The Birchbox Travel Hair Kit Review

Birchbox Travel Hair info sheet

Here is the info sheet for the products included.

Birchbox Travel Hair davines

Davines SU Hair & Body Wash, 2.5 oz - Retail Value $11

I fundamentally oppose using a product that is designed for both hair and body actually on both my hair or body, so this bad boy was used as a body wash. It has a light citrus scent, and it is designed to help skin that has been exposed to the sun for a bit too long. This actually spilled in transit due to the lid not being on properly, but Birchbox customer service had a replacement order shipped to me after a quick conversation using the live chat feature.

Birchbox Travel Hair shampoo

amika Velveteen Dream Smoothing Shampoo, 2 oz - Retail Value $12

This shampoo is free of sulfates and parabens (score!) and is designed to help fight frizz. This was a little drying for my already dry hair, but I think if your hair leans more regular or even oily you'll like this shampoo.

Birchbox Travel Hair conditioner

amika Velveteen Dream Smoothing Conditioner, 2 oz - Retail Value $12

I'm a fan of this conditioner. I feel like my hair was smoother after using, and while it didn't weigh my hair down it still provided the moisture my curls are always begging for.

Birchbox Travel Hair sprunchie 1 Birchbox Travel Hair sprunchie 2

invisibobble® Sprunchie in Prima Ballerina - Retail Value $8

I have been wanting to try the invisibobble scrunchie since they released it- I lowkey have an invisibobble addiction for the fact that they don't get caught in my hair, can be shrunk with hot water once stretched out, and they are the one hair tie Duchess doesn't want to try and steal to play with. I love the gentle hold this scrunchie gives, though I made a mistake using it when I went to the gym- it didn't give me the hold I needed while doing a HIIT class, but it works just fine for running errands or studying.

Birchbox Travel Hair bumble

Bumble and bumble. Don't Blow It (H)air Styler - Fine, 0.5 oz - Estimated Value $3.10 Buy the full-size version for $31)

My hair really responds well to Bumble and bumble., and I appreciate that this is a leave-in cream specifically for air-drying your hair (which is my styling method of choice). Along with adding a small boost of volume to my strands, this also provides UVA and UVB protection.

Birchbox Travel Hair number 4

Number 4™ Lumiere d’hiver Fluoro5 Elixer Restore & Repair Oil, 0.5 oz - Estimated Value $6.50 (Buy the full-size version for $26)

My hair loves oils, which means I use them every time I shower. I am happy to have this small guy to keep when I travel, and this did a good job of keeping my hair soft and shiny while it air dried.

Birchbox Travel Hair r and co

R+Co HIGH DIVE Moisture + Shine Crème, 1.7 oz - Retail Value $16

I like R+Co, and this cream reaffirmed that. It helped to soothe frizz and added shine without weighing my hair down, and it smells nice, too.

Birchbox Travel Hair oribe

Oribe Run-Through Detangling Primer, 1.7 oz - Retail Value $19

I have tried this before, and I am pretty sure this sample is bigger than the other sample I tried. Either way, I enjoy the results I get from this when I spray it on damp hair before running a wide-toothed comb through my hair. I can't see myself ever running out of leave-in sprays, but if I do this would be a contender for a repurchase. As with all Oribe products, this smells delightful.

Birchbox Travel Hair wander

Wander Beauty Extra Mileage Hair Refresher, 0.94 oz - Estimated Value $11.89 (Buy the full-size version for $32)

This is the exact product I knew I needed but didn't know how to find- with my curls, sometimes the only way to get them styled the way I want them is to get my hair wet and start from scratch. This adds life back into curls that are losing their shape, and it also works great to help my curls form when I braid my hair when it's damp and then take the braids out later. I definitely think I will be buying the full-size version when this sample is out, which is rare for me.

The Verdict: I thought this was a great curated assortment of hair products! All of the sizes are TSA-friendly, but none of the samples felt especially tiny. I do wonder where Birchbox comes up with their values for kits, though, because once again the total value came in a bit lower than promised ($110 was promised and $99.49 was the actual value). I still recommend picking this kit up if you have a lot of travel ahead of you- all of these can help make having a good hair day on vacation easier.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? Yes, as of publication, this Birchbox kit is still available.

Check our Birchbox Coupon List to get the most up-to-date coupon!

And don’t forget to add your free sample pack with any $35 purchase.

Value Breakdown:  This box cost $40 ($35 + $5 shipping) and I calculated a total value of $99.49. That means you are paying approximately the following per item:

  • Davines: $3.87
  • amika shampoo: $4.22
  • amika Conditioner: $4.22
  • invisibobble: $2.81
  • Bumble and bumble: $1.09
  • Number 4: $2.29
  • R+Co: $5.63
  • Oribe: $6.68
  • Wander Beauty: $4.18

I am a staunch believer that pineapple doesn’t belong on pizza and when I’m not working as a family law attorney I enjoy hiking the Louisiana trails (alligator sightings are a favorite!) or relaxing with Duchess, my cat. I’m a sucker for anything labeled a mystery box and I’ve never met a bath bomb I didn’t like.

Jessica, my cat Max LOVES all hair ties except Invisibobbles too! They don’t work well for my baby fine, stick straight, thinning hair but I use them anyway. Max especially lives the braided hair ties made by Scunci, but pretty much any hair elastic will do. I’ve had other cats like playing with them but Max is OBSESSED. Not only does he throw them around himself so he can catch or chase them, he likes for me to fling them into the air so he can either catch them (mouth or paws) or chase them and…bring them back to me! He actually “plays fetch” with them! 👏👏👏He doesn’t do that with anything but hair ties or these really thin wrist bangles I have. But here’s where he goes from talented to strange. In addition to chewing them up to bits like a puppy, he’s constantly soaking the hair ties in the water dish OR putting them in the food bowl and eating around them. As if the food tastes better with a bit of elastic aroma. 😸Weirdo! He’s only 2 and his 18 year old sister does NOT appreciate his shenanigans with the food and water one bit. 😾
If she keeps getting on and off my lap that’s her way of telling me she needs hair tie removal from her bowls. 😄😄😄

Aww, I love reading kitty stories like yours 🙂 Isn’t that funny how cats are with toys? How they fling them in the air but then attack them like the toy is trying to get away from them? 😀 Your story of how your cat puts them in the water bowl reminded me of my dog and how he used to put his Mr. Bill doll head-first into his water bowl, then I’d have to “rescue” him then after laying him next to my dog he would lick Mr. Bill ever so gently as if to apologize, but wouldn’t you know exactly where I’d find him a littler later. lol! He would also chew and tug on Mr. Bill and then sweetly hold him and lick him again as if to say, “I’m sorry”. So cute! What was so funny was I always knew when my dog was playing with Mr. Bill because just randomly throughout the day or in the middle of the night he’d trigger Mr. Bill’s “Oh noooo!!!” Ah, such sweet memories. 🙂

I purchased this but haven’t had the chance to use anything yet. Great review. I’m most excited for the Wander spray.
