Lipstick Junkie May 2019 Review

Lipstick Junkie May 2019 - Info Card Back TopLipstick Junkie May 2019 - Info Card Front Top

The theme for May is a Mother’s Day celebration. They say on the info card “Whether you’re a mom, a soon-to-be mom, or just someone who loves lipsticks, we hope you’ll love what’s in this month’s box!” Although I appreciate the effort to tie the box into a holiday in the month, I do feel like the Mother’s Day label feels a little bit exclusionist - there are a lot of women out there who are struggling with infertility, or who have chosen not to have children at all. I would prefer to see a box theme that includes all the people who might be subscribers!

The info card also describes details about each of the products included. Now, onto the fun part - the lipsticks!

Vermillion Cosmetics Verminis in colors Beaming, iCandy, and Birthday Suit - Retail Value $21.00

I love the size of these mini lip stains! I have the constant struggle of trying to fit a lipstick or lipgloss in my clutch purse, and sample-sized or smaller-sized lipsticks are my go-to for when I carry a bag like that. We received three different colors of their lipsticks - a bright bubblegum pink, a neutral beige, and a black.

Lipstick Junkie May 2019 - Vermillion Cosmetics Closeup Top

Here are the shades swatched on my wrist. Unfortunately, none of these colors are remotely wearable for me. I can’t imagine that any of these three colors work for very many skin tones, and I wish they had included shades that more people could have worn. I’m all about trying out bright new lip colors, but these three particular colors looked too cartoonish for me to wear.

The formula feels like a mix between a gloss and a cream, and it dried into a stain-like matte lipstick. I was easily able to remove the lipstick with a makeup remover wipe, which is always a bonus for me. One thing that was interesting to me as I was researching for this review is that the Vermillion Cosmetics company is branding itself as a dental care brand - and it says that they are trying to provide dentist-supported lip products. I don’t see any research or facts backing up how their products are different than anything else on the market, but I found this to be an interesting take on lipsticks!

Please note that the Verminis are not currently for sale on their own. Only the full-size lipsticks are available via their website.

Lipstick Junkie May 2019 - Laritzy Lip Gloss in Supreme Opened TopLipstick Junkie May 2019 - Laritzy Lip Gloss in Supreme Top

Laritzy Lip Gloss in Supreme - Retail Value $16.00

This lip gloss is described as being formulated as extra hydrating and glossy. The color is very pretty - it’s borderline true red with berry undertones. This is a summer color I can get behind - it’s bright and fun but still very wearable.

The formula is thick without being goopy, and the color payoff is fantastic. I was able to get a full wash of color with just one swipe! I thought this had great staying power and was comfortable to wear. See the look I created with this below!

Beauty Vaulte Lip Liner in Mazy Maya - Retail Value $6.00

This is a deep red lip liner by Beauty Vaulte, which is a new brand to me. The lip liner is described as buttery smooth and blendable, and I found that to be true. It’s a sharpenable pencil, which is great because you can always sharpen it to a fine point.

The card also says that 5% of the company’s profits are donated to an organization that helps victims of domestic violence. I love a company that gives back as part of their mission!

Here are swatches of both the Laritzy lip gloss (top) and the Beauty Vaulte lip liner (bottom). I love that these pair nicely together.

Lipstick Junkie May 2019 - Lip Liner Look Front

Here I am wearing just the Beauty Vaulte lip liner. I think this is a very easily wearable look! I love a great red lip in the summertime, and I like that this color isn’t too dark or dramatic on me.

And here is the Laritzy lip gloss layered on top of the lip liner. I love how glossy this is, and it wasn’t sticky at all.

Verdict: This month’s Lipstick Junkie has a retail value of $43.00, which is a great value for an $18 subscription box! I think the box is a great way to try new things you wouldn’t typically pick up for yourself. Even though the Vermini colors were a miss for me, I really liked the other two products so this box was still a win for me.

I used the $5 code for the box. The cardboard box was super cute! The contents look nice, but all are being gifted as all the products are made in China – at least in my box! I do not wear makeup or skincare made in China. Even Chinese who live in North America are hesitant.

Have you tried mixing the mini colors? Perhaps a touch of the black with the pink might make it wearable? Just a thought.
The red looks amazing on you!

That’s a great idea, Dawn! I will have to try that to see if I can tone the pink down. Thanks for the kind comment!

Ibordered for $5 on Crate Joy. In the past I’ve have good experiences with Crate Joy. Easy to cancel as well.

The three mini gloss shades are gross. What’s the point of sending out yucky shades pretty much no one can or would wear?

I am such a lipstick fanatic that I keep reaching for my wallet before reminding myself I am supposed to be cutting boxes… not adding new ones! Although $5 to try it out isn’t a bad deal at all 😉

Beauty Vaulte is new to me, too. Their brand is not very searchable due to the name. I bet it’s another private label brand we’ll soon be seeing in boxes everywhere.

I find your take on a Mother’s Day theme being exclusionist to be somewhat strange. It could hardly be a more inclusive celebration, as almost everyone has (or has had) one! Which makes it even more inclusive than any religious, or even political, holiday.

Besides, they specifically mention including “just someone who loves lipsticks!”

Many of the boxes reviewed here mentioned Mother’s Day. I’m sorry if it’s a sore point for you.

100% agree. If you don’t like surprise themes, maybe beauty boxes aren’t for you. Sub companies cannot possibly cater to every single trauma, ptsd, allergy, or disdain towards a major major national event/holiday.

I have many friends who do not have mothers, and never had a relationship with their mother. Additionally, I have friends and family members who have not been able to have children. Mother’s Day can be a painful “holiday” for some women.

As for the Laritzy gloss, did it bleed after a while? I can’t bring myself to try glosses like this. I can’t wear gloss over lipstick because it bleeds. Actually, gloss has never been my friend. I’ve been wearing lipstick and lip liner since I was 13. I would love to try a glossy look like this, I just fear it will end up going all over.

Krista

Thank you for your thoughtful comment! I had no problems with the gloss bleeding at all, but then again I don’t typically have a problem with that. I live in a very dry climate so I think that has something to do with it. I hate sticky glosses and this one wasn’t sticky at all and was very comfortable to wear. I hope that helps!

Trish

I suffered through years of infertility and loss and stayed away from anything reminding me of Mother’s Day. Getting this card in a lipstick box would have devastated me.

Jamie

I don’t think it’s strange at all. It isn’t inclusive to have a box that’s supposed to cater to lipstick fanatics ostracize an entire community. Not everyone gets to be a mother, chooses to be a mother, and/or has a good relationship with her mother. I am glad Krista pointed it out. It makes me feel a little less alone in my struggles to know someone else sees even the little things that eat away at you.

Nina

I agree with the reviewer. I think it’s great when companies offer a limited edition box that can separately be purchased for Mothers Day but making it the theme isn’t what I’d call inclusive.. Its kinda strange to me.. maybe if I were planning on gifting it to my mom.. but when I subscribe to a box, it’s for myself. 🤷🏻‍♀️ And I am not a mom sadly.

Thank you for reviewing this box! Those three mini colors look pretty hard to wear And the value of the box doesn’t really seem like it’s worth it. However, The lip liner looks great on you!
