This is a review of the large dog box for heavy chewers and dogs with food allergies. My dog, Nyx, is an 87-pound Rottweiler who is definitely a power chewer; she also has inflammatory bowel disease so we avoid pretty much all grains and most animal proteins.

Vet Pet Box Dog June 2019 Review
Please note: This subscription is somewhat customized based on preferences you select when you sign up. So, what you’ll see below are treats for a food-sensitive dog and toys for a heavy chewer:
Included was an information card with more information about the items in the box. Note: there are some variations based on sign-up preferences so you will not receive every item on the card.
And the last piece of literature was this educational brochure. There is always good information in there about a particular doggie-related health topic. (This is considered one of the benefits of paying for a subscription so the content is not reproduced here.) This month the information related to heat stroke. It is definitely hot where we live and Nyx does not like the heat, but because of some problems she’s had with her knee ligaments, we don’t typically walk her very far anyway (and we never let her out unsupervised – there are copperheads in the backyard!). But it is good information for summer, for sure.
Puppy Scoops Ice Cream Mix, Vanilla (5.25 oz) – Retail Value $6.99
This is a dog subscription box mainstay. You add water, stir, and put it in the freezer. It is better for your dog than human ice cream because it lacks a lot of the things that a dog shouldn’t have (like I love Halo Top, but it has sugar alcohols). Dairy is a bit iffy for Nyx but my parents’ dog absolutely loves this stuff so I will pass this along for her to enjoy.
Fou-Stick Soothe – Retail Value $5.99
I only now realized you could use this on cats as well as dogs. It is good for dry, itchy skin (a problem Nyx sometimes has due to her IBD medication) but I also think it might be useful on Madison’s feet if I can keep him still long enough to apply it. (He had some overgrown toenails that irritated his paw pads recently.) It’s got natural waxes and fats like beeswax, coconut oil, shea butter, etc. and it does not have a strong scent.
Jolly Pets Flex N Chew Bobble (large) – Retail Value $15.99
We’ve had some Jolly Pets toys before from various dog subscription boxes so I can already tell you that they are quite durable. This is supposed to float but my experience is that Rottweilers don’t like water (admittedly based on a sample size of the two I’ve ever had) so I’ve been putting a little peanut butter inside here instead, since that is something that Nyx enjoys trying to get out and it doesn’t upset her stomach.
Barkbone Stick by Pet Qwerks (XL) – Retail Value $19.99
Pet Qwerks makes a number of toys that Nyx enjoys (like the Flavorit bones). This one was new to us but, as expected, she thought it was great. Whatever flavors are in it, they don’t upset her IBD, and it seems durable. You can see some pictures of her playing with it below.
Good Protein Dog Snacks with Koji (cinnamon and banana flavor, 5 oz) – Retail Value $9.99
These treats seem a little expensive but if you subscribe, you get every third bag free, and they come with free shipping, and that makes them a great deal. For reference, koji is a fungus-based complete protein with a lot of umami flavor. The base is oat flour and there are other recognizable ingredients like peanut butter and flax for some healthful fats. Since these lack animal proteins and have only limited grains, they are a good choice for dogs with allergies and food sensitivities. These are made in the USA.
Here are some photos of Nyx with the stick toy. She always makes great facial expressions with toys of this sort. She chews pretty intensely but she seems to be enjoying herself!
Verdict: I calculated a value of $58.95 for June’s VetPet Box. That’s a reasonable amount above the month-to-month cost of the box, but I thought the curation was good also. The toys were definitely appropriate for a heavy chewer and I think it is nice to have some timely reminders and tips when it comes to hot weather and dog health and safety.

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? Due to customization (dog size/chewing habits/dietary issues), boxes may vary from month-to-month.
