Bulu Box Weight Loss July 2019 Review

There isn’t a theme for Bulu Box Weight Loss and there is some personalization involved, so the contents are usually a surprise:

There are also usually some coupons and/or product literature with this subscription. They don’t always relate to the items in the box, although sometimes they do.

Mason Natural Collagen Beauty Cream (0.1 fl oz) 0 Buy 3, 2 oz Jars for $15.75 (found here for $14.26)

You’ll occasionally receive a beauty product in Bulu Box. It’ll typically be skincare-related (or maybe something to do with hair growth, nail condition, etc.) and won’t be a color cosmetic, so it should be able to be used by anyone. This is a moisturizer that includes collagen. Collagen, even hydrolyzed (as this is) is probably too large of a molecule to penetrate the skin, but it would hold on to water near the surface of the skin, which is moisturizing and may help to temporarily diminish the appearance of fine lines. I think this is not quite right for me as there are also some silicones so it felt a little greasy on my skin, but your mileage may vary (for comparison, Vichy skincare also typically has silicones and I can’t use it, but it has a lot of fans). Collagen that is ingested has more of a proven benefit in terms of hair, skin, and nail condition, but this is a topical product.

SWAT Fuel 9mm + P Endurance Formula (2 capsules) – Buy 60 Capsules for $54.95 (found here for $39.95)

This is meant to be a pre-workout supplement, fat burner, and energy and endurance supplement all in one. The manufacturer makes a lot of claims that could probably get them in trouble with the FDA (like using this for weight management, appetite control, energy, stamina, fitness, training, as a nonprescription alternative to Adderall, etc.). As with most energy-type supplements, this has rather a lot of caffeine as well as some B vitamins, choline, and chromium. If you are sensitive to aspirin, don’t take it, as it includes willow bark (a source of salicylic acid). This has a caffeine equivalent to 2.5 cups of coffee so if this is something you’re interested in, I’d suggest trying out your sample while sitting on the couch doing nothing to make sure it doesn’t increase your blood pressure or heart rate too much. Don’t also use energy drinks while using this and limit your intake of caffeine from other sources as well.

N53 Cleanse1 Healthy Detoxifying Formula (12 capsules) – Buy 252 Capsules for $12

Cleanses are not scientific and “detox” isn’t a real thing. Your body is not full of “toxins” that need to be removed, and anything that *does* need to be removed, your liver and kidneys typically do just fine with (and anything they can’t handle, like heavy metal poisoning, you probably need to go to the hospital for anyway).

For what it’s worth, this is a lot of fiber and laxatives (senna). So you might think you are losing weight if you take it, but what you are actually doing is just emptying your colon, and once you stop taking it, you’ll build a baseline level of waste right back up again, and your actual body fat won’t change. I guess if you have a problem with occasional constipation, this could be helpful, but I don’t think it would be safe to take laxatives long term.

Also, I think it’s kind of funny that this has magnesium stearate from a vegetable source, but a gelatin capsule.

Growing Roots Organic Coconut and Seed Bites, Pina Colada (1 oz) – Buy a Variety Pack of 4 oz Bags for $15.27

I’ve had this before from Vegan Cuts (and last month’s regular Bulu Box). I liked this, which is more coconut than pineapple in my opinion. There are lots of small seeds that may get stuck in your teeth, though, as I found out when I used a Water Pik right after eating this. The package indicates that every purchase supports urban farms but this brand is also owned by Unilever, so make of that what you will.

Growing Roots Organic Corn and Seed Bites, Maple Bourbon (1 oz) – Buy a Variety Pack of 4 oz Bags for $15.27

I have become quite a fan of maple flavors in the past few years (I guess my tastes have changed) so I am happy with this one as well. I liked the texture of the puffed/popped corn bits, although a lot of the flax and chia seeds just kept falling off. Maybe eat this one with a spoon to make sure you get all the seeds?

Alfa Vitamins Garcinia Cambogia Plus, 2 powder packets – Buy 30 Packets for $28.99

I did mix this up to taste and it is not bad; there is a bit of an undertaste that may be the Garcinia, but I can’t say for sure. I didn’t know Garcinia cambogia was still a thing after Dr. Oz got questioned about weight loss supplements in front of a Senate panel (if you can find the video it is great to watch, especially if you don’t care for Dr. Oz, but it was four years ago and it’s a bit hard to find) but at least this is not a stimulant and people have been taking it for years, so it’s unlikely to cause harm even if it isn’t particularly effective. I do think this is an appropriate product for the weight-loss version of this box and is the kind of thing I would expect to receive in a weight loss-oriented box. (I have received this same sample before from Bulu Box Weight Loss, though it’s been quite awhile since the last time.)

N53 Lean1 Extreme Fat Burning Formula (2 capsules) – Buy 60 Capsules for $29.97

This has Garcinia cambogia (already discussed above) and raspberry ketones, another Dr. Oz-promoted weight loss supplement. It also has caffeine (discussed above as well) so be careful if you have circulatory system issues (it’s unclear how much caffeine is in this as it is not separated out from other stimulant ingredients). This also includes synephrine, which is banned by the NCAA and several other sports organizations, so if you are competitive in any kind of sport, you would want to stay away from this. This one has several ingredients shown to increase blood pressure (synephrine has actually been used to treat low blood pressure) so be extra careful when taking it. As with the SWAT Fuel one, I’d suggest if you are going to try this, to do it when you are just sitting around not doing anything and checking your pulse and how you feel before trying to exercise while using it. Better safe than sorry!

Verdict: This month’s box had 7 samples, so they’d average about $1.43 each. I’d say this was a pretty typical month for Bulu Box Weight Loss, with the kinds of samples I’ve come to expect. There were a few repeat samples from past months (this can happen, which is why I’d suggest only subscribing to one or the other version of Bulu Box and not both – with both, there are even more repeats). I liked the snacks the most but I was pleased to see a few more samples actually related to weight loss for once. I do caution you to research each and every ingredient of weight loss supplements before ingesting them, so you can be sure they don’t conflict with any medical conditions you might have or drugs you are taking for any of those conditions, as each person’s situation will differ.

I’d strongly recommend using a coupon code when you subscribe and choosing either the regular or the weight loss box, but not both, since there is a lot of product repetition between the two.
