May 2019 Play! by Sephora #980 Review

Sephora Play! May 2019 Box 980 info sheet

Each box comes with a foldable info sheet. The front always has a design related to the theme. This month it's "Greetings From Play!" for National Best Friends Day, which is June 8th.

Sephora Play! May 2019 Box 980 play pass

Each box comes with a Play! Pass, which is a card you can use at Sephora (in-store AND newly online as well! Woo!) to get 50 extra rewards points, and you can also get one-on-one tutorials and tips of products from a Sephora consultant.

Sephora Play! May 2019 Box 980 item details

The opposite side of the info sheet has pictures of each item and details about what they are, how to use them, and why Sephora thinks you’ll love them.

Sephora Play! May 2019 Box 980 bag back

Every month they include all of the samples in a mini bag with a different design. This bag is 100% recyclable and zips shut which is great for storage or travel.

Sephora Play! May 2019 Box 980 tarte cleanser

Tarte Rainforest of the Sea Deep Dive Makeup Removing Gel Cleanser, 7.5 ml - Estimated Value $1.25 (Buy a 5 oz full size for $25)

I really like this cleanser! It's very gentle, smells nice, and effectively takes off all my makeup. I've used it a couple of nights in a row now, and I really like how it doesn't leave my skin feeling stripped and dry afterward.

Sephora Play! May 2019 Box 980 leave in spray

Moroccanoil Protect & Prevent Spray, .67 fl oz - Estimated Value $3.72 (Buy a 5.4 oz full-size for $30)

I always use leave-in treatments for my hair to help protect from heat damage of styling. This one works fine, I liked it okay and will finish it but it didn't blow me away. This formula is supposed to help protect color and fade brassiness, which is perfect for my blonde hair in the well water at my house. I hope that longer, regular use will actually work to keep my color looking the way it should.

Sephora Play! May 2019 Box 980 coola sunscreen

Coola Mineral Sun Silk Creme Sunscreen SPF 30, .24 fl oz - Estimated Value $6.72 (Buy a 1.5 oz full-size for $42)

I haven't tried Coola's sunscreen before, so this is a new discovery to me. I love that it's organic, has clean ingredients, oil-free, and has high zinc content as well. This formula goes on really nicely, absorbs well without leaving a white cast (that I could detect, at least), and it doesn't dry down matte which works great for my dry skin.

Sephora Play! May 2019 Box 980 lancome primer

Sephora Play! May 2019 Box 980 lancome primer open

LANCÔME CILS Booster XL Super-Enhancing Mascara Base, .07 fl oz - Estimated Value $9.58 (Buy a .19 oz full-size for $26)

I've tried this lash primer before, and I like it. It has vitamin E so it's nice and conditioning. It helps with length and volume, but I didn't notice much curl added. It goes on a translucent white, which is kind of fun because you can really see the difference when you apply your regular mascara over top.

Sephora Play! May 2019 Box 980 bite beauty lipstick

Bite Beauty Amuse Bouche Lipstick in Chai, .05 oz - Estimated Value $8.67 (Buy a .15 oz full-size for $26)

I've loved Bite Beauty ever since I was introduced to them while I worked at Sephora. This lipstick formula has great pigmentation, a matte finish, and good lasting wear time. This color, Chai, is a mauve-brown shade that I think would look good on anyone. Part of me wishes they had sent a lighter, brighter shade for Summer but this one would work for any time, I think.

Sephora Play! May 2019 Box 980 perfume

Sephora Play! May 2019 Box 980 perfume inside

Jo Malone London Wood Sage & Sea Salt Cologne, .05 fl oz - Estimated Value $3.40 (buy a 1 oz. bottle for $68)

Perfumes are generally the bonus items in each Play! box, FYI. I like this one - it's earthy and fresh, with notes of ambrette seeds, sea salt, sage.

Sephora Play! May 2019 Box 980 primer and lipstick modeled

Here, I'm wearing the lash primer and the lipstick, as well as the sunscreen under my foundation.

Verdict: This month's Play! by Sephora box has an estimated value of $33.34 which is a really nice value from a $10 box. I'm really happy with this month and got to discover some new products I like. I enjoy my Sephora Play! boxes because they will always feature high-end brands, and I love trying new things or getting extras of things I already love.

I received the Bite lipstick and I love it. I’m wearing it today. I would definitely buy the full size once this is gone.

Thanks for the great review, Haley.

I got the Lancome’ lash primer, the Tarte cleansing gel and the Moroccan Oil Protection spray like you did.

My other products were Benefit Badgal Bang! Volumizing Mascara, Kora Organics Noni Face Oil and a floral fragrance sample, Carolina Herrera’s ” Good Girl”.

I hardly ever get color products like lip colors or eyeshadows. IDK why not, but it’s annoying to get SO MUCH mascara.

Still, I like the subscription, and I like keeping all my products visible in the clear bags. I’m always running out of room for sub box makeup/ skin care items.

I REALLY MISS the MSA spoilers for Play! that give the box number with the contents of each. It was a lot of fun to see what all the varieties were. 🙂

We got the same bag! And yes, I’ve got oldies of Mascara.. probably six or seven of those Bad Gal ones themselves. I was really liking the spoilers with the variations too! I’d rank them by which one I wanted most to least and hope I got that one 😂

After a year and a half, I finally cancelled my Sephora Play subscription. I’m definitely dealing with product overload

I’ve always thought that lash primer was one of the better ones out there, which it should be given the cost. After reading your reviews for such a long time I’m pretty sure you have very pretty lashes naturally. So I don’t know how much credit goes to the primer in your photo, but your lashes look AMAZING! Like you’re wearing falsies!

In the past, Haley said she uses a lash growth serum, but I can’t recall which one she said she uses though. Even though my lashes are naturally long, I wish I could use those serums (because why not!? lol 🙂 ), but I always got a reaction from the ones I tried, whether it be my lash line swelling or the skin drying out. I guess I’ll never have “Haley” lashes 🙁 . 🙂

Dani

Oooh! I need to know which one! My lashes are fairly long but they’re blonde, almost stick straight and there aren’t that that many of them. Especially now that I’m starting to age. 😫
If

I tried a serum from one of the vegan beauty boxes (I can’t remember their name but it was the one that ended not that long ago) last year that did nothing. I can’t recall the brand but I remember it was in a wood or faux wood tube.

I’ve been using Smartlash Advanced for about 6 months now. It cuts down on losing lashes and it’s made an improvement but not much. I’m back to having the healthier lashes of my youth, but that’s not saying a lot. If
you haven’t tried it Luna, it might do something for you since you’re already starting out with long lashes. Do not let it get in your eyes though, because it burns pretty bad. It does quickly subside, but best to just be super careful especially with a brand new tube. You have to wait until you see most of it run down from the top of the brush and drip back into the tube first. If I’m careful to do that it’s pretty easy to not over apply, especially with the extremely thin brush it has.

I used something ages ago, probably my late 20’s/early 30’s, that actually made a significant difference but I can’t remember what it was. I could probably just do some research since that was so long ago and there probably weren’t many of these kind of products around. 😄

I know there’s one that is or used to be only available by prescription that’s supposed to work really well. However, a side effect is that it can darken or change the color of your eyes. My baby blues are the one thing aging change a whole lot (although I’ve heard they may turn more grey as people get older) so I won’t risk that.

Wow. I had a lot to say about lash growth serum. 😁😁😁

You got a great box! If I go to Sephora the employees are rude. I order what I want over the internet. Not everyone wants to go in store and be treated poorly to beg for samples. I’m sorry they act like that. I think they look at older people and Don’t think we are going to buy anything. Saying that I still want some things sometimes I can not get at Ulta.

Reply ButtonReply

Wendy

Every time I’ve ever been into an actual
Sephora store the employees have been rude. I refuse to buy from them. And I’m young….

Reply ButtonReply

Carla

I personally like Ulta way more. They’re always friendly and helpful plus much larger and spacious.

Danielle

I feel the same and I always have. I finally just stopped doing ANY shopping in their stores. It’s terrible not to be able to see things in person because there’s often such a discrepancy from what you see online. And of course not having access to testers isn’t ideal either. No way to judge efficacy or see if you react to something negatively. Never mind actual take home samples. Like you said, some of us practically have to beg. I don’t know if it has anything to do with age though because I was treated poorly even in my late 20’s/early 30’s, which is why I gave up. I’ve never been wealthy but I certainly dress and look decent and typically spend a fair amount of money feeding my beauty product addiction. So I never understood why I was treated like a second class citizen, especially at the register when I asked for a sample or two given that all orders online got at least 3 (2 now), and often at least one deluxe one with promo codes. They acted like they were doing me a favor by taking my money so how dare I ask for something for free. I never understood it. I do all my shopping online now but it’s somewhat inconvenient because I end up having a lot of returns. And now I’m having trouble with that because I didn’t receive credit for a couple of returns and when I emailed I received responses that not only didn’t resolve the issue, but showed the rep didn’t seem to have read or comprehended it. The first response made it clear they had very little command of the English language with incomplete and nonsensical sentences. The next few reps spoke (typed) somewhat clearer English but still could not seem to understand or resolve the simple request of providing credit for the 4 items I they acknowledged were in fact returned. They kept claiming various different amounts had been given as online credit though they definitely had not.

Sephora used to be the only big beauty store for mostly higher end makeup but now they have much more competition, online at least, than just Ulta. I don’t think they’re going to remain on top for that much longer. I’ve spent so much money with them over the years but after not being able to shop in store and now being unable to successfully do business online, I’m taking my business elsewhere.

I agree with you completely Danielle. I recently ordered from Nordstrom and got free shipping on a $20 order and got three samples. You might want to check them out.

Michele

I absolutely love Sephora. I’m sorry you have that experience there. Anything I want to try that always offer a sample for me to take home. I do purchase mostly online just because I get different samples. But I go into the store to get color matched or to smell a scent or try something before I buy. I also do my returns in store instead of mailing them back.

I’m not sure what you mean by “older” but I’m a few months shy of 50 and always get treated great at Sephora. On the other hand, I cant even get acknowledged when I walk into Ulta. Plus Ulta is so dirty. Ie., hair in the hair brushes, safety seal removed from products for sale cause a customer wanted to try it instead of the product on display. I guess it all varies as to where you live. In our mall, ulta and sephora are a 1 minute walk from each other. Because of the reasons I mentioned above, I have yet to purchase anything from Ulta where I live now (NY). Use to go there regularly when i lived in NC. But Sephora has always been my favorite. With that said, i have never subbed to Play!.

Luna

First of all, you’re so lucky you have an Ulta & Sephora right next to each other! Lucky!!!! Where I live, Sephora’s are usually in malls, and Ulta’s are usually in strip malls. Still typically close to one another (like a 5-10 minute drive), but it would still be nice to be able to walk between them without having to cross crazy busy streets.

But I also wanted to relate with you in my experiences at Sephora & Ulta. I always get outstanding service at Sephora, and the only acknowledgement I usually get at Ulta is when the cashier welcomes me as I walk in. In the prestige section, there could be multiple employees doing nothing and I’ll hardly get a glance as I walk by them. Granted, I do like to be left alone when I browse, but still a friendly smile when we make eye contact while I’m smiling at them would be nice. However, if I do speak to an Ulta employee, they usually are pretty nice. I guess I just need to make the first move. lol Overall, I prefer to shop in store at Sephora, but online for Ulta (that’s how to get all the good gwp offers from them anyways 😉 ).

Nina

Ya I’m curious how people get samples in Sephora. Do you have to ask for specific products to sample or something?? I don’t even get free ones in my bag at checkout anymore and I spend over $150 every time I’m in there!

Reply ButtonReply

Nadia Archuleta

I think it depends on the store. Weirdly, I go to the one in the fancy mall near my work, and I get every sample I ask for and then some. (I asked for two eye cream samples and got FOUR). I go to the more humble Sephora near where I live, and they act like I’m asking them to give me samples out of their own personal makeup bags.

Marilyn

I see all these Sephora store/on-line comments so I’ll add my own here.
Nearly always I have a great experience at Sephora stores, particularly my local store. . . but even those on my trips out of town. They let me try many products in the store AND I often ask for very specific samples and have never had a problem getting one, if they carry the product in that store. The bummer is when the store doesn’t handle a certain brand.
I’ve ordered on-line and not received the samples I selected.
My daughter spent a summer working at a Sephora stocking outlet in Utah one summer and I know the samples aren’t always available or fulfilled by the employees. Most intersting was that my daughter came home telling me the popular items as they stocked for both individual purchases AND store restocking.

Sara

Employees are supposed to make up to 3 samples for you upon request, but it is honestly kind of a hassle (having to track an employee down and oftentimes they act annoyed). I find it’s worth my time to get samples of: skincare, foundation, or perfumes. I rarely purchase anything in the store….if you order online, you can choose 2 samples and they often have nice GWP offers (deluxe sample for purchases at least $25 or more, depending on the kind of sample). Look under “beauty offers”, they change often.

Lori

I ask people on the floor, mainly for perfume samples, but sometimes skincare or foundation. I ALWAYS ask for free samples when I check out at the register and most of the time, they just throw one in my bag. I’ve gotten a range of reactions, from super happy/willing to reluctant, but never outright rude. I’m sorry you’ve experienced that. 🙁

Daria

It’s a cute sub but all of these look to me like samples that you can get in-store without paying for them.
