Unique Vintage May 2019 Review

You never quite know what you’re going to get with this subscription. It could be a party dress or one that you could wear to work. Sometimes the package has a card in it, but this month it did not.

A note: Unique Vintage has changed their subscription model and now you have an account where you can sign in and handle things like skipping, updating payment, and so forth.

Let’s see what I got this month:

Unique Vintage May 2019 - Dress Front

Unique Vintage 1950s Black and White Gingham Sleeveless Rachel Swing Dress – Retail Value $98

We’ve had a lot of bold floral patterns lately, and a lot of bright colors, so we were due for a neutral. Although I am not much of a neutral-wearer, there is something about this pattern that works for me. I think because there is still a lot going on with the dress, so even though it’s neutral, it’s not plain. Plus, because it is black and white, I can wear pretty much whatever accessories I want. (I kept it simple here, with red shoes and red lipstick, and I do really like black/white/red together, but there are other options.)

Unique Vintage May 2019 - Dress Back

Here is a shot of the back. The straps are attached to these little metal rings, which is an interesting detail. Unfortunately, it means they are not adjustable, and they are a bit long for me (I think my torso is pretty short). But I think this would be a pretty quick alteration (by someone who knows what they’re doing, of course, not by me!).

And here is my favorite part:

Unique Vintage May 2019 - Dress Side

Unique Vintage sizing is a little weird for my body type (but I’m pretty sure it’s actually my body type, as I have no curves) and sometimes I have a hard time zipping up the backs of the dresses because I have a rib cage and all. (I can’t get a larger dress because the bust size would be way too big and that obviously wouldn’t work for a dress of this nature.) But anyway, there is a bit of stretchy material at the sides that enabled me to actually zip this up myself, without help (though my husband had to do the little hook at the top of the zipper).

Also, you see a belt at the left of the folded-up picture of the dress, and I am not wearing it. One of the belt loops broke when I tried to thread the belt through them (they were pretty thin threads) but, as it happens, the belt didn’t fit comfortably at the line separating the top from the skirt portion, so I just cut both the belt loops off. (This is a midsection size issue for me and probably won’t affect other people the same way.)

Just to be clear, these are vintage style dresses, not actual vintage dresses, and the subscription covers sizes XS to 4X, with everyone getting the same dress.

Verdict: The dress I received has a retail price of $98, which is a good value for this subscription at $41 over the cost of the dress plus shipping. The style is fun and wasn’t a challenge to get myself into. It is super hot here and so if I have any events where I have to dress up during the summer (weddings, etc.) I don’t even have to go shopping. (This is probably not a work dress…)

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today?  No, all boxes ship out at the same time of the month so it’s too late to get the May shipment. However, if you like the dress, you can order it from the link above. (Sign up for their email list; they have coupons and sales every now and then.)

Value Breakdown: This subscription costs $57 ($50 plus $7 shipping) and you get one dress. Tax may also be charged now but that will vary by location.

Does everyone get the same dress each month? Or is there some sort of preference survey that they try to meet as much as possible?

Also, is it easy to subscribe and then skip months? I just can’t imagine getting 12 dresses/year and being able to wear them enough to justify the $57/month cost.

Thanks!

Are you sure the straps aren’t adjustable? Are they attached to that metal bar running across them? It looks like there’s room to tighten them above the metal rings.

Jennifer

I was just about to ask the same thing. They look like bra straps.

I came to the comments section about the adjustable straps as well. They totally look adjustable to me with that metal slide thingy lol. I think it would be the first time I have ever seen that on a strap of any kind of garment and it be not adjustable. No alterations needed.

K

I blew the pic up and the straps absolutely look adjustable.

Question for subscribers: did you get the June package yet, and was it the same as the April dress? Because that is what happened to me today.

Sara R Manjarrez

I got mine today and it was a different dress.

Wow, what an oversight on their part! I hope they remedy that for you!
