Knit Picks Skill Builder May 2019 Review
Knit Picks is a fantastic online store for knitters and crocheters, and it’s always been one of my favorite places to shop for yarn and tools! They recently launched a line of subscription boxes that feature different products, and although I’m primarily a knitter, I also love crochet and was excited to try this box!
A card is included in the box that details the contents of this month’s Crochet Lover box. The description reads, “Get ready for the warmer months with the easygoing stitches of the Boothbay Harbor Shawlette, crocheted in our beloved Hawthorne yarns.”
There was a second card in the box that goes into more detail on each of the different boxes available. MSA plans to review a different box type from Knit Picks each month, and we are leaving the choice up to you! Now, onto the good stuff - the yarn!
Knit Picks Hawthorne Tonal Sock Yarn in color “Klamath Falls” - Retail Value $12.99
Knit Picks Hawthorne Multi Sock Yarn in color “Lovejoy” - Retail Value $12.99
There are two skeins of Knit Picks’ Hawthorne Sock Yarn included in the box - one in a multi-colored variation, and one in the tonal variation. I really love both of these colors individually, but they aren’t necessarily two colors that I would pair together for a project. I think the warm orangey-pink of the Lovejoy colorway clashes with the gray-blue tones of the Klamath Falls colorway, but color is a very personal preference and this may be the best combo ever for someone out there!
This is a fingering weight yarn that contains 80% Superwash fine highland wool and 20% polyamide (which is similar to nylon). There are 357 yards in 100 grams, so it’s on the thicker side for fingering weight (a typical fingering weight skein is around 400-420 yards).
The other skein has the same make-up as the first. You can see in this photo that each strand of the yarn has a slightly nubbly texture from the way it was spun, and I love that it looks a little bit rustic from this. This color is so beautiful - I love the combination of these warm sunset tones!
Boothbay Harbor Shawlette Pattern - Retail Value $4.99
The pattern featured in the box is a lacy triangular shawl that fades two colors of yarn together. The pattern photo shows two fairly high-contrast yarn colors in the sample, but I love how you can see speckles of the blue color in the yellow/green colorway - I feel like this ties the two colors together well. I think the shawl pattern is very elegant and easy to wear, so I plan to order a different color of the Multi Hawthorne that I feel like goes better with the blue included in the box and use that for my second skein.
Here’s the start to my shawl! I found this pattern a little bit confusing at first when I was starting the set-up rows, but once I got into the swing of the pattern repeat it was actually quite a simple stitch pattern. It’s only two different rows to memorize, and it became very relaxing once I got into the main body of the shawl.
This yarn has such pretty texture! The stitch definition isn’t super crisp due to the two-ply structure of the strand, but I don’t think that having defined stitches are always the most important thing in a pattern. The fabric this yarn is creating has great drape and is very soft, while at the same time having enough structure to keep its shape. I am really enjoying crocheting with this yarn, and I know this will become one of my go-to staples for future projects. Plus, this yarn is an amazing price for a hand-painted skein of yarn (which often retails for $30+!!).
Verdict: I thought this was a great Crochet Lover box! I think this is a perfect box for someone like me, who knows the crochet basics but is looking to take their skills to the next level. I appreciated learning a new stitch technique, and I love that they sent very high-quality yarn in a base that I ended up loving!

Value Breakdown: For $27.00, we received two skeins of hand-painted yarn and a crochet pattern, with a total retail value of $30.97. Knit Picks advertises the boxes as having a $30 value, so this is spot on with what they promise. If you know you are a fan of Knit Picks products, or you want to try new yarn and knitting/crochet items at a discounted price, I think this box has a great value!
