea Salt Bath Bomb, 8 oz — Retail Value $6

This subscription often features products from a rotation of small businesses that Nosejoy subscribers will come to be familiar with. It's kind of nice to see the themes pop up, as you will with later products this month, but it's equally as delightful when new-to-me companies are featured. Old Whaling Company (great name, right?) is one such example. As a copywriter, I took great joy in the snappy, lighthearted wording of information on the packaging.

In other news, how gigantic is this bath bomb? I'll definitely be cutting it in half—or maybe even quarters—so that it lasts longer. I have always found ocean-themed scents really elusive when it comes to describing them, but I'll do my best for the items in this box. This bath bomb touts a "seaweed + sea salt scent," and I agree that it truly is beachy to the nose, but perhaps more so in the sense that it smells like the awesome products you'd find at a shoreline spa or nice hotel than smelling like actual seaweed. I love that it's color-free and is touched with sea clay on the poles.

Old Whaling Company Coastal Calm Roll-On Perfume, 0.33 fl oz — Retail Value $12

Here's another product from that same Charleston, SC company, again boasting really amazing copy on the packaging. Roll-on perfumes are great for traveling as there's less of a chance of a leak.

The scent here is "coastal calm," which is an appropriately vague name for a sea-themed product, haha. It's made with sunflower oil, organic calendula oil, and "fragrance," but it doesn't say on the packaging nor the website what the fragrance is. It has a faintly floral smell, combined with the sort of general "fresh," powder-like aroma that is often used in ocean-themed candles and deodorants and things. It's nice!

Natural Inspirations Sea Salt Citrus Body Butter, 2 oz — Retail Value $8

Here's a familiar brand from previous Nosejoy boxes. I believe we've actually received this exact same item in a different scent before. It's a nice throw-in-your-purse or toiletry bag size. It's not as thick as some body butter is, but it's really smooth and rubs in nicely. The scent is "sea salt citrus" and a subtle citrus scent is what stands out most to me. It's really lovely.

I always like seeing, and trying to internalize, the scientific names of natural ingredients and oils.

Mangiacotti Ocean Hand Sanitizer Spray, 0.5 fl oz — Retail Value $6.50

This is another new scent of a product we've received before, and as a matter of fact, I just finished my lemon-scented Mangiacotti hand sanitizer a few weeks ago! It lasted quite some time because I kept it on my desk at work and only used it if I had been visited by an office dog or snacking something kind of sticky. I like the way it leaves your hands feeling soft, unlike other hand sanitizers. My only complaint was that the label rubbed off and was barely readable by the time the bottle was empty.

Swedish Dream Sea Salt Hand Soap — Retail Value $11

I've said this before, but I love when Nosejoy provides us with home products that the whole family can use! It's also nice to have backup products like this lined up so I can plop it right on my countertop as soon as my current handsoap runs out. Something to look forward to, as silly as that might sound! This soap was "made with sea salt and natural flower extracts," and it does have quite a floral scent, but also with that hard-to-describe "fresh" smell that I mentioned above in there. Some might find it a little strong for daily use, so if that's the case for you it might be good for a guest bathroom or just to bring out on special occasions.

Verdict: I had fun exploring the sea scents of July's Nosejoy box. Even though many of the items had "sea salt" in their scent, they all had a slightly different aroma to them—but of course all with that nautical vibe. This month's five items added up to $43.50, which exceeds the box cost of $34.95. As always, I find that to be a very good value, especially since it's so well curated and saves me the hard work of finding small businesses I want to support!

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? No, your subscription will start with the August box. Sign up by the 15th to get that month's box.

I find “old ladyish” be a rather offensive description. All older women are not the same, especially nowadays. I personally aspire to be an old lady in the future.

Hi Sharon, I’m so sorry for not being more mindful in my choice of descriptor! We’ve removed that line since—you’re right—it’s not a very helpful way of communicating how the roll-on smells. Thanks for bringing that to my attention!

But when someone says “old-lady” do you not immediately go to something powdery? Older women did (and I’m sure still do, my Nan does) use power (think of shower-to-shower) to keep from getting stinky/sweaty. Since they are elderly and have a hard time getting in and out of the shower.

I personally, do not aspire to struggle to wash myself when I get older and have to resort to powder.

I’d much rather get older, even if it means struggling to get in and out of a tub or shower, than the alternative of not getting older!

Luna

Honestly, I’ve always wondered what people mean when they say that. Like what scent notes make them think that.
