Love with Food Deluxe May 2019 Box Review

The information card has changed yet again, probably due to Love with Food getting bought out by Snacknation, so there aren’t really themes anymore:

There was a little product literature this month, but not much.

Love with Food May 2019 - Go Lite! Sweet Maui Onion Popped Chips Close Top Love with Food May 2019 - Go Lite! Sweet Maui Onion Popped Chips Open Top

Go Lite! Sweet Maui Onion Popped Chips (7/8 oz) – Buy 10 for $11 (found here for $10)

Most things onion flavored, I am going to be a fan of, and this was no exception. These also had a satisfying crunch. Being mostly cassava, they are largely starchy and not the most nutritious of snacks, but they were tasty and would probably be fine as an occasional snack. (They are also gluten-free.)

Love with Food May 2019 - One Bar, Cherry Open Top Love with Food May 2019 - One Bar, Cherry Close Top

One Bar, Cherry (0.9 oz) – Buy 12 for $18 (found here for $15)

I think this was a new product for me. The reason for being unsure is there are a lot of dried fruit bars out there and I have trouble keeping track of them. I do note the first two ingredients are dried pears and dried apples, which are cheaper fruits that are usually used for filler in snacks of this type (and that is not unique to this brand). As a result, this did taste more like apples and pears to me than it did like cherries, but I still actually liked it. (Dried fruit is usually something that works for me, either in pieces or bar form.)

Love with Food May 2019 - Thinsters Cookie Thins, Chocolate Chip Open Top Love with Food May 2019 - Thinsters Cookie Thins, Chocolate Chip Close Top

Thinsters Cookie Thins, Chocolate Chip (1 oz) – Buy 12, 4 oz Bags for $35.88

I do not normally care for hard, packaged cookies. However, these had a really satisfying texture. But I think I might like some of the other flavors better (they have one in key lime pie I’d love to try, and also cinnamon).

Love with Food May 2019 - Crunchsters, BBQ Close Top Love with Food May 2019 - Crunchsters, BBQ Open Top

Crunchsters, BBQ (1.3 oz) – Buy 3, 4 oz Packages for $13.49

These are sprouted mung beans. I think this is a legume I have not had in snack form before, and the texture was decent. This was a good choice of variety, as well. I get a little tired of sea salt so I was excited to see something with a little more flavor to it. You probably need to eat them with a spoon, though, as the pieces are quite tiny.

Love with Food May 2019 - Zee Zee’s Mixzees Dried Fruit Close Top Love with Food May 2019 - Zee Zee’s Mixzees Dried Fruit Open Top

Zee Zee’s Mixzees Dried Fruit (1.33 oz) – Buy 36 Boxes for $31.95

I guess this is meant to be one of the kid-friendly items this month, but it works for adults as well. It actually reminds me of something quite similar we had when I was younger (probably from Sun-Maid or a similar brand). It’s just pineapple, raisins and golden raisins, apple, and cranberries, all in similar-sized pieces. I can see how this mix might make a kid more inclined to eat raisins if there was some other stuff included as well.

Love with Food May 2019 - Bunches of Crunches Superfood Granola, Dark Chocolate Coconut Close Top Love with Food May 2019 - Bunches of Crunches Superfood Granola, Dark Chocolate Coconut Open Top

Bunches of Crunches Superfood Granola, Dark Chocolate Coconut (1.1 oz) – Buy 50 Packs for $50

This looks like it has undergone a name change and/or packaging change but I linked to a product that sounds really similar, if not identical, on the manufacturer’s website. These are superfood grains (amaranth, millet) although the main component is gluten-free oats. This has a decent amount of fiber although the sugar’s a little higher than I’d like, at 8g per serving. The texture was good (sometimes ancient grain products can have a strange texture, but they made it work here).

Love with Food May 2019 - Jana Banana Bar with Peanut Butter Close Top Love with Food May 2019 - Jana Banana Bar with Peanut Butter Open Top

Jana Banana Bar with Peanut Butter (1.41 oz) – Buy 12 for $14.90

I feel like we receive one of these about every other month. However, peanut butter and bananas make a good combination, and this isn’t too sticky, and the color is a little more appealing than just a plain banana bar, so I was happy to eat it. I think if we see one of these again, I’d like for it to be one of the more unusual flavors, like cinnamon and sugar or banana and plum, just for a change.

Love with Food May 2019 - Janis and Melanie’s Key Lime Cookies Close Top Love with Food May 2019 - Janis and Melanie’s Key Lime Cookies Open Top

Janis and Melanie’s Key Lime Cookies (1.5 oz) – Buy 10 Bags for $21 (found here for $17)

We have received these several times before in Love with Food, but they are really good (I think; I also like their raspberry cookies) and I have ordered them from the Love with Food rewards pantry in the past. I’d suggest having a drink with them as the texture is such that they will stick to your teeth once you chew them, but I’m still a fan.

Love with Food May 2019 - Poppies Coconut Macaroon Close Top Love with Food May 2019 - Poppies Coconut Macaroon Open Top

Poppies Coconut Macaroon (1.2 oz) – Buy 15 for $18.45 (found here for $15)

I did not know just how many brands of coconut cookies there were until I had a Love with Food subscription. There are so many. This one was completely new to me. This is one case where a “plain” flavor works; it allowed the coconut flavor to come through. The texture was soft and springy and not super dense.

Love with Food May 2019 - Appleways Chocolate Chip Simply Wholesome Oatmeal Bar Close Top Love with Food May 2019 - Appleways Chocolate Chip Simply Wholesome Oatmeal Bar Open Top

Appleways Chocolate Chip Simply Wholesome Oatmeal Bar (1.2 oz) – Buy 12 for $12 (found here for $10)

If you imagine a soft oatmeal cookie with a little less sugar, this is basically what you’d come up with (in bar form). My husband didn’t realize until after we were finished that there were chocolate chips in here; there actually weren’t many at all, and they were tiny. There are 9 grams of sugar (8 are added) but compared to an actual cookie, that is not so bad, though perhaps still not something you’d want to eat every day. This has some whole grains and also enriched flour so there are some added vitamins, though I don’t think it’s quite enough food to replace a whole meal.

Love with Food May 2019 - Utz Premium White Cheddar Popcorn Close Top Love with Food May 2019 - Utz Premium White Cheddar Popcorn Open Top

Utz Premium White Cheddar Popcorn (0.75 oz) – Buy 10 Bags for $10 (found here for $8.75)

This had a great texture for bagged popcorn, with not too many shell pieces or unpopped kernels. But also it was cheese-flavored (with real cheese) and that made me happy.

Love with Food May 2019 - Daelmans Caramel Stroopwafe Close Top Love with Food May 2019 - Daelmans Caramel Stroopwafe Open Top

Daelmans Caramel Stroopwafel (1 oz) – Buy 24 for $19.99

I’m going to be honest, unless there is something like chocolate or cinnamon added, I’m not able to tell one stroopwafel from another (I think we’ve had this one before, though, because it was already in my Google search history). But that’s OK because I like them all. (I’m not kidding myself into thinking these are healthy. They are an indulgence and that is OK as an occasional part of a balanced diet.)

Love with Food May 2019 - Zee Zee’s Roasted Sunflower Kernels Close Top Love with Food May 2019 - Zee Zee’s Roasted Sunflower Kernels Open Top

Zee Zee’s Roasted Sunflower Kernels (1 oz) – Buy 15 Bags for $15 (found here for $13)

These are very similar to other roasted sunflower kernels I’ve had. They are fine, they just don’t really stand out to me in any way compared to any others. I suppose the character on the package might appeal to kids?

Love with Food May 2019 - You Love Fruit Super Berry with Acai, Pomegranate, Goji, and Mango Close Top Love with Food May 2019 - You Love Fruit Super Berry with Acai, Pomegranate, Goji, and Mango Open Top

You Love Fruit Super Berry with Acai, Pomegranate, Goji, and Mango (0.5 oz)

This is a new flavor that I can’t find on the manufacturer’s website yet, although other flavors of this same item show up in Love with Food all the time. These are little sticky dots of fruit leather (I guess so you don’t have to bite or tear pieces off of a larger section?) I don’t mind eating these when they come in a subscription box, but I probably wouldn’t buy them, because on the page I linked to above, you are paying something like $1 for a half ounce of food, which seems kind of steep.

Love with Food May 2019 - Think Thin High Protein Bar in Creamy Peanut Butter, Chocolate Dipped Close Top Love with Food May 2019 - Think Thin High Protein Bar in Creamy Peanut Butter, Chocolate Dipped Open Top

Think Thin High Protein Bar in Creamy Peanut Butter, Chocolate Dipped (2.1 oz) – Retail Value $1.45

I have had these before. They are not my absolute first choice of protein bars because they have almost no fiber, but they are good occasionally to mix things up. The internal texture reminds me a bit of a 3 Musketeers bar if a bit denser, and the chocolate coating really helps with the eating experience. They are sweetened with sugar alcohols (not artificial sweeteners) and they do contain dairy.

Love with Food May 2019 - Country Archer Turkey Stick, Rosemary Close Top Love with Food May 2019 - Country Archer Turkey Stick, Rosemary Open Top

Country Archer Turkey Stick, Rosemary (1 oz) – Buy 10 for $20 (found here for $17)

I am a vegetarian so I gave this to my dad, who was in town for a visit. He ate it on the plane ride home and seemed to enjoy it. (For what it’s worth, he is happy to eat pretty much anything.)

Love with Food May 2019 - Popcorners, Kettle Corn Close Top Love with Food May 2019 - Popcorners, Kettle Corn Open Top

Popcorners, Kettle Corn (0.5 oz) – Buy 12, 7 oz Bags for $30

I’m not really a fan of these.  I’ve had them in about six food subscription boxes in the past year. These chips have kind of a chewy texture that makes me think they’re stale, even when they’re not, and I find that I don’t care for the kettle corn flavor, in particular. If we get these in a future box, I’d like to try one of the spicier flavors (they have a few) to see if maybe I enjoyed those more.

Verdict: There were 17 items in the May 2019 Love with Food Deluxe Box. This is an improvement over the last few months of 2018 when there were fewer than 15 items per month. Some items were things we had received before (Popcorners, Jana banana bar, key lime cookies), and one was not vegetarian (this is not a strictly vegetarian box), but I was basically happy. Now that it has been a few months since SnackNation took over Love with Food, my overall impression is that things are improving. I noticed fewer kid-specific options this month, which is fine by me, honestly, although that could change next month, of course.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today?  You’d receive June’s box as your first box, but check the Love with Food shop, as sometimes past boxes will show up there.

Value Breakdown: This box costs $19.95 + free shipping, which means that each of the # items in the box has an average cost of $1.17.
