Coastal Co. Summer 2019 Review

When you first sign up for Coastal Co., you'll fill out a few preferences to tailor your box to you. They also take your location into account, so you don't have to worry about getting a tank top in the middle of winter in the midwest.

Their info card always has a beachy photo on one side with a short intro and list of items on the other side.

O'Neill Paradise Palm Tree Tee, size medium - Listed Retail Value $30.00

This box always does a tremendous job choosing apparel that's high quality and SOFT. This O'Neill tee is 100% cotton and feels breathable and lightweight which is a must in the summer. I wouldn't normally wear this mossy green color, but it's also in the greige family, so I'll consider rocking it. The design on the front has some skinny palm trees in a row with the word "Paradise" beneath them. I probably could have changed up my sizing to a small but don't mind the looser fit and since sizing isn't standardized across brands, I always err on the side of bigger than smaller.

Honolua Surf Co Pineapple Baseball Hat - Listed Retail Value $28.00

There were a couple of instances last summer where I found myself in a sunny situation with no protection for my vulnerable scalp. I since got a couple of hats to cover up with but I could use another to maybe keep in the car when these situations arise out of nowhere. This one from Honolua Surf Co. is a flex-fit hat so there is no need to buy a certain size or have an adjustable strap. It fits surprisingly well on my pea-sized melon and is shallow enough that it doesn't cover half of my ears like many caps. It's made with 98% cotton and 2% spandex and comes in a washed black color with a small pineapple embroidered on the front. I'm not sure if this constitutes as a popular "dad hat" style, but it will keep me safe from the unrelenting sun, so I'm happy.

All Good Tinted Sunscreen (SPF 30), 3 oz. - Retail Value $19.99

I somehow never have enough sunscreen around in the summer, so this is a well-timed treat. This tinted variation from All Good is SPF 30 and sweat/water resistant which is a sweet spot for me and doesn't feel greasy AT ALL. I was worried the tint wouldn't match my pale complexion but once I rubbed it on, you couldn't see a difference in the least (and is formulated to blend into all skin tones). It sets into almost a matte powder I'd expect from a nice foundation and has no fragrance so I don't smell like a tiki drink. This is a super solid zinc sunscreen that is "reef-friendly" which means it doesn't use any chemicals like oxybenzone and octinoxate that are harmful to coral reefs. I had no idea that that was a thing, so now I feel a bit more informed and better about using sunscreen like this!

OSEA Ocean Cleanser, 1 oz.  - Estimated Retail Value $18.00

I'm familiar with OSEA skincare products and really adore them so I was happy to get their ocean cleanser. It's somewhere between a cream and an oil but is super light and smells terrific. I use a few pumps-worth and massage it into my wet face with circular motions and it feels really moisturizing while I'm using it which is a nice change to some cleansers that leave more of a squeaky-clean feeling. My face feels soft afterward instead of tight and I feel the need to use less moisturizer than usual. It even did a great job removing heavier eye makeup as well!

Aloha Tropical Zipper Tote - Retail Value $58.00

Aloha is no stranger to the Coastal Co. box and is one I look forward to receiving. Their pouches and bags are made out of a "special technical material" (which I think is Tyvek) that is splash-proof and keeps the contents dry when near the beach or pool. I've been using it to cart subscription box items to and from the office in the rain as well. This is probably the largest bag Coastal Co. has sent but since it's so lightweight and made of the thin, strong material, it packs down super small which makes it great for travel. The white and mint-colored palm design is perfect for summer while the black nylon straps and zipper keep things sleek. There's a zipper pocket in the front (that would fit a passport) and another zipper pocket inside for more valuable items like a wallet. I easily fit all of the items from this summer's box inside this bag with room to spare so it will come in handy for a kayaking trip or a day at the public pool.

Sand Straw 2-Pack with Brush - Listed Retail Value $12.00 (Buy a 3-pack for $15.00)

Reusable straws are everywhere which I can appreciate since they are one of the biggest contributors to ocean pollution. If you don't want to carry a large reusable iced coffee cup around with you, these metal straws are a lot more compact so you can pop them in your bag the next time you head to the cafe for a latte and save a few turtles while you're at it. These also can, of course, stay at home so you can enjoy your morning smoothie in any glass without using a plastic straw to sip it through. The 2-pack comes in a convenient cotton drawstring bag with a palm tree on it and includes a special brush to clean the gold and silver straws so nothing gets stuck in there.

Pirette Fragrance Oil Sample - Buy a full-size 15 ml bottle for $48.00

I've gotten this fragrance oil sample once or twice in the past and it's always a nice treat. Who knew that fresh green coconut, surf wax, and sunscreen would make such a winning combination of scents?

Slippa Round Palm Towel

Slippa Co. Round Palm Towel - Listed Retail Value $59.00

Would you believe that I've never gotten a "roundie" in a subscription box before now? These are always a favorite item in various summer boxes each year and here they've chosen one from Slippa Co. with a pretty sand and palm design on it trimmed in white fringe. As you can see in the photos, this baby is quite large and measures five feet in diameter. I recently went to a backyard BBQ and this made a splendid seating choice on the grass in lieu of my usual ugly moving blanket option. It's made from a micro-poly blend and is soft and absorbent so you can use it to dry off with as well as a beach blanket. It's certainly large enough to fit a friend or two as well.

Verdict: The summer Coastal Co. box came full of so many useful staple items for the season. They delivered quality brands and functional products that anyone can use whether they're in Hawaii or Pennsylvania. I think the roundie towel, tote, straws, sunscreen, and cleanser are my faves this time, but that hat will be getting some use as well. Really, just about everything in this box is pretty awesome! The total retail value of this box is $224.99 which is more than double the $103.95 cost.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today?  Yes, summer boxes are shipping now! Yours may be slightly different based on your preferences and location though.

Seasonal Schedule

Value Breakdown: At $103.95 ($99.00 + $4.95 shipping) for this box, here's what you're paying for each item:

  • Tee: $13.86
  • Hat: $12.94
  • Sunscreen: $9.24
  • Cleanser: $8.32
  • Tote: $26.80

I’m so tempted to get this box, but I already got my FabFitFun summer box and I got the current Sunday Riley box so this might be product overload. But I feel like I could use every item in this box, although I do already have several towels, hats and tote bags. But none are as cute as these!

I am really happy with this box. I know it’s pricey but I always feel like I’m getting quality brands instead of cheaper collaborations. I’m really happy to get the tote but everything in this box will be used and I can’t say that for a lot of other boxes.

I like all these items but the prices seem way inflated to me.. could never justify spending that much for this box. Great review though!

Thank you, Nina!

Great review. Many winners in this box but the tee and the hat are a real miss for me and make up a big chunk of the value.

Apparently they make up $40 worth of value! You can now get a smaller box without the hat and shirt for only $59! Interesting…

Leah

How can I go about getting the smaller box?

Cheryl Ramsay

I think 50 dollars is in most peoples budget. I just ordered the 59.box – 10% discount. I live in San Diego, where these are necessities.

Thanks, BG! 🙂
