KnitCrate Membership May 2019 Review
KnitCrate Membership is the flagship box from the KnitCrate brand. In my opinion, it’s the best box to start with if you’re looking to expand your knitting knowledge or expand your yarn stash! The yarn they send is from one of their in-house brands, and it’s always very high quality.
A card was included in the box this month talking about the fact that we only received one skein of yarn this month. This is the second month KnitCrate has sent out one skein (as opposed to the normal amount, which is two skeins of yarn). The March Membership box was the first month they tried out this new idea of sending one skein in a luxury base, and they received a bit of backlash and disappointment online from subscribers. I personally don’t mind getting only one skein once in a while if it means we get to try out an exciting blend of yarn, but everyone is entitled to their own opinions! I really appreciate KnitCrate doing this survey to see what we think of the changes.

KnitCrate Inspirations Booklet, May 2019 - Retail Value $40.00
The pattern booklet included a download code so that you could add the PDF version to your Ravelry library. When I used the code it listed the booklet as having a value of $40, but at the time of our review, the booklet is not currently for sale as a separate item.
This month, when you go to retrieve the online download code, you get an extra three bonus patterns! The patterns are designed to go with this month’s Artisan pop up shop.
The theme this month is “Farmer’s Market,” and I think this is just so dang cute. KnitCrate always excels at coming up with unique and fun themes for their boxes, and this month is no exception. I love the idea of finding yarn inspiration in the colorful Farmer’s Market stalls full of fruits and vegetables.
There is only one colorway sent out this month. It’s called “Citrus Squeeze” and it’s variegated yarn made up of different citrus fruit colors.
The KnitCrate Membership box always has one knitting pattern and one crochet pattern included. Usually, the two patterns coordinate in some way or are variations of the same type of item, and I think this is a great feature of the box. This month, both featured patterns are socks! I have never crocheted socks before, and I’m curious to know if they are comfortable to wear.
I love this knitted sock pattern - the small cables look like a row of lemons! It fits perfectly with the Farmer’s Market theme this month. I’m definitely keeping this pattern for the future, but decided to make the cowl right now (shown in the card photo above) because I was so drawn to that pattern the moment I saw it.
The booklets always include a bio page on the designers behind the patterns, and I always love reading these. You can also see a glimpse at the pop-up shop yarns and patterns on the opposite page.
The back of the booklet shows a sneak peek of the theme for June. It will be “Calico” and I can’t wait to see what they come up with from this color palette!

Knitology Cozy Sock by KnitCrate in color Citrus Squeeze - Retail Value $30.00
The yarn this month is a blend of light orange, yellow, and blush pink. I think they absolutely nailed the citrus theme - I can see the oranges, lemons, and grapefruit that inspired this color!
The yarn is 75% Superwash Merino, 15% nylon, and 10% cashmere. The cashmere content of this fiber is what increases the luxuriousness of the blend (and therefore the price), which is why we only received one skein this month, instead of the usual two. The yarn is fingering weight and contains 439 yards in 100 grams.
Blueberry Hill Stitch Marker - Buy a pack of 5 for $9.00
This blueberry beaded stitch marker fits so perfectly with the theme this month! I can’t get over how adorable this is. The hammered silver ring is very well-made, and the blue and green glass beads are so pretty. I love having a fancier stitch marker to mark the beginning of my row, and this was one I was excited to put to use right away.
Sew Cute Ladybug Buttons - Buy a similar pack for $6.39
These buttons are so fun! They seem a little bit random to be included in this box, as they don’t go along with any of the patterns in the booklet, but I still appreciate getting an extra item or two in the months where we only get one skein of yarn. I think these would be precious to add onto a baby cardigan.
I loved the Jounce Cowl pattern so much when I saw it on the card (pictured above), so I decided to use my yarn this month to make it. I was a little wary of how these three colors would look in the knitted fabric, but I am surprised at how well they pair together! I think the orange, yellow, and pink are in a close enough color family that the overall effect of them knitted together is very tonal.
The stitch used in this cowl is very unique and was fun to learn. It’s almost a combination of brioche and ribbing, and it’s quite easy once you get the hang of it. I love the texture that it’s creating, and think that this cowl will be the perfect accessory for chilly spring nights.
Verdict: I thought this was a great KnitCrate box! I love getting to try new luxury bases (especially cashmere!), and I thought the theme was so fun this month. I also really appreciated that the two extra items went along with the theme so nicely! If you are a knitter or crocheter who is open to trying new types of yarn, this would be a great subscription box to check out! For $24.99, we received one skein of yarn and three knitting and crochet patterns (plus three bonus e-patterns!) with a total retail value estimated around $70. I think this is an amazing value for what you receive, since the high-end premium yarn is usually around $25-35 per skein in a local yarn store, and most patterns on Ravelry are $5-10 each.
A few other things that are good to know: if you follow KnitCrate on Instagram or join their Ravelry group, they reveal spoilers at the end of each month (usually around the 20th) before the subscription renews on the first. If you are pickier about what fibers you like to use or want to avoid certain colors, these would be great to check out. (The June early preview page can be found here) Otherwise, you won’t know what the theme, yarn, or patterns will be before they renew your subscription for the month.
