Crate of Good Summer 2019 Review

I love that we start making an impact right away! This sticker informs us that to offset the cardboard used for this box, one tree has been planted.

I also love that they include this signed note at the top of each box which is such a great personal touch! They even invite subscribers to share causes that are important to them for future box ideas.

Each quarter they choose four different causes to support that fall under the four categories they thought were globally felt: Animals, Children, Environment, and Poverty. I love how transparent they are about who they are helping and how! Each item is accompanied by a card that tells you about the product you received and how this product is making an impact. It looks like the cards got an environmentally friendly upgrade and now have lines on the back so that you can reuse them for notes, recipes, etc.

Detroit Hives Raw Honey, 6 oz. (Buy an 8 oz. jar here for $25.00)

Animal Cause: Detroit Hives

Impact: A donation has been made to plant a flower bed to support honeybee conservation.

Saving the honeybees is something that a lot of companies are getting involved with lately, and this is a cause I fully support because, well, honey! Detroit Hives is an awesome non-profit group that takes vacant lots and turns them into urban bee farms. They are "purposed to bring diversity and cognizance to bee awareness and rebuilding inner-city communities introducing Detroit as a great place to 'BEE'." I am appreciative of the generously sized jar of delicious honey, and it tastes just a little sweeter, knowing where it came from!

Maximize your impact: Choose Animals as your cause and they will donate more to Detroit Hives and plant one additional flower bed!

Feya Candle Co. Scented Candle in Sage & Lemongrass - Retail Value $17.00

Poverty Cause: Kids Against Hunger

Impact: Every candle purchased provides a meal to a child in need.

This candle smells pretty amazing! It is so fresh and uplifting and the packaging is really beautiful. I also love that there was a tiny pack of matches at the bottom of the box - just one of those little things that made it feel a tad more special. As far as our impact, how can you not love receiving a candle that means a meal was donated to a child in need? Feya Candle Co. partners with various organizations around the world in order to provide meals to those who need it. Learn more here.

Maximize your impact: Choose Poverty as your cause and they will donate an additional 16 meals to a child living in poverty!

Woodchuck USA Wooden Bottle Opener - Estimated Value $20 (based on these)

Environment Cause: Woodchuck USA

Impact: One tree was planted for each bottle opener sold.

This bottle opener is so nice looking with the wood face and the Crate of Good logo. It feels nice and sturdy and is definitely a great conversational piece. Woodchuck USA has planted over 1.3 million trees around the world and not only do they support the environment, but they also support those who plant them. Our bottle opener even comes with a card that gives you a code to locate your tree. Mine was planted in Madagascar and helped create 3387 workdays according to the site! Their goal is to plant over 10 million trees by 2021, and if you're interested in joining the cause, they offer a lot of beautiful items on their site all made in the USA, such as these notebooks and these awesome maps!

Maximize your impact: Choose Environment as your cause and they will plant an additional four trees by donating to their charity partner, One Tree Planted.

Coffeehaus Brazil Coffee Beans, 4 oz. - Retail Value $7.00

Children Cause: Coffeehaus Fund

Impact: A portion of the proceeds have been donated to a fund that sponsors 650 children to attend school in Ethiopia.

Coffeehaus is a company that recognizes all of the work that goes into harvesting and producing coffee and its mission is to give back where they can. This particular brew is from a family owned farm in Brazil, but in Ethiopia, Caffeehaus has created a fund that sponsors children to attend school full time and in Mexico, they directly fund the health benefits of the farmers and their families.

Maximize your impact: Choose Children as your cause and they will donate 45 days of transportation and clothing for school to a student in Kenya through their partnership with Education for All Children.

This coffee is described as being sweet and having notes of stone fruit and caramel. I thought it had a very mild flavor that I couldn't really place which might be the stone fruit, and it was definitely fresh tasting.

Exclusive CoG/Detroit Hives Shirt, size L

Crate of Good Exclusive Item Cause: Detroit Hives

Impact: Share the mission of Detroit Hives in support of saving our honeybee population.

This limited edition shirt is large, comfortable and so soft! I love the fun phrasing on the front and I appreciate the nice golden shade of yellow that they chose. You can see it even has the little DH symbol in the exclamation point and of course, a cute little bee buzzing around at the top. This is such a great way to get the word out about an important cause!

I received a size L and as a unisex shirt, I think the fit is true to size. It is very oversized on me, which I actually love!

Verdict: Crate of Good gives me such a good feeling when I read about all of the causes and how each item makes an impact! I thought the causes were all unique, and of course, very important and I am never one to complain about receiving honey or coffee in a box! The wooden bottle opener is so nice, the candle smells great, and I love the cozy T-shirt, so this box was another winner for me. As for the value, I was only able to get the retail value for a few of the items, so I think taking the average of each of the five items makes the most sense. At $59.99/quarter (plus free shipping) that gives each item an average value of about $12. Considering the candle was $17 and a plain bottle opener retails for $20, I think it's safe to assume the value is there! The mission of this box also adds a lot to the value for me knowing that the purchase is supporting so many worthwhile causes.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? Yes, as of publication this box is still available!

Offer: Use impact code Brandi3 and they will provide an additional 45 days of transportation and clothing for schooling to a child in Africa (this is in addition to the impact choice you make at sign up).

Value Breakdown: This box costs $59.99 + free shipping, which means that each of the 5 items in the box has an average cost of about $12.

I am a homeschooling mom to 4 kids; 1 girl and 3 boys. While I have been reviewing boxes since 2018 and I love the luxury of trying new products, I'm also balancing it out by dabbling in a little bit of homesteading, too. We now have 4 chickens and a rabbit and my sourdough starter is going strong! I love learning about new brands and sharing the great things I find with others in hopes that they find something new to love or to fit their needs!
