Luxor Premier July 2019 Review

info sheet front

This box came with a large card detailing all of the items included:

all products and info

Looks like we are getting a ton of jewelry in here! Let's take a peek.

linen pouch

Our first item is wrapped in a linen style pouch.

Pacific Princess 18kt Gold Plated Layered Shell Disc Necklace Set – Retail Value $50.00

I had mixed feelings about these necklaces when I first opened the pouch because it seemed like a TON of gold. I was pleased when I realized they were a pair I could layer or wear solo. I especially love the shorter one with its center mother of pearl shell disk. It would actually make a super cute choker, though I can't get it tight enough. Maybe with a little modification? The longer necklace by itself is a great simple chain to give any look a little shine.

megan wearing necklaces

Here they are on, along with the gold hammered hoops coming up further along in the review!

bkr Water Bottle in Sheer Vacation Blue – Retail Value $38.00

I really could be much better about carrying a water bottle. I tend to drink a ton of carbonated water, which is likely why I haven't made it a habit. Can a sparkling girl learn to love still again? This cute bottle makes a great case for it, with its stylish silicone sleeve and heavy glass bottle. Only time will tell!

RAEN Norie Sunglasses in Sand Dune – Retail Value $135.00

I recently received a pair of sunglasses from this brand in the Summer 2019 GQ Box and they are my favorite sunglasses. Needless to say, I was pretty excited to see another pair in a very different shape and color scheme! There is something really effortless about these and the oversized shape is perfect for hiding behind when I am avoiding the sun or makeup-free. The lenses are a pretty, slightly pink-tinted shade and I always enjoy tortoise frames.

megan in sunglasses

I like the rather subtle cat-eye shape!

nest jewelry with pouch

Our final items came in a plush grey pouch.

NEST Jewelry Hammered 22k Gold Plated Adjustable Ring – Retail Value $95.00

Though this ring was described as adjustable, no matter how hard I tried I couldn't make it budge! I would guesstimate it would work best on a size 7 finger, and mine is an 8. The gold finish is so bright and shiny, and I love the hammered look!

marne wearing gold hammered ring

Marne was kind enough to model it for us with her amazing little claws!

NEST Jewelry Turquoise Bracelet - Retail Value $75.00

I am always wary of dyed howlite and other faux turquoise beads, but I did the acetone test on this one and none of that pretty blue budged! Even if this were faux, it is really pretty and I would still wear it. The gold bead really pops against the bold turquoise and though it is on the thicker side, this bracelet is still totally layerable.

bracelet on megans wrist

If I have one thought, it is that it could be a little looser. My wrist is around 6.5 inches.

NEST Jewelry Large Hammered 22k Gold Plated Hoop Earrings - Retail Value $95.00

These hoops are big! I measured them around 2.75 inches across. Though they are larger, they are featherlight and all the hammered texture catches the light beautifully. I appreciate the extra-large backers too.

Verdict: This box has a retail value of about $488 which is significantly over the $400 guaranteed value. Four of the six pieces were jewelry, which suits someone like me just fine, though if you aren't a jewelry fan, this might have been a huge miss for you. Though I can't imagine spending those NEST retail prices on each piece in a store, the quality was really good, and I appreciate the thoughtful elements added such as gold plating and the shell focal bead on the necklace set. I am already a big fan of RAEN sunglasses, so I am more than pleased to have a new pair. I also see the benefit of having such a cute water bottle around. Hopefully, I make using it a habit!

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? Yes! Your first box should be this July edition.

Value Breakdown: At $175 for this box, here’s what you are paying approximately per item:

  • Ettika Necklace Duo $17.93
  • bkr Water Bottle $13.63
  • RAEN Sunglasses $48.41
  • NEST Hoop Earrings $34.07
  • NEST Gold Ring $34.07
  • NEST Turquoise Stretch Bracelet $26.90

Alternatively, each of the 6 items has an average cost of $29.17

Just an FYI: The hammered gold jewelry in this box is a perfect match with the hammered gold jewelry offered in the latest JourneeBox. It’s probably a bit much to wear every piece together but it’s nice to have a number of coordinating pieces to choose from now.

Yesterday I actually wore the cuff from JourneeBox and the ring from this box (different hands…again, together it might be a bit much) and forgot until this morning that they actually came from different sub boxes.

I agree with all the comments. For the first box of Luxor’s revamped boxes I am really surprised that this box wasn’t fabulous. After upsetting all the grandfathered subscribers and wanting to set themselves apart as a luxe box they sure missed a great opportunity. I have not gotten my box yet or even shipping notification so maybe will feel differently seeing in person. But probably not. I will probably give the entire box to my 12 year old granddaughter. This box was pretty disappointing and did not live up to Luxor’s hype.

I would be furious if I had paid full price for this. I gave the entire box to the thrift store and even they weren’t sure they wanted it. Definitely not renewing. This was my last box.

Michelle

I live in Atherton,California for those wondering where it is. They are very picky here. Not sure about other places.

Reply ButtonReply

Mary

Thrift store or consignment shop? In our area, you simply drop off items in thrift store donation areas and no one looks through them. I’m surprised to hear that they are so particular in other parts of the country. Would definitely deter me from donating anything!

Reply ButtonReply

Michelle

Thrift store and yes they are very picky because they had a big problem with people donating stuff in bad shape.

Alexis

Why did the thrift store consider not accepting these new, higher value items? The for profit ones near me get some very nice things, but it’s all used. I wish I had a higher end donation only thrift shop near me!

Reply ButtonReply

Michelle

Because they said it was undesirable.

This is a $175 Bijoux Box!!! 😳

Michelle

Exactly! Luxor you really messed up here.

It’s an okay box as a Gilt subscriber, I don’t like big gold jewelry, so wasn’t expecting much anyways. I think the sunglass and bracelet saved it for me. Did anyone else notice that bracelet does not have the NEST link in it. Mine is plain round gold link.

Reply ButtonReply

Karen

That’s so weird. My gold link has NEST engraved on it. So weird.

And I agree – this box is pretty great for the Gilt folks who got it for forty something dollars. It’s barely ok for those grandfathered at $95. For the rest, this box is a really really tough lift.

Reply ButtonReply

Jv

They took away the grandfathered price so most of us quit instead of paying $175 for non-luxe items like a water bottle that was just included in the $25 beautyfix box.

Marcia

Way out of my price range but some lovely items. Hard to judge the quality in pictures.

I just subscribed to Journee Box at 55. and they also have a really nice cuff bracelet and matching earrings.

Reply ButtonReply

Kelly

I got this box with the Gilt deal so I paid a little over $40 for it, and I still kind of feel eh about it. I like the jewelry, but the bkr bottle just gets added to my collection, and the sunglasses in bone are not really my style. I guess for $40 it’s a good deal, but really, for a $175 box I would expect something really outstanding. The jewelry just didn’t wow me, and it felt like it was missing an item or two to me. I miss the days of the Rose et Marius tumbler, the leather purse from Ripauste, and the Halycon days bangles. The Nest jewelry is nice, but didn’t seem high end.

Reply ButtonReply

AP

Wayyy too much jewelry, and not even impressive jewelry at that. The Ettika in particular looks really cheap…not “luxe” at all. This box is really a disappointment. Luxor used to be such a great, high end box. What happened? This seems like any other mid-range box…but it’s $175, not $50 or $75!

Popsugar just released 3 spoilers for the upcoming Fall box, and IMHO, they’re higher end and better curation than what’s in this box…and their box is $75, not $175. I’m not sure who exactly Luxor is targeting anymore…but if they plan to get $175 for these quarterly boxes, they will need to seriously step it up.

Reply ButtonReply

Karen

Yep. I don’t disagree. Ettika is big in FabFitFun boxes (with an occasional appearance in Rachel Zoe or Popsugar). This box should be above it. Nest is definitely a bit higher end (Neiman’s sells it – in fact the earrings are on their website right now for $95).

Aside from being way to jewelry heavy, this box is missing that one “wow” hero item. Fingers crossed the next box is spectacular!

I’d like to ask everyone who’s been a Luxor Box customer in the past, like 3-5 years ago: Would YOU buy an Annual Subscription to this box at their price with no perks for joining for a year now?
At one time, a yearly subscription was my grail… I never could get things together to pay for it, but knew I would get really GREAT products that were hand- picked for the boxes.

Things I wouldn’t see in other boxes or already own. Things I’d consider to be so special that I’d ” ration” it.. I still have the leather- covered Rose et Marius perfume, the scent of which I LOVE, and the beautiful ReM tumblers they sold in the past. The gorgeous tile soap which is a work of art, truly.

I love my French brand ( is it 1888?) clutches in the XL size they also put in a couple of boxes, the Brandon Blackwood leather goods ( very lovely quality!)

The Halcyon Days jewelry, while not fine jewelry, is a very venerable UK brand, and I’ve loved every enameled piece they’ve sent. I bought a few on the large auction site ( not sure we can say the name) because it was the only thing I would have wanted out of the box that month, or LE box.

I do not think they should stick in a ton of over- inflated manufacturer’s price costume jewelry, because I have boxes and boxes of it from other sub boxes through the years and I do not wear it. My definition for jewelry to wear is: It is at least Sterling Silver such as Tiffany and Co. sells at reasonable prices, or 14kt. gold, not plated or dipped or frosted or dyed–Realizing that the boxes are NOT going to curate 14kt. gold jewelry with the gold market at the high we have right now.

Any gemstone will be genuine and is not lab- created, nor is it discolored or malformed ( those diamond chip stack rings and the FFF pearl ring with the weird ribs cut into the sides of the pearls were both hideous).

The things I especially have not liked in Luxor Boxes are these:
The use of Howlite in this box when Turquoise is much more affordable lately is a very cheap-out move. I live almost in the Southwest, and know the price is much more affordable this year, even with custom crafted pieces ( obviously, Nest is not a custom artisanal company. )

No more ” Passport to Beauty” or other off-brand really questionable face or body skincare items with questionable very high prices for next to nothing ( bath tea sachet, face scrub, etc). I threw away close to a dozen items because it just didn’t seem fresh or premium like the price indicated, IMO.

Also, they sent out some really nice faux fur throws one winter in a box that I don’t think was a ” LE” box, but a monthly box. I’d never had a faux fur throw before theirs, and now I have 3 more because they are so snuggly for Netflix Nights with hubby and our two fur kids.

This subscription box once was SO SPECIAL and it really could be again!!
I hate to be maudlin, but it makes me really sad to remember the really fun special boxes and curation and see what they have whittled things down to.

I miss the OG ” old” Luxor and wish they’d redefine ” Luxury” in their curation.

Reply ButtonReply

Michelle

I wouldn’t pay 10.00 for this box. No way would I pay full price.

Reply ButtonReply

Karen

After seeing this box I would definitely hold off on getting an annual sub at the new price. I’m hopeful though that the next box will be a big improvement over this one (that will be the last box for a lot of the Gilt subscribers so unless they wow everyone I’m assuming many will not renew at the new price point).

I totally agree about the great brands of yore! That $50 Mary Jurek box is still one of my favorite sub box items ever and it was so inexpensive compared to the value of so many other items we’ve received. The Rose ter Marius products became my go to, never fail, perfect for all occasion gifts for people when I was in a pinch. And I’ve been a fan of Halcyon Days long before Luxor (Scully & Scully in NYC introduced me to the brand years ago and I never left it).

That being said, I’d like to see some new brands offered under their new format. Although lots of a good thing is certainly better than lots of a bad thing, Luxor was one of the biggest offenders of repeating the same brands in their boxes again and again. Part of the reason I subscribe to subboxes is to be introduced to new brands and products (that’s certainly been the case with skincare products over the years – not the Luxor ones though…as you said, Passport to Beauty is not a widely available or widely respected brand by any means). All they have to do is go look at a bridal registry at a department store and they will see all the “luxe” homegood brands out there. I’m surprised we’ve never seen something by Alessi, for example. They offer home goods and jewelry and it’s all pretty unique. I would also much prefer to have an a couple really special items than a ton of smaller, lower value things. Rather than sending yet another single votive or an ornament in a box, surrounded by a bunch of little filler items, send something bigger, something more unusual for a sub box – a presentation bowl or a beautiful platter, a high end leather storage box for all these sunglasses we get from everyone, or a WOLF jewelry box with actual drawers (not yet another a travel jewelry box), or pretty decorative lacquer boxes…anything but the same old same old.

I was really hoping Luxor would use this revamp as an opportunity to stand out but they need to step it up. I have 2 more boxes left in my sub…I’m hoping they listen to the feedback provided here and elsewhere and knock the next one out of the park. I did not hate this box, but I know I’m in the minority and I know they can do better. Fingers crossed.

Reply ButtonReply

Lily

One thing I don’t believe ANY sub box will do is choose oversized items which do not fit into their already chosen sub box size.

To me, this is the GREATEST DRAWBACK in the subscription box world: The items curated MUST fit into the already predetermined branded boxes.

For that reason, I wouldn’t count on anything large at all from Luxor or PSMH. FFF does have larger boxes but they cram them full of lower priced items, which is not my ideal sub box model.

Beth

This is definitely not anywhere the Luxor box of the old days. Where’s Ripauste, Halcyon Days, Rose Et Marius, even a nice silver piece from Mary Jurek?? Good quality, unique brands that weren’t in every other sub box. Seriously, bkr???

Gilt screwed up my order so that I did not get the great deal that many others did. At first I was upset. But now that I see the boxes, I think they did me a favor. I’m so glad I saved my money. This box is a totally different creature.

Reply ButtonReply

Lily

You are absolutely right: This is a totally different, inferior quality group of items.

Luxor used to be SO much fun to open.. I would skip the spoilers so I’d be really surprised. The Rose et Marius perfume spray in the leather covered bottle, their enameled tumblers, the soap tiles, all SUPER quality and LUXE.

I loved every piece of Halcyon Days jewelry they ever sent except the large, unadorned watches once, and if the jewelry was the only thing I wanted in a specific box, I’d buy it from the huge auction site at a great price. Even though it’s not ” fine jewelry”, it’s high quality and Halcyon Days is worth having and keeping for a ” pop” of color and design.

The small but lovely top quality leather goods they used to curate: Brandon Blackwood, I think is the name of the 3 bags I have, and the French company that has a vintage type XL clutch in every possible color and finish.

The faux fur throws they sent in one regular box were so great and fun, as I’d never thought of buying something like that for my bed/ sofa before.. Now, I love faux fur throws of good length and they are a mainstay in my area’s mild winter climate for extra warmth when the sun’s not out.

I would be so upset with all the costume quality jewelry in this box, as it permanently oxidizes and looks so tacky soon after purchase, and anyone with long histories with Popsugar and FFF have BKR bottles. I have 5 or 6 and didn’t try to get any of them, they just came in the boxes.

The ” LUXURY” has gone. I don’t know if some investor bought the box, or if they lost their relationships with the brands they used to feature. It’s sad to me, because I’d totally buy what they did curate. ( No ” Passport To Beauty” questionable age and quality items though. I could never find a word about the company).

I really miss what they used to be and offer in the boxes.

Reply ButtonReply

Julie

Looking at the price breakdown had you paid for the box you would have paid almost the same for the sunglasses you received in the GQ box as the entire GQ box. The water bottle can be found on sale for pretty much that price in the bkr site it isnt even one of the cooler limited editions. As for the jewelry well… you can smack any price on cheap jewelry you want granted these pieces can. E found at Neiman’s Marcus so I’ll give them that but for the hundred dollar combined they expect subscribers to pay out of pocket you can buy real gemstones and silver that actually fits.

Ah shucks! Thanks, gals! Long ago, before I had acrylics, I used to have a weekly “nail nite” with some girlfriends where we’d do all sorts of fun nail art while gossiping and listening to music. Nowadays, I just go to a salon to get them painted with gel. 😉

I got this box and what a miss!
Didn’t even unpack the water bottle, already have 4 from other, much cheaper, boxes. Pass.
My Rael glasses came in a different, “bone” color, look terrible on my pale skin. Pass.
The jewelry looks very cheap, theatre style quality, nowhere near the listed RV.
Ring and bracelet are probably the nicest but they will only fit small percentage of people with tiny wrists. I can’t wear neither and have very regular sized hands and wrists. Pass
Terrible box, even though I still have it on Gilt deal. I would never ever pay full price for this.

Reply ButtonReply

Ashley

Hi Joanna, would you be interested in swapping for the other version of the sunglasses? I am really wanting the Bone color! Thanks!

Reply ButtonReply

JoannaNYC

Yes definitely!

Iggy'sRock

Hum. Does anyones else notice that this is all fake? I mean, not even real turquoise? Not even real silver? Um not even 10K gold? How do they come up with this price for faux? Maybe it is me….

Reply ButtonReply

Megan K.

I would have preferred sterling too, but I was happy the pieces were plated in gold. The turquoise I tried a few tests on to see if it was dyed howlite but those were inconclusive. I also couldn’t really find any mention of them being made of a turquoise alternative, so the jury is still out.

Reply ButtonReply

Karen

I actually liked this box. Megan was right, the ring fits a size 7 perfectly and the turquoise bracelet fits my childlike sized wrists beautifully so it will probably be a little tight for people with even average sized wrists. I also felt like the jewelry in this box was of higher quality than most of the jewelry I have received in other boxes, especially for a mixed/lifestyle box, but I think that is the issue…this box is supposed to be a mixed box not a jewelry box. I’m thinking it’s going to be a miss for a fair number of people because it is soooooooooooo jewelry heavy.

Jewelry is the quickest and cheapest way for these boxes the bump up the retail values of their boxes (ex, Cate & Chloe). If Luxor had included a house item or a different fashion accessory instead of a couple of the jewelry pieces I think people would have been much more satisfied. Whenever these boxes diversify the contents there’s always a higher chance that subscribers will like at least one item. I know a lot of people who don’t wear gold anything so this box would have been a huge miss for them.

I agree that the water bottle is an odd inclusion – it seems a bit generic (and at this point, overdone) for a luxe sub box. The recent Margot Elena water bottle was at least unique but I think people expect something more special than a water bottle from Luxor (remember that Mary Jurek box?…it had a relatively low RV but was appreciated by almost every subscriber). Luxor is charging more now so they have a larger budget to source more interesting items than this.

So, on the whole, I’m satisfied with this box, but I recognize that I could be in the minority. I’m already anxious to see spoilers for next quarter. I feel like this box could really be great if they continue to stick with high end, name brand items but just diversify the contents a bit better.

Reply ButtonReply

Julie

Bkr bottle? Now matter how you rave about it we’ve gotten them in much cheaper boxes, same for the ettika jewelry. This feels a little too fff without the choice to scale down jewelry for other options. Good deal for the gilt people but I cant imagine paying full price for this box.

Reply ButtonReply

AH

I agree. Seems very FFF-ish…and I pay $45 a quarter for that! Really doesn’t seem “luxe” at all.

Reply ButtonReply

Becca

My bid issue with this box is that all the brands are sub box Mainstays I have yet to see for full price in any regular or High end retailer. I love the look of Raen sunglasses but I can already get them through Bespoke Post or a few other boxes. The hammered jewelry looks like it would rub off after a few wears. Just.. no.

Reply ButtonReply

Connie

I was a subscriber from the first box and luckily Luxor offered the first two boxes at our grandfathered price. So far this box is a miss for me. I agree with the other comment that the jewelry does not feel luxe. Love Raen sunglasses so that is a plus and bought a pair on Anthropologie sale for a great price. I do think the water bottle seems a little odd for what they are promising with the new boxes. Hopefully the next box is better as this box was disappointing for me.

Reply ButtonReply

katie

Personally I would have been thrilled to get this box. Loving everything included.

It’s still available if you’d be thrilled with this box for 175…

Everything looks great on you, Megan but the necklace looks particularly fetching. Did you review that lipstick in another review? I love how your nails have that dot that matches your lips.

Reply ButtonReply

Thanks Zo! The Lipstick is from the LiveGlam August pack. The review should be up in the next few days. 🙂 The color is called Dancin’ for Dollaz (which is a little cringy) but the shade is awesome.

Reply ButtonReply

Carey

I think my last box was two boxes ago and glad I’m out on this one now. Not one piece of the jewelry would have fit me, lol. It seems the bracelet will only be a good fir on a few people though if you’re at 6.5 and it was a bit snug. I don’t mind costume jewelry in principle, what gets me is trying to “fancy” it up so it can have an obscene RV. The stuff from Bijoux box is on the same quality level to me and that’s only $40 a month or even the meraki box which is $60 I think you get actual sterling silver pieces that are custom to your actual size.

I’m sure some people will love the box and I’m happy you got the things you like. 🙂

Reply ButtonReply

Daria

Honestly, for the price of this box, I find the jewelry (except for the turquoise bracelet) pretty garish and cheap. That necklace looks very cheap to me, all that fake gold – yikes. This box used to have really high-quality jewelry and was a huge target of FOMO for me, what happened?

Reply ButtonReply
