Cairn June 2019 "Take It to Go" Review

As always, this month's box includes a copy of Cairn Scout, which gives the lowdown on the month's products, subscriber perks, and more. I love that this issue gives a friendly reminder of the "leave no trace" concept. The term is tossed around a lot on the trails, but many people don't fully live by it. A big one that's easy to forget is leaving the natural objects that you find! They also give tips on remaining present in your outdoor experience and remind you to share photos of your Cairn gear on social media.

Fozzils SnapFold Solo Pack - Retail Value $14.99 (Found in grey here)

Cairn has a reputation of hookin' it up with lightweight, reusable food storage. I feel so seen! Gotta stay fueled up on the trail, you know? This set is "absurdly light," as the Fozzils website says; the entire trio weighs 4 oz. or 113 g.

Here are two of the three pieces. They're each a slightly different size, loosely translating to plate, bowl, and cup-size, but really you can use any of the three unsnapped as a plate-like surface, and any of them snapped up as a bowl or cup.

Here's what a snapped corner looks like close-up.

And, here you can see there are faint measurement indications like you would see on a Nalgene. To be honest, my husband and I usually eat our meals out of our camp pots, so I'm not sure how often we will use this set, but it can't hurt to throw in one of our packs on our next backpacking trip and see how it might come in handy, even just as a clean, dry surface for anything random we might want it for.

Humangear GoToob+ 3-Pack Medium - Estimated Value $25.47

Now these are some well-thought-out travel tubes! They're soft silicone so you can squeeze out every last drop of whatever you have stored in there. The first thing that comes to mind for me is homemade sunscreen, but obviously, the possibilities are endless. You could even store condiments in them if that's your thing!

I want to note that on the Humangear site, these tubes are sold individually rather than as a set as they arrived in my Cairn subscription, but 3 of this Medium size add up to $25.47.

I like that the lid completely removes from the tube so you can thoroughly clean it. I also appreciate the twist-off squeeze lid. It's nice to have the option but not be obligated to squirt out your contents ketchup-style.

And, the best feature is this locking system. It's pretty intuitive and user-friendly to function.

Kate's Real Food Bivy Bar, Lemon Coconut - Retail Value $2.99

The fuel I found in this month's Cairn delivery is this lemon coconut bar from Kate's Real Food. It's made up of all sorts of awesome organic ingredients. You can see that it doesn't have a ton of protein, but it also isn't crazy sugary, either.

It definitely has a lemony punch, paired with a nice texture and a hint of crunch. I ate a portion of this bar and saved the rest for later. Can't wait to sink my teeth back into it!

Verdict: I was delighted by each item in this month's Cairn package! The item I think I'll get the most use out of is the reusable tubes. I got out of the habit of using tubes like that after multiple messy leaks, but these ones offer some great design, affording me the chance to go all the more green in my adventures and travels.

This box costs $29.95, which includes free shipping, and the contents add up to $43.45. I'm always happy with the deal I get from Cairn!

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? Based on their subscription model, your items may vary based on your survey responses and boxes you have received in the past.

Check out our review of the Hammock Collection welcome box to see what will be included.

Value Breakdown: This box cost $29.95 + free US shipping, but I estimate it contained $43.45 worth of product. Here’s what you are paying approximately per item:

  • SnapFold Plate/Bowl Set: $10.33
  • GoToob+ Travel Tubes: $17.56
  • Kate's Real Food Bar: $2.06

Alternatively, each of the 3 items has an average cost of $9.98.

Hi there, I'm Christen. I am all sorts of things:

🌳 a writer who loves to convey feeling

🌲 a mother who wants to have just as much fun as my kids do

🌳 an outdoors-lover who's achieved #1000hoursoutside with my family

🌲 a low-maintenance self-carer

🌳 a general hungry person with an unstoppable sweet tooth

You'll find me collecting stationery and squirreling away stickers, riding bikes and swimming with my family, creating outfits in colors and silhouettes that make me feel amazing, wearing big earrings, drinking beer and asking my husband to feed me harmonies to sing, taking my vitamins, living for dancing to live music, roping everyone into a craft, being human and vulnerable, and celebrating the phenomenon of being alive.

...and doing it all with energy, delight, and jokes along the way.

I love my fozzil plates and use them all the time when camping but I don’t see the value in the rest of the items. This was a weak month.

It’s interesting you should say that because I was actually thinking the Fozzil plates were of least value to me out of the 3 items I received—but that’s probably just because I already have a trail eating routine that works well for me. For someone who already has a solution for carrying liquids and lotions, or who knows they don’t have the need for them, I can see how the tubes wouldn’t seem like a great item to receive. I think that’s often the case with Cairn boxes! Sometimes you just end up with things you don’t need, even if they are cool and of nice quality. 🙂

They sell the sets on their site, in the color choice box it’s at the bottom with each color listed. They’re 21.99 for 3.
