The Birchbox Smooth Hair Kit Review

Birchbox Smooth Hair Kit info

Here is the info sheet for the products included.

Birchbox Smooth Hair Kit number four

Number 4 Jour d’automne Smoothing Balm, 1 oz -  Estimated Value $5.88 (Buy a full-size 5.1 oz for $30.00)

This is a silicone-based smoothing balm, and while I try to avoid silicones for my curls my hair actually doesn't mind them too much. This smelled nice and managed frizz, but it didn't really leave a lasting impression on me.

Birchbox Smooth Hair Kit beauty protector

Beauty Protector Protect & Detangle, 1 oz - Estimated Value $2.94 (Buy a full-size 8 oz for $23.50)

I have tried this sample before, but I didn't realize it until now because the packaging design changed! This has four and a half stars with 140,000 reviews on the Birchbox website, and I am right there with the other reviews- this is pretty great. It doesn't weigh my hair down, but it does make it easier for me to comb through my damp curls. I really don't heat style my hair, but it is nice to know that this offers UV and heat protection, too.

Birchbox Smooth Hair Kit gloss me

Design.ME Gloss.ME, 2.5 fl oz - Full-Size! Retail Value $24

I have so many hair oils that when I pulled this out, I thought to myself "are we taking cannabis-infused products a little too far?" Then I remembered I literally have a crown I wear when I mask because I am the mask queen, and I slapped this on my hair. I have actually fallen madly in love with this lightweight dry oil- along with cannabis seed oil this also has vitamins A, C, and E and essential fatty acids. I have been using this after every shower for about a week now, and my hair has noticeably improved in how soft it is- I literally keep touching it and going "wow." The fact that this one full-size product is only $4 less than the cost of the entire box is pretty sweet, too.

Birchbox Smooth Hair Kit oribe

Oribe Supershine Moisturizing Cream, 0.5 oz - Estimated Value $5.20 (Buy a full-size 5 oz for $52)

I like Oribe products as a whole, but this isn't one for me to write home about. It gets the j0b done and it smells nice (though if you're sensitive to fragrances I would stay away from the entire Oribe brand), but at $52 for the full-size product, it certainly doesn't blow me away.

Birchbox Smooth Hair Kit amika

amika Velveteen Dream Smoothing Balm, 0.67 oz - Estimated Value $2.50 (Buy a full-size 6.7 oz for $25)

I am a fan of this brand, and I love that this has a base of sea buckthorn oil and other botanicals. This was lightweight while still fighting frizz, and it smelled good, too.

Birchbox Smooth Hair Kit hairgurt

Project Beauty Hairgurt™ Smoothing Yogurt Hair Masque in Strawberry Banana, 1.5 oz - Estimated Value $3 (Buy a full-size 6 oz for $12)

This was a new brand for me, and I am always down to try a new hair mask. It actually really does smell like strawberry (I don't really pick up banana), and it did a pretty great job at nourishing my curls and helping them be more manageable. I appreciate that I didn't need a ton of product, either, and I am super tempted to pick up the full-size version since it is so affordable.

Birchbox Smooth Hair Kit davines shampoo

Davines LOVE Smoothing Shampoo, 2.5 oz - Estimated Value $8.58 (Buy a full-size 8.45 oz for $29)

I shampoo my hair very sparingly, and when I do I usually use less than the recommended amount. I appreciate that this didn't dry out my hair, and it smelled nice.

Birchbox Smooth Hair Kit davines conditioner

Davines LOVE Smoothing Conditioner, 0.40 0z - Estimated Value $1.56 (Buy a full-size 8.45 oz for $33)

I don't know who at Birchbox thought that "hey, we should give them a ton of shampoo and a foil packet of conditioner," but it happens all. the. time. I liked this conditioner and how it made my hair feel nourished, and it has the same fragrance as the shampoo.

Birchbox Smooth Hair Kit tlw 1 Birchbox Smooth Hair Kit tlw 2

TLW Let’s Get Naked Frizz Fighter, 0.67 oz - Estimated Value $3.19 (Buy a full-size 4.2 oz for $20)

I am not really sure what's going on with the packaging on this hair serum, but I like that it is made with keratin, silk protein, and coconut oil. My hair drinks it up, and it definitely adds softness and shine.

Birchbox Smooth Hair Kit davroe

Davroe Ends Repair, 1.7 oz -  Estimated Value $10 (Buy a full-size 125 ml for $25)

I have been using this in conjunction with the Gloss.ME oil, and I have really enjoyed how it has been nourishing my hair. I go in first with the oil from mid-shaft to the ends, and then I take a tiny dollop of this product and apply it just to the ends of my hair. It works well to keep my ends tame, especially when I braid my hair to keep it out of my face.

Birchbox Smooth Hair Kit hair

Here is how my curls looked after using the hair mask, the beauty protector leave-in, the Gloss.ME oil, and the Davroe ends repair. I only towel-dried it and didn't add any curl-specific products, but my hair was happy and curled up nicely on its own.

Birchbox Smooth Hair Kit scrunchie 1 Birchbox Smooth Hair Kit scrunchie 2

Birchbox Scrunchies - Set of 3

Scrunchies are back with a vengeance and I am not mad about it, but I wish Birchbox had included higher-quality ones. They are pretty big so they don't hold too well, but I have been able to use them anyway so take from that what you will.

The Verdict: This kit was worth it for me the second I realized how much I loved the Gloss.ME hair oil, but as a whole, this kit has a lot of awesome products for the price. If you travel a lot (or shower at places other than your home), this would be a great way to stock up on products that keep your hair looking smooth and frizz-free. Value-wise, Birchbox promised a $100 value, and they came up pretty short with a total value of $66.85 for everything except the scrunchies.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? Yes, as of publication, this Birchbox kit is still available.

Gorgeous hair! I envy curls. I used to drop a lot of cash in the 80’s to get that look! If I did it now, my hair would be in a pile on the floor.

Way too many products with silicones, which is a continual problem with my birchbox samples. They send me something that seems like it should be good for curly hair, but then the ingredients list is loaded with it (eg that oribe cream has it as the 2nd, 3rd and 4th ingredient). I dont heat treat and sillicones just dry out and straighten my hair and then needs to be washed out so no go. Their kit for kinky curls about a year ago was actually awesome for products that were functional and not loaded with silicones and sulfates. Now I just buy those products on their own and give away the birchbox samples to someone else who heat treats.

Wow! Gorgeous curls! I bought this kit and am considering a second one. I have thick but fine wavy hair that frizzes as soon as I walk outside into the Texas heat/humidity.

Did you brush your hair over your face? Too funny, but that’s a great way to be able to take hair selfie 🙂

Thanks for showing this on curly hair. People tend to associate smooth with straight hair.
