Love with Food Deluxe June 2019 Box Review
New box design this month! That’s the first redesign for Love with Food I’ve seen since I got into subscription boxes maybe five years ago?
The information card isn’t super informative anymore.
There was a little product literature this month. I like the combination of a wine offer and information on a hangover remedy. There was a coupon for Bubbies mochi. I ended up with three of these coupons last year (they must’ve stuck together when someone was packing my box) but I haven’t had one for a long while.
Western’s Smokehouse Ultimate Garlic and Herb Beef Stick (1 oz) – Buy 24 for $34.98
I’ve been a vegetarian for 26 years and my husband doesn’t eat meat sticks. Normally I would drop this off on the free snacks table at work but I am changing jobs and I don’t know if there will be a free snacks table in the new office. I guess this will probably have a long shelf life due to all the salt and herbs, though.
Olyra Breakfast Biscuits in Cinnamon Tahini (1.76 oz) – Buy 6, 24 Count Boxes for $29.99
These are really quite plain but not actually bad. I didn’t remember that there was tahini in these until I looked up a link so I would write this review. The cinnamon, on the other hand, was subtle but still noticeable. They had a decent texture although I think they could be improved by dunking in coffee or hot chocolate or another beverage of your choice.
Pear’s Gourmet Everything Bagel Flavored Cashews (1 oz) – Buy 7 oz for $7.19
I like cashews and I like flavored nuts. But. These definitely contained a significant amount of caraway and it was really noticeable. I am not the biggest fan of caraway but I guess it didn’t stop me from finishing off my portion. My husband was a little iffy on these, too. (Leave out the caraway and I would probably be a lot happier with these.)
Crave-N-Rave Spikerz in El Nacho Cheese (0.9 oz) – Buy 12 Bags for $13.80 (found here for $12)
These were cute little crackers. They actually didn’t have a super cheesy flavor – I thought they tasted a lot more like cumin than anything else. That’s not necessarily a bad thing because I did like them. They have a little bit of whole grain, too. Plus, this was a new brand for me.
Earnest Eats Cran Lemon Zest (1.9 oz) – Buy 12 for $22.51 (found here for $16)
I feel like I’ve tried this brand before, but can’t exactly remember what product. I’m pretty sure this item was new for me. The first two ingredients are whole grain rolled oats and almond butter, which I like. Then there is kind of a lot of sugar, though (brown rice syrup and dried cane syrup are the next two ingredients) for a total of 14g. The flavor here was a lot more “zest” than just lemon, and that’s OK and not at all misleading since the product name actually has “zest” in it. I thought this was tasty but probably wouldn’t buy it again because that’s a lot of sugar for a single food item.
Sunny Fruit Organic Figs (1.76 oz) – Buy a 5 Pack for $7.63
We’ve received several Sunny Fruit dried fruit products in past boxes. But I think they are really high quality. They are just very tender and still have a good amount of moisture for dried fruit (they’re not tough and desiccated anyway). I don’t eat dried figs too often but I probably would if they were all like these.
Nutritional Choice Mini Graham Bites (1.1 oz) – Buy 10 Bags for $10 (found here for $9)
These have a little whole grain and were surprisingly flavorful for plain graham crackers (and different from the breakfast biscuits, which I ate on the same day). I haven’t eaten enough graham crackers lately to say how they compare to other brands of similar items, but I think they would make an excellent cheesecake crust if you could find a bigger package of them.
Mighty Peanut Puffs (0.7 oz) – Buy 12 Bags for $16.80 (found here for $14)
These smelled amazing when I opened the bag (I do like the smell of peanuts and peanut butter, though). They didn’t have as much flavor as I’d expected based on the smell, though, and the starchy part (made from corn grits) made these really stick in my teeth. I am not opposed to puff-style snacks, but like them to be a little more substantial (like with some fiber or something).
Crème de Pirouline Dark Chocolate Cream Filled Wafers (0.88 oz x 2) – Buy 6, 14 oz Tins for $23.65
Items like this (and wafer cookies) are fairly common in Love with Food and you should expect to receive them frequently. But, these particular ones are good, and surprisingly light.
Pretzel Pete Mini Twists, Salted Caramel (0.8 oz) – Buy 6, 3.5 oz Bags for $16.50
It took me a little while to decide what I thought about these, but I have decided that I like them. It’s a little weird, because they gave me quite a buttery vibe, but there’s no butter in the ingredients list (I suppose there could be something vaguely buttery in the “natural flavors”). I know we received the honey mustard and onion variety of these in a past box, and I liked those a lot, and I see there are some cheesy flavors and I would not be opposed to trying those in a future month. And, they have whole wheat pretzels, so if I was ever looking to buy any for myself, I’d consider those, since I try to stick to whole grain products when possible.
Simply Protein Crispy Bar, Lemon (1.4 oz) – Buy a 5.6 oz Box for $5.99
These allegedly contain white chocolate, which I did not know until I looked them up to write this review. So, that flavor is not obvious. The lemon isn’t too bad, though. It’s not a tart lemon and is definitely quite sweet although there isn’t much actual sugar in them. These are the style of bars with protein “crisps” (like Rice Krispie cereal), which have fewer calories than some of the denser protein bars.
More Labs Morning Recovery (3.4 fl oz) – Buy a 6 Pack for $35
I don’t know where to begin with this. First off, I don’t drink alcohol and this is marketed as a hangover remedy. So I am probably not the target consumer. It seems expensive for what you get at almost $6 per bottle. It is basically a sugar-free energy drink (with B and C vitamins and caffeine from green tea extract) and I did not think it tasted very good, to be honest. I didn’t want to take more than a taste because it contains milk thistle, which you are supposed to avoid if you are allergic to ragweed (which I am). I am suspicious in general of hangover remedies because they are a dime a dozen (just look at some of my past Bulu Box reviews) and I think if any of them were truly effective, bigger companies would be jumping on the bandwagon right and left. Anyway, that’s just my two cents.
Incredi Puffs Sizzlin’ Sriracha (0.74 oz) – Buy 16 for $20 (found here for $18)
These show up in Vegan Cuts every now and then and I think I like them better than some of the other puff snacks out there because they contain navy beans in addition to starch from potato and cornmeal. The navy beans provide a bit of protein and fiber and alter the texture in a way that’s pleasing to me. I also like the spicy flavor.
That’s It Bar in Apple + Pineapple (1.2 oz) – Buy a 12 Pack for $16.99
This item was puzzling to me. I love eating both dried apples (especially ones I make in my food dehydrator) and dried pineapple. But apparently I don’t care for them together? This had an off-putting smell (I don’t think the product was bad or old, I think there was just something I didn’t like about the smell) and that may have affected my sense of taste. I’ve had other That’s It bars that I liked a lot, so if you’re interested, maybe go looking for the blueberry or cherry ones instead (I’ve seen them in the checkout line at Target before if you want to try just one).
Vegan Rob’s Turmeric Chips (1.5 oz) – Buy 12, 3.5 oz Bags for $45.40
Amazon informs me that these are a “new arrival.” I do like receiving new-to-market items to try out in Love with Food. But these have a lot going on, and it may be a little too much. They have turmeric (which is obvious from the color and which imparts a flavor reminiscent of yellow mustard) and pumpkin flavor and algae protein (which I couldn’t detect) and chia seeds and it was a little bit like eating pumpkin bread with mustard on it, or something. I have tried some Vegan Rob’s products that I like a lot, but I’m thinking these are not going to be one of my long-term favorites.
Verdict: There were 17 items in the June 2019 Love with Food Deluxe Box (counting the packages of rolled wafer cookies separately). Although I didn’t love the taste of every item, what I did really like was receiving so many products that were completely new to me. There were really very few repeats this month, and not much kid food, and I appreciate both of those. The Bubbies coupon was a nice touch and I’ve already used it (I got the mango-flavored ones).
