Bombay & Cedar 'Summer Entertaining' Limited Edition Box Review Summer 2019

front cover of info paper all of the products inside and their info and values on page back cover of info paper

The first thing I reached for inside was the informational fold-over pamphlet. It contains all the items, descriptions of each, and their retail values.

Summer Breeze Essential Oil Blend, 10 ml - Listed Value $21.00

Roman Chamomile Essential Oil, 10 ml - Listed Value $19.00

I really enjoyed both of these oils and I am glad that even though this was a limited edition box, it still came with the duo in a pouch that I know and love. The Summer Breeze blend is a super summery mix of basil, citrus, lavender, and ylang-ylang. The Roman Chamomile has a very distinct sweet floral scent that is described on the card as "sweet apple." I couldn't disagree more! This oil is hard to describe but utterly recognizable in any product. If you have ever smelled the Sunday Riley Luna Oil, you will recognize it because it smells very similar to that blue tansy oil.

People, Places, & Things Set of 4 Tall Coolers - Listed Value $24.00

These acrylic glasses are delightfully retro, and look like something I might find in my grandparent's house. This is a good thing, in my opinion! Each has a different setting stage of the same sunset, making them really interesting to look at when they are all together. Because they aren't glass, they are perfect for outside BBQs or picnics, with no worries wasted on glass shards if your tumbler happens to be full of a particularly strong libation.

Terre Mere Brightening Eye Serum, 1 oz - Retail Value $112.00

I go through eye serums really fast, mainly because I often indulge in applying them all over my face. This one is a clear gel formula that is enriched with hyaluronic acid and plant stem cells. I am not sure plant stem cells have ever been an ingredient that I have been wowed with (yet!) but I do love plants so I am down. It also contains green tea extract, mushroom extract, and herbal anti-inflammatories.

HOMART Set of 4 Chalkboard Clips - Listed Value $9.00 (found here for $7.35, though prices vary across sites)

HOMART Box of Chalk - Listed Value $3.00

I will admit that I was a little bummed these chalkboards were just black painted wood. It would have been very cute to have actual mini chalkboards! These still work just fine for the purpose, though you can't easily wipe away the chalk without a semi-damp cloth. I plan on using them on my next cheeseboard, attached to rinds and herbs!

Plat Culinary Wide Tote - Retail Value $52.00

This item is so incredibly well made. It has two thick layers of 100% cotton and sturdy handles. The color pairing of the natural cotton canvas with the soft brick red is charming. Handmade in San Francisco, this sturdy tote is perfect for taking casserole dishes, cheese plates, brownies, or any other horizontally shaped food item on the go. As someone who has dropped an entire cobbler pan in her driveway before, this is a lifesaver for those slippery glass dishes or hot items. My family has tons of get-togethers and my poor mom is always struggling with transporting all of her still-hot items. I think this will be a perfect gift for her, though my Nana will likely try to borrow it indefinitely.

Gustus Vitae Lavender & Rosemary Sea Salt, 2.6 oz - Retail Value $9.00

I received 2 other flavors of these fancy salts in my latest Robb Vices box, and I have to say that they make much more sense in this one. This yummy sea salt has lavender and rosemary infused with its granules. It is the perfect complement to chicken dishes, popcorn, or dark chocolate! The bottom of the tin is magnetic, so you can stack multiples together or leave them on the front of your fridge for quick access.

True Brands App Picks, set of 4 - Retail Value $2.68

Another perfect cheeseboard accessory! These handy bamboo forks are perfect for leaving close to your cheeses or other apps for guests to select the perfect bites. They have a cute white handle which gives the rustic and natural looking bamboo a little extra polish.

AMP & Co Mini Cinema Lightboard - Retail Value $22.99

Use this little sign to display your evening menu or direct your guests to what movie you will be enjoying that evening. Or spell out your pets' names because they are THE BEST. This light can be powered with the included USB cord or 6 AAA batteries. It has holes for hanging on a wall and a large compartment in the back to stash all the extra letters.

Twine Marble & Wood Cutting Board - Listed Value $43.00

Finally, our last item is a gorgeous wood and marble cheeseboard! I am a cheese enthusiast and I always try to put together a somewhat impressive board with meats, cheeses, fruits, and honey when I have guests over. This board is a perfect match for the app forks and cute mini chalkboards. I really like the juxtaposition of the white marble and wood. Mine did arrive with a pretty significant surface scratch on the wood, but I plan on sanding it away. Or hiding it with a gigantic piece of brie.

Verdict: Bombay & Cedar always has some really unique items and this limited edition box was no exception. I loved the hostess theme! My favorite things inside would be the culinary tote, cheeseboard, and the super cute mini cinema light board. The one item that didn't quite fit the theme was the eye serum, which was also the highest value item. I think if you don't like or need a serum, you might be a little bothered by so much value in this box belonging to that little bottle. Otherwise, most anyone who enjoys hosting would be hard pressed to not enjoy the mini chalkboards, fancy salt, and cute appetizer picks. The overall value here seems to hover around $316.02 for the whole box, which is more than respectable for a $129 box.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? Yes, as of publication, this box is still available!

Value Breakdown: This box costs $129.00 with free shipping. Each of the 10 items (counting the mini chalkboards and chalk as one) have an average cost of $12.90.

I love natural/vegan beauty products, Korean skincare, unique jewelry, and weird candies from far away places. Hi everyone! I’m a teacher and would love to swap for the chalkboard clips. If anyone is interested let me know. As of today, nobody has listed them on the swap site. Thanks all and have a great day!

I thought the $129 seemed higher than I remembered from the spoilers. That does seem a bit shady if the cost has gone from $99 to $119 to $129.

Emilia

The cost has been $119 from the start. $99 with coupon for early birds.

Mary

Thanks for the clarification Emilia! I guess that’s not as bad then.

The Plat Culinary Wide Tote “on sale here for $39” link may be incorrect? It displays the item price as being $52.

Hey KW! It was on sale when the review was created, but it looks like that might be over now. I will edit the price info! Thanks for the heads up! 🙂

And coupon code doesn’t work for this box. It seems this one wasn’t meant to be for me.

Meg

When all of the spoilers were being released this box was listed as $119. Is it normal for B&C to raise the price of their box and THEN offer a discount code. I’m so tempted by this box but I’m sure if they’re being shady.

I wish I had a better answer for this question, but I don’t have any info about the pricing changes. Sorry about that Meg!

I have bought this box when it had just launched for $99. I barely ever entertain, however, I found a few products to be of value to me: the tote can transport egg cartons without tilting them, the cheese board is just aesthetically pleasing on my counter and I’ve wanted one forever, the eye serum will probably substitute a face one as it’s huge, essential oils will be used on dryer balls and the rest of the items will make fantastic creative gifts. I have to agree, the price is pretty high (+35% in CAD), but I only buy their LE boxes twice a year, so I can justify the cost. The items are unusual/rarely included in subscription boxes and of good quality.

I agree with Mary and Leslie, nice looking box but I feel its just too much. I think I can find comparable items online for half the cost.

It is lovely. If I currently needed a new fancy eye cream, I don’t, this would have been the rationale. I agree with Mary; it is too expensive for me as well.
Are Piper & Charlie pets? I’m hoping they’re book characters from a wonderful series I’m very late hearing about.

Piper and Charlie are my two senior dogs, though I think they would also make a great duo for a fun book. Speaking of which, I need a new series. Any recs?

I would be really bummed about the gouge in the wood, but otherwise, this looks like a great box. Just a bit too expensive for me.
