Creepy Crate Spring Death Becomes Us A True Crime Festival 2019 - Information Card Top

This month has a variety of true-crime-based items and merchandise from the Death Becomes Us True Crime Festival!

Partners in Wine” Wine Glass Set (Limited Edition) — Retail Value for set of 2 for $30, on sale for $25

These wine tumblers are a real SCREAM! These glasses are not only serving me wine, but a bit of Joan Crawford from the cult horror movie, Strait- Jacket, REALNESS! I was impressed with how well these glasses were packed as well-- as you can see, they arrived to me in flawless condition! I don’t drink wine much these days, but maybe I will sip a bit of seltzer from these regardless. I just love the design and style of these glasses so much! If you do too these glasses can be purchased individually, in pairs, or in sets of four on the Creepy Crate site!

Creepy Crate Spring Death Becomes Us A True Crime Festival 2019 - Death Becomes Us Tote Bag 1 TopCreepy Crate Spring Death Becomes Us A True Crime Festival 2019 - Death Becomes Us Tote Bag 2 Closer

Death Becomes Us Tote Bag

Death Becomes Us is a true-crime-themed festival that will be taking place in November in D.C. this year! I have never heard of it, but I am mighty tempted to check it out possibly! This tote is an exclusive from the last festival. This canvas tote is lightweight, but ample in its size! I am definitely toting this one along to grocery shop at Aldi or to carry records in if I have a DJ gig. The style is also really simple and not extremely overt or gory, which I also appreciate. I will be using this tote quite a bit!

Creepy Crate Spring Death Becomes Us A True Crime Festival 2019 - BTK Security System Sticker Top

BTK Security System Sticker (Limited Edition)

This tongue in cheek sticker even made me shudder a bit, I won’t lie. It is a spoof of the ADT security logo that BTK strangler/murderer, Dennis Rader, was employed through. Rader had ten victims over the course of seventeen years between 1974 to 1991. He eventually got imprisoned in 2005, but the horrors Rader committed live on.

Creepy Crate Spring Death Becomes Us A True Crime Festival 2019 - Evil Has a Name by Paul Holes Free Audiobook Download Top

Evil Has a Name by Paul Holes, Free Audiobook Download — Retail Value $21.83

If you too have been fascinated by the case of the Golden State Killer written about in Michelle McNamara’s book, I’ll Be Gone in the Dark, then this is a must-listen Audible book! This Audible exclusive delves deep into the continued investigation of Joseph James DeAngelo. It is written and narrated by the forensic criminologist that helped crack the case, Paul Holes! This is immensely compelling and absorbing!

Black Dahlia Coasters (Limited Edition)

Another Death Becomes Us exclusive included in this box were these coasters featuring none other than Elizabeth Short aka The Black Dahlia. The case of her horrifying murder still haunts and captivates the masses seventy-two years after Short’s gruesome and untimely passing. These coasters show the two faces of Elizabeth: alive and glamorous on the left and at her autopsy post mortem on the right. What a heartbreaking case, to say the least. The coasters themselves are made from a thin, yet sturdy recycled cardboard material.

Creepy Crate Spring Death Becomes Us A True Crime Festival 2019 - Dead Like Us Pin 1 TopCreepy Crate Spring Death Becomes Us A True Crime Festival 2019 - Dead Like Us Pin 2 Top

“Dead Like Us” Pin

I LOVE this pin. It is on the smaller side, but I like that it is not ostentatious as some in my collection. It is morbid, but cute. This enamel, gold-plated pin may be an inch at most in height. This will look great styled with a variety of enamel pins on a jean or leather jacket or look great alone on a lapel or suit jacket for a more delicate and understated look.

Creepy Crate Spring Death Becomes Us A True Crime Festival 2019 - The Mad Sculptor The Maniac, The Model, and the Murder that Shook the Nation by Harold Schechter Paperback Book 1Creepy Crate Spring Death Becomes Us A True Crime Festival 2019 - The Mad Sculptor The Maniac, The Model, and the Murder that Shook the Nation by Harold Schechter Paperback Book 2

The Mad Sculptor: The Maniac, The Model, and the Murder that Shook the Nation by Harold Schechter, Paperback Book—Retail Value $13.46

This book details the Easter weekend murders of Veronica Gedeon, a commercial and Pulp novel cover model, and her mother and a boarder. The case was all over the newspapers in NYC back in 1937 when the slayings occurred. This is a fascinating read that takes you to post-depression New York and into the mind of the brilliant madman that committed these atrocities.

Verdict: Creepy Crate continues to deliver all that is macabre in horror-themed pieces and true crime alike! I loved the Audible book, Partners in Wine glasses, enamel pin, and Death Becomes Us tote best from this box—but let’s face it, it is all ways a great success. In addition, for all that you get from this box monthly—it is a fantastic value! I only had the retail value of three pieces of the seven included and they totaled up to $65.29! That is a fantastic deal considering the box is $39.99! This is a great gift for a horror/true crime fan, or heck, get it for yourself and give what you don’t like to friends. This is a spooky good time!

Wow, this box! How did I miss this review? I think it is definitely interesting but I in no way see how anything is glorified. I agree with some comments that if this box is not for you, then move on and skip it. I think it delivers and I am really interested in it. While I wont stick the sticker on my bumper or my kitchen window, I think its wicked and neat. I also never realized he worked for ADT — like whoa!

Also Paul Holes is so hot and genuinely so interesting and I love his voice (listen to his podcast every week) and I really want the book!

Um, BTK killed children I think the sticker is inappropriate I would much prefer a box about fictional serial killers and things that don’t exploit real people.

Michelle

The box is great and delivers what it promised. That said I think the BTK sticker and the coasters are in very poor taste.

For those saying if you don’t like, it don’t comment on it, this is completely different than not liking sheet masks or candles or a hundred other benign things.

I don’t see how anyone can defend profiting off another person’s tragedy — parading their pain around for the world to view as entertainment. It isn’t creepy. It’s disgusting. People aren’t commenting because they are sensitive or grossed out. They are commenting because it’s wrong and at some point, you have to stand up for what is right.

Send an email to the company that distributes it. I did. I love the concept of the box and would otherwise like to try it out, but I can’t get behind making light of the BTK or Black Dahlia cases. It’s easy enough to include items relating to those crimes without disrespecting the dead. They definitely crossed a line they shouldn’t have.

Then you must not watch tv shows like the “first 48″ or ” snapped” or hundreds of others….you dont like a box, skip it…there are movies made about true crime….its reality and is what it is

sara

As I read the comments, I thought how great it is we can all express ourselves so freely and make choices that back up our opinions! There are so many places in the world that you cannot do this or would risk going to jail or worse when expressing your opinion. It’s GREAT that we have this freedom : )

I’m a true crime buff ( Ann Rule ruled) and I’d definitely get this!! In fact, I’m going to sign up.

I’d like a tasteful homage to Sharon Tate in a box as this is the 50th anniversary of her murder, AND an actress portraying her is featured in the movie ” Once Upon A Time In Hollywood”.

Things I wouldn’t want: Food container items from SKs known to consume their victims’ remains; Anything that could POSSIBLY exploit a dead or missing child ( NO JB Ramsey dolls, for example).

I wouldn’t mind the Elizabeth Short coasters with her living photo, but knowing what the entire bisected torso looks like ( thanks, Internet- not), the postmortem image is very triggering for me. Am I the only one??

I can READ about almost anything but the photos really get to me. My imagination totally fills in the visual imagery in books with no gruesome photos.

I do like that they include a book in the subscription box.

AND, as a person who has a security system that was replaced once ADT’s history became known (
I’d love YARD SIGNS that say ” BTK” insead of ” ADT”, not just the window stickers.

So, yeah, really cool box as long as a few boundaries aren’t crossed into exploitation of female and child victims.

It doesn’t bother me but I wouldn’t use the coasters. This box is called creepy and totally delivers. Every time I don’t like something I just think i am not their target market. No need to tear the box to pieces or the reviewers. Just find something you like.

Jessica

I agree, and I would totally get this box..I’m hoping to see more reviews. Maybe it just needs a disclaimer that it may contain gore so people who are easily offended can look elsewhere.

Nina

I agree, this box is pretty on point if you take into consideration the majority of comments on this post and the ACTUAL definition of “creepy” :

causing an unpleasant feeling of fear or unease

Reply ButtonReply

Drminniecooper

I’m not afraid, I’m disgusted that someone’s mutilated corpse is being marketed as cheap home decor. Is that appropriate for the definition of creepy?

Kinda tacky & offensive… that being said, i think i want to sign up for this box!

Well it is called creepy crate.. and the theme is always True Crime… personally the autopsy photo coasters don’t bother me. We see countless amounts of violence and gore in movies in television. Putting a disclaimer at the top however would t be a bad idea MSA. It’s understandable how the subject matter could be sensitive to some.

I read this review yesterday and was absolutely flabbergasted at the contents of this box. I don’t normally review but I had the most terrifying dream last night that was directly related to the contents of this box and I am an adult.

I feel a little better seeing others like me think that this is in poor taste and crosses the line from creepy – I would expect ghosts, skeletons stuff like that – into just vile, disrespectful and disgusting.

You are better than this MSA. And the curators of this box/convention featured need to look at themselves.

Reply ButtonReply

Jessica

I for one thought the security sticker was very clever and funny. And I wouldn’t exactly call it glorifying murder in a dangerous way..People have always had a fascination with serial killers and death among many other taboo things..If anything It’s a way of coping with and facing ones fears. The Elizabeth Short autopsy photo’s I did cringe slightly at though. i felt bad for her being on display like that and couldn’t imagine setting my drink on her face :(. …But i do think this box looks interesting and am definitely going to keep my eye on it. I Would like to see more reviews.

Marion

While I get the fascination with true crime, some of these items — especially the coasters — glamorize murder in a way that is very harmful.

Elizabeth Short’s death in particular has been used to objectify women and eroticize the murders of young, beautiful women for literal decades. Isn’t it time for us to do better?

Reply ButtonReply

Anne

Absolutely! I actually scrolled through this review to see if the coasters in the top image were wat I thought they were. It’s in incredibly vile taste. As is the parody security sticker. But you’re totally right, using an autopsy image for entertainment value crosses all kinds of lines.

Also, MSA might want to consider a warning at the top of this review that it contains images which are disturbing. A lot of people enjoy fictional horror, but would not want to see those Elizabeth Short coasters!

I also find it generally disturbing how “true crime” is marketed like any other horror genre. I personally stopped watching criminal minds type shows a long time ago, but the prevalence of those as well as true crime shows and podcasts which sensationalize and fetishize gruesome crimes is a concerning social trend.

Reply ButtonReply

Jessica

No wonder you are so offended..If you can’t even handle watching criminal minds or listening to a true crime podcast..then this box is obviously not for you, and then that brings me to my real question..If Ya’ll are so sensitive then why would you even click on and read the review? You are an adult after all…This box may not be for you, but many people actually enjoy real horror and true crime…I’m actually shocked how many adults came here to complain and rip this box apart, when they could have just done the adult thing and realized it’s not for them, and went on to another review. Because this box is perfectly fitting for many people. It’s just shocking to see someone who can’t even watch criminal minds, even be commenting on this review.

Drminniecooper

I agree Anne. I did just read an article a few months ago about how the newest true crime authors and podcasters are trying to get a good balance between respecting the victims and telling the story in recent years. I hope that’s possible, but for a long time, the genre was just glorifying the brutalized bodies of the victims. And those damn coasters are just the epitome of the problem.

Shane

The coasters and “security” sticker are distasteful.

Reply ButtonReply

ks

I agree. I love creepy stuff but this isn’t cool at all.

Reply ButtonReply

Jamie

I just want the wine glasses. LOL

Reply ButtonReply

Drminniecooper

Those coasters are highly disrespectful. It’s one thing to be into creepy things. It’s another thing entirely to have coasters made out of someone’s autopsy photos. She may be a famous victim but she was a person too.

Reply ButtonReply

Delilah B

Nicole, thank you for your review. Yours and Anna R.’s are some of my most favorite to read! Having said that, and in NO way is this a reflection of your review, I think those coasters are just completely offensive. I think there’s likely a way to do a true crime box that doesn’t feel so disrespectful to victims of those crimes, and this isn’t it. This was an actual human being after all…:/

Reply ButtonReply

Jac

OMG agree! So distasteful.

Reply ButtonReply

katie

Agree.

Marie

Not gonna lie, this box is offputting. Making money by glorifying murder is a low spot in our increasingly calloused world. I like Dateline as well at the next person, but splashing out a real victims autopsy photo on something as asinine as a coaster or thinking a BTK home security sticker is cheeky is next level.
Hard pass.

Reply ButtonReply

Kristin

I agree. This isn’t creepy. It would be creepy if the items were based off of horror movies, scary folk lore, ect. This is fetishizing true crime, and the BTK sticker is glorifying a murderer. Ew, at the person commenting that they would have wanted a Sharon Tate item included and the Elizabeth Short coasters. Let the victims rest in peace already.

Jeannette

Interesting box. I love horror and true crime. I’ll need to see other boxes before deciding. Has MSA reviewed other months?
