Vegan Cuts Snack Box May 2019 Review

I think Vegan Cuts has really stepped things up lately in terms of snack box curation. Let’s see what they sent for May:

The box came with this information card detailing the items in the box. There was also a coupon for one of the brands from the box.

Vegan Cuts Snack May 2019 - Bar 1 TopVegan Cuts Snack May 2019 - Bar 2 Top

GoMacro Macrobar Protein Replenishment (peanut butter, 2.3 oz) – Buy 12 bars for $34.95

These are kind of expensive for protein bars at nearly $3 each, but they also have about 1/3 more calories, so I guess you are probably paying an average price per calorie, overall. I’ve had these in a handful of subscription boxes over the past year or two in all the flavors. I do like the peanut butter ones (what we got here) quite a lot, and the pieces of peanut add some nice texture to a plant-based bar (some plant-based protein bars have an unappealing texture, but this one works).

Vegan Cuts Snack May 2019 - Cherries 1 TopVegan Cuts Snack May 2019 - Cherries 2 Top

Stoneridge Orchards Montmorency Cherries (1 oz) – Buy 5 oz for $5.99 (found here for $4.13)

I do like these, but I have received them in probably 6 or 7 subscription boxes in the past 18 months. They are sweetened with sugar and have a bit of oil (I think to keep them from sticking apart? I don’t know but this is common with dried cherries). They are nice, large, whole cherries instead of just small bits, and I’ve never found a pit in one.

Vegan Cuts Snack May 2019 - Chickpea Top

Vana Life Foods Green Chickpea Superfood Bowl Coconut Chimichurri (10 oz) – Buy 6 pouches for $26.99*

We plan our meals for the week to reduce food waste (it works!), and this box came after we’d already done grocery shopping for the week, so I’ve put this item in the pantry, because every now and then something falls through with our plans (like we forget to buy squash when we are supposed to be having roasted squash and refried beans) and we have to improvise. So we try to keep one or two things in the pantry that we can use in a pinch. Vegan Cuts pantry items have definitely saved us in the past. In case you didn’t know, chickpeas are green when they are fresh (I’ve seen them for sale at Whole Foods) and only a cream or tan color when they’ve been dried).

*Please note, the Amazon listing makes it look like there is only 1 pouch for $26.99. Some of the answered questions on that page say there are 6 in the box, but some of the reviews complain about only getting 1, so I really can’t recommend ordering from that link at this time because I don’t know what you would receive. (The Amazon page says the shipping weight is 1.3 pounds, which doesn’t make sense for either 1 or 6, 10 oz. packages). Unfortunately, the manufacturer’s site sends you directly to Amazon (and the coupon shown earlier is for purchase on Amazon).

Vegan Cuts Snack May 2019 - Chips 1 TopVegan Cuts Snack May 2019 - Chips 2 Top

The Daily Crave Veggie Chips (0.6 oz) – Buy 8, 6 oz bags for $32.44

These are a pretty common subscription box snack. I usually get them from Love with Food. They are OK but very, very plain. They are basically composite potato chips (made more like Pringles than like sliced potato chips) with a tiny bit of vegetable powder for color. I think they would be great with a dip like there are dozens of vegan ranch dip recipes you can Google that would go really well with them.

Vegan Cuts Snack May 2019 - Cookie 1 TopVegan Cuts Snack May 2019 - Cookie 2 Top

Partake Foods Vegan and Gluten Free Mini Cookies (birthday cake, 5.5 oz) – Buy 3 boxes for $14.99

These are free of the top 8 allergens as well as a couple of other allergens. So they would be good to provide to a classroom for a birthday if you are worried about accommodating everyone. But, they are super dry. So if you want them for yourself, I’d strongly recommend dipping them in something (coffee, or vegan hot chocolate, or a nut-milk if you drink those straight). I’ve had these in a couple of flavors from All Around Vegan before.

Vegan Cuts Snack May 2019 - Corn 1 TopVegan Cuts Snack May 2019 - Corn 2 Top

Love, Corn (smoked BBQ, 0.7 oz) – Buy 10, 1.6 oz bags for $19.99

I feel like I have had these before, too, although I don’t remember if it was this flavor or not. These are crunchy corn snacks that aren’t too hard, and they do count as a whole grain. There is something a little strange about this particular flavor. It is sugar-free and maybe a touch of sugar and a bit more salt would make the BBQ flavor stand out a little more? These really stick to your teeth once you start chewing them, as well.

Vegan Cuts Snack May 2019 - Graham 1 TopVegan Cuts Snack May 2019 - Graham 2 Top

Nairn’s Gluten Free Oat Grahams (original, 1.41 oz) – Buy 5.64 oz for $5.09

And another repeat. These are OK but very plain. I’d love to see one of the other flavors (they have one with dark chocolate chips and another with raisins) just for a change. I’m not saying you should do this, but these would be really good with tons of frosting spread all over the top.

Vegan Cuts Snack May 2019 - Gum 1 TopVegan Cuts Snack May 2019 - Gum 2 Top

The Humble Co. Chewing Gum (fresh mint, 0.7 oz) – Buy 6 packs for $17.96

This is a plant-based gum (as opposed to a chemical gum base) and it has natural xylitol so it can help prevent cavities when chewed after a meal. (Just keep it away from pets.) I have had the lemon flavor before and I have to say, this mint is definitely more to my liking, although it tends to lose its flavor after a relatively short time.

Vegan Cuts Snack May 2019 - Raisins 1TopVegan Cuts Snack May 2019 - Raisins 2 Top

Life’s Grape Vine-Dried Grapes (1 oz) – Buy 12 Packs for $11.49

At first, I was like, “cool, dried grapes” and then I was like “hey wait a minute, those are just raisins.” (I was tired, all right?) Anyway, these are decent as far as raisins go, and they are conveniently packaged for snacking, but I am honestly more likely to just buy some raisins in the supermarket if I want them, than to order them online.

Vegan Cuts Snack May 2019 - Sauce Top

Lydia’s Coconut Curry Sauce Mix (2 oz) – Retail Value $3

This has ingredients that remind me of something in a Thai/Malaysian restaurant where I used to go. So we are planning one of our dinners for next week to replicate that dish (we just need some tofu, some cashews, and some potatoes) using this sauce. I feel like I’ve seen this brand before, but I can’t remember where. They have a lot of health foods on their site including some sprouted crackers and chips, lots of herbs, and a few drink mixes (among other things) so it is worth visiting their site and poking around a bit.

Vegan Cuts Snack May 2019 - Slender TopVegan Cuts Snack May 2019 - Slender Inside Front

Slender Sticks Coconut Water (4g) – Buy 12 sticks for $5.99

I do want to apologize for the darkness of the second photo. My kitchen has TERRIBLE lighting. Anyway, this is a powder that mixes up to be coconut water. If you like coconut water, it is worth a try. I am personally not a fan of coconut water although I will admit this has a better flavor than some of the kinds I have tried before.

Vegan Cuts Snack May 2019 - Svelte TopVegan Cuts Snack May 2019 - Svelte Inside Front

Calnaturale Svelte Looking Good French Vanilla Organic Protein Shake (11 fl oz) – Buy 8 for $23.15

This is also a repeat item for me. You know, I am not normally a protein shake consumer (I mix protein powders into smoothies) but this one does have a nice consistency (it’s blended well) and it is pretty tasty. It has some stevia but also some real sugar, which helps mask the taste of stevia a bit. The protein base is soy here, for what it’s worth.

Verdict: This month’s Vegan Cuts Snack Box had 12 items for an average value per item of about $1.91. To be honest, this was not the best month for me. There were a lot of items I’ve had either before from Vegan Cuts or from another box (All Around Vegan, Love with Food) including the mini cookies, the oat grahams, the GoMacro bar, the veggie chips, the protein shake, and the dried cherries. That’s half the items right there. (I’ve also had different flavors of the corn and the gum before).

There were fewer items this month than last, as well. I think part of the problem is that the whole box was gluten-free. Gluten-free snacks are more expensive so fewer can be included, and they start to feel a bit repetitive (dried fruit, oat-based cookies, etc.). I think Vegan Cuts could have a market for a dedicated gluten-free snack box, maybe quarterly or a limited edition box if they can’t come up with enough items for monthly, but it would be better as a separate subscription (potentially with some crossover items) so those people who need to avoid gluten and/or wheat for medical reasons could do so and not have to pay for a lot of items they can’t use in a monthly subscription, and so the rest of us could have a bit more variety and new items in the regular box.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? You will receive the June box shipping 6/17.

Value Breakdown: At $22.95 for this box, you are paying about $1.91 per item.

I agree 100%. Sometimes I eat four of the items as soon as I open the box and this was not one of those times! I definitely appreciate it when they include savory/meal items, though. I stashed the chickpeas and protein shake at work for emergency lunches and used the curry mix in a clean-out-the-fridge-before-vacation stir-fry. I like VeganCuts because I never think to buy snacks or sauces, so it remains a great sub for me, even if I don’t love all of the items. But bring back the gluten!!!

I have to admit it took about 10 seconds for the dried grape thing to sink into my brain too – but they were exceptional raisins. I liked the birthday cookies – because my husband didn’t like them, so I got most of the package. I agree this wasn’t their greatest – I think I received a few additional items, which they often do – throw in a couple past items. I’m still a fan and like Ragan I haven’t yet tried the sauce or meal – I’m keeping them for that emergency day.

Maybe because I didn’t get the additional/past items, but only what was on the information card, is the reason it seemed a little thin to me.
