A Small Blue Whale by Beth Ferry - Retail Value: $17.99 (Currently on sale for $10.91)

I have to admit, the artwork for this book was what initially drew me in. The art is definitely beautiful, and the story is cute, too. It's about a whale who is waiting around, hoping for a friend. He finds some but they go on their own ways, and then eventually he finds himself stuck on an icy shore and needing help, and some penguins come to help and they end up being good friends. It's cute, and I think the way the story is told helps kids think about how to be a good friend, too.

Uni the Unicorn by Amy Krous Rosenthal - Retail Value: $17.99 (Currently on sale for $13.49)

I wasn't drawn to too many of the June selections, but again I liked the art for this book. It's another sweet book, about a unicorn that believes that somewhere, out there, little girls exist. None of his friends believe in them. Then it jumps to a little girl that believes that somewhere, unicorns exist even though no one else believes. It's a cute idea! I see some reviews that feel like it's unresolved and that the unicorn and girl should meet at the end of the book, but I think that's part of the point - that they both believe that the other exist without having met each other.

The Verdict: My kids and I have enjoyed Amazon Prime Books Kids quite a bit! I chose the 3-5-year-old option for my 3-year-old. I really appreciate that I get an email before it ships so I can swap out and select which two books to get each time, and I trust Amazon's customer service if I have any issues (which, I have in the past, and it's been easy to correct it). This really helps to make sure we get books we'll like, and having new books to read has helped bedtime go more smoothly. For $19.99 a month plus free Prime shipping, we received two books with a total value of $33.98 (less with sale prices).

To Wrap Up:

Can you get this box if you sign up today? I'm not sure of exactly when Amazon swaps out their selection choices for the month, but if you sign up today you should get the July selections.

Value Breakdown: This box costs $19.99 which means you are paying approximately the following per item:

  • Blue Whale: $9.99
  • Uni the Unicorn: $9.99

Huge fan of the concept but can’t justify the cost of $10 for the hardcovers.
