The Birchbox x Oribe Curl Kit Review

Here is the info sheet for the products included.

Birchbox X Oribe Kit July 2019 - Moisture & Control Deep Treatment Masque Opened TopBirchbox X Oribe Kit July 2019 - Moisture & Control Deep Treatment Masque Front

Oribe Moisture & Control Deep Treatment Masque, 15 mL – Estimated Value $4 (Buy a full-size 8.5 oz for $68)

My curls love a good hair mask, and I was excited to try this one. I applied it to damp hair and shaved my legs and did a face mask so the mask was in my hair for at least ten minutes, and I definitely noticed an improvement in my curls after using. I probably wouldn’t buy the full-size version, though- I think the Ouidad Triple Treat Curl Immersion Deep Conditioner is just as effective, if not slightly more so, for less than half the cost and for more product.

Birchbox X Oribe Kit July 2019 - Priming Lotion Leave-In Conditioning Detangler Front

Oribe Priming Lotion Leave-In Conditioning Detangler, 20 mL – Estimated Value $3.03 (Buy a full-size 8.5 oz for $38)

I love a good leave-in conditioner- they help to keep my curls from tangling when they are dry so that I don’t have a ton of knots the next time I shower. This leave-in, like all of the products in this set, has that great Oribe scent (I don’t recommend this brand if scented hair products bother you), and this definitely made combing through damp curls easier and helped to prevent tangles once my hair dried. I am strongly considering buying the full-size version- I am currently using the Ouai Leave-In Conditioner that came in FabFitFun, and while I like it, this one definitely performs better for my curls.

Birchbox X Oribe Kit July 2019 - Styling Butter Curl Enhancing Creme Front

Oribe Styling Butter Curl Enhancing Crème, 20 mL – Estimated Value $4.65 (Buy a full-size 6.7 oz for $46)

This styling cream is full of nourishing oils and butters like shea butter, cocoa butter, jojoba oil, avocado oil, mango butter, and coconut oil.  It also provides UV protection! My hair soaks it up. I will say that I feel the need to pair this with the curl gelee to get the hold I like for my curls, otherwise, the weight of my hair will cause the curls to lose their coil throughout the day.

Birchbox X Oribe Kit July 2019 - Curl Gelee for Style & Definition Opened TopBirchbox X Oribe Kit July 2019 - Curl Gelee for Style & Definition Front

Oribe Curl Gelée for Style & Definition, 15 mL – Estimated Value $2.59 (Buy a full-size 8.5 oz for $44)

I love gel for my curls for the definition and hold they provide, especially in this south Louisiana humidity. I hate gel for my curls when it leaves me crunchy- that’s a big no go for me. Luckily, this curl gelée provides the definition and hold my curls need without a crunchy curl in sight. This still left my hair feeling soft, but when using it my curls didn’t fall out during the day like they do when I go sans gel.

Birchbox X Oribe Kit July 2019 - Creme Used Closeup Front

Because I am me, instead of trying these products out on a regular day (where if my curls didn’t like them I could throw my hair up and move on) I tried them out the morning I was going to take my law school graduation photos.

Birchbox X Oribe Kit July 2019 - Creme Used Front

Mike the Tiger is looking in the background and my hair is curly, soft, and shiny. What more could a girl ask for? (Also, that bright blue nail polish is from the Summer 2019 Orly Color Pass!)

Verdict: I wanted to love this kit so badly- I love Oribe, I love Birchbox Discovery Kits, and my curls loved these products. However, the math doesn’t lie, and the value of this kit doesn’t even meet the cost of the box. Birchbox promised a value of $40 in this box, and by my math, the grand total comes to $14.27. I was honestly prepared to buy a second kit to use for traveling due to the convenience, but the convenience and cute packaging isn’t enough to make up for the fact that this is worth $7 less than the cost of the box.

To Wrap Up:

Can you get this box if you sign up today? Yes, this kit is still available for purchase.

Value Breakdown: This box cost $22 + $5 shipping, and I calculated a total value of $14.27. You are essentially paying $6.75 per item.

I got the kit with my BB points. Totally not worth the price! Products were nice but super tiny…I especially like the curl creme and the gel. But I have super thick and long hair. I only got 1.5-2 uses out of this sample kit. I barely made it through my 3day weekend trip with these.

I’m so glad I didn’t end up purchasing this kit!

I actually called customer service to ask about the sizes of the samples in this kit because they weren’t listed anywhere online. I was told that info wasn’t readily available and they would email the product sizes to me later. They never followed up on it though, so I decided not to make the purchase. Now seeing that the product value doesn’t even equal the price of the kit, no wonder they don’t list size info online.

Congrats! I too prefer gel for my curls but I still am looking for one that isn’t crunchy. What else do you like?

My stylist recommends Innersense, and I’m so very glad I purchase the 2 products I did. I use the volume boosting foam, and volume gel. It does create a caste when applied properly to soaking dripping wet hair, but once it’s fully dry, scrunch and go. Absolutely the best I’ve used. Once I knew how to do the CG soaking wet style, I tried it with other products. I also really like Ouai curl gelle, but it’s very expensive and I get great results from innersense, and twice the product for the price.

It isn’t like Birchbox to mess up on values. Have you contacted them on the huge difference between their promised value and the actual value you received?
You look awesome btw and congrats.

Great graduation shot Jessica, you look beautiful!! 🙂 Congrats!

Thank you for reviewing this kit, I am always on the hunt for curly hair products. Looks like a decent kit, and I do generally like Oribe, but with the value being so low, I think I will pass on it.

You look so cute Jessica! 🙂

I know I’ve tried Oribe products in the past, but I honestly can’t remember what that great Oribe scent smells like that everyone loves so much. I was so excited recently to experience that scent, because I recently started using a full-size of one of their whipped mousses that I remembered trying a sample of and loving, as well as a sample of their dry shampoo. I’m sad though because I think I must have purchased an old mousse (I found it at TJ Maxx), because while the product itself works great, I think the smell is off… no joke, it smells like straight up bread! Lol! And the dry shampoo sample I’m using has no scent whatsoever (I usually use dry shampoos, texturizing, and salt sprays as hair fragrance since I don’t need them for what they’re intended for). 🙁 Weird. Well, I haven’t given up on Oribe, and will keep trying since I have a buttload of samples of theirs to get through. 😀

I don’t get the obsession either. To me Oribe doesn’t smell any different than any other hair stuff. Meh

Thanks for the review and for the price details. I’ve been eyeing this for awhile and wondered how small the products were. You look adorable in your pictures!! And these products do seem to be amazing, but the price is definitely off. Congrats on your law school success!!!
