June 2019 Birchbox 'Fun in the Sun' Curated Box Review #2

This month came with a little folded card explaining the Birchbox philosophy of 'you time'.

Each box comes with a card detailing the items included and some tips on how to use them.

Finally, included is a card promoting their loyalty program.

Let's dive into our items!

Coola Classic Body Sunscreen in Tropical Coconut, 0.34 fl oz - Estimated Value $2.18 (Buy a full size 5 oz for $32.00)

It is no secret that I love Coola. I am a sunscreen freak and this brand makes it not only wearable, but also cool! This tube contains their classic SPF30 formula with a beachy coconut scent. It glides on your skin and absorbs super easily, leaving your face prepped for makeup. If you have yet to find a lightweight sunscreen you love, give this brand a try!

Touch in Sol No Poreblem Priming Water, 0.2 fl oz - Estimated Value $4.55 (Buy a full size 1.01 oz for $23.00)

This liquid primer is lightweight and because it is so thin, it glides onto skin effortlessly. It smells faintly of roses, which I am 100% here for! Use this before your makeup to smooth your skin and minimize your pores. I haven't been wearing foundation this season, but I still loved the dewy look this formula gave me, even on bare skin. I am not sure this would beat out some of my other primers, but in summer its lightweight formulation certainly gives it some edge over the competition.

Oribe Balm d’Or Heat Styling Shield, 0.5 fl oz – Estimated Value $6.32 (Buy a full size 3.4 oz for $43.00)

This product is a little beyond me because I do not heat style my hair and it is meant to be used before any of your hot tools to give your hair some heat protection. What I can say is that it smells great and absolutely gave my hair a little luster. Like most similar creams, it had a smoothing effect and helped with flyaways. I tried it on my dry hair and combed it onto my strands with my fingers. Even if you don't heat style this can still be useful!

No4 Jour d’automne Sugar Texturizing Spray, 1 fl oz - Estimated Value $4.49 (but a full size 4.9 oz for $22.00)

I have seen quite a few beachy salt sprays with summer quickly approaching, but I have never gotten a SUGAR texture spray! This could be an incredible alternative for those of you who might avoid salt because it dries out strands and can mess with your (likely expensive) hair color. The texture I got from this sugar spray was not as dramatic as salt, but it still looked great and my hair had much more sheen with the sugar.

Benefit Cosmetics They’re Real Mascara, 3 g - Estimated Value $8.82 (but a full size 8.5 g for $25.00)

This is one of my favorite mascaras! It somehow manages to coat every lash without clumping and it stays put all day without smudging or fading down under my eye. My lashes also stay flexible with this formula and don't dry out over time. I am always happy to add one of my fave products to my mini travel sized collection!

Jouer Cosmetics Long-Wear Lip Topper, 5.9 ml - FULL SIZE! Retail Value $16.00

I fully expected to hate this product. It looked super brown and I have not had luck with matte shimmer topcoats in the past because they feel like vanish on my lips. I have to eat my words because I love this stuff. I applied it to my bare lips on top of a clear balm (to avoid the matte finish!) and instead of being too brown it was actually a very wearable metallic flecked bronze. It would work really well over a ton of lippies, but I love the look it has over bare lips.

A rather heavy-handed swatch!

Verdict: This box has an approximate value of $42.36, which is good for a $15 box! My favorite boxes always seem to have a mix of old favorites and new exciting products. I am more than happy to get more Coola sunscreen and Benefit mascara. My favorite newbie would have to be that Jouer lip topper, but I also really liked the sugar spray and pore priming water. The Oribe product is not specifically something I would ever buy because I don't heat style, but I still found it super useful. All in all, I really liked this box a lot!

I love natural/vegan beauty products, Korean skincare, unique jewelry, and weird candies from far away places. When I am not waiting for my next exciting box you can find me painting or taking photographs of interesting people. I never leave home without pug hair somewhere on my shirt and a bold lipstick on my smile.

I wouldn’t resub to BB however I do buy their single boxes especially with a code or % off they have decent stuff not enough for $15.00 a month but their brands have improved ! Love the box too 😍

Does anyone know if this box is available to purchase? I can’t find it in the Birchbox shop and I forgot to look when I chose my customization this month (I chose a different box but want this one, as well)

Hi Megan! I’m curious, what skin type do you have? Just wondering because I have fairly oily skin, and I tried a sample of that priming water (which I received in an Ipsy bag), and it was a tad too much for my skin. 🙁 It actually felt fairly moisturizing, but I don’t think my skin could handle both that primer and a moisturizer at the same time. My makeup did apply fine over it, but my face both felt and looked semi-greasy the whole time I used it (I did finish the sample because hated to waste it, and I can live with having to blot my face a few extra times throughout the day. lol). I did receive the Touch in Sol Priming Essence in my Boxyluxe, and I’m curious to see if it’s just like the priming water.

Hey Luna! I am DRY. Like, bathe me in oil dry. Year round. That is likely why it absorbed so easily for me, though I can see it being less ideal for someone with oilier skin. I thought this was thinner than the one I received in my Boxy but not in a super dramatic way.

Thanks for comparing the two primers Megan. 🙂 Ironically, the thicker primers seem to work great for my skin, so hopefully the essence primer will work better for me than the priming water. 🙂

MJ

I have normal to dry skin. I use a sunscreen, serum and then this primer (with some liquid bronzer added) and no moisturizer. I could see how this would feel a bit greasy for someone with oily skin.

If I get any more samples of this, I think I’ll use it on no makeup days when I don’t stay home. I thought it did a great job of making my skin feel moisturized, and hopefully with no makeup, my skin will just have a nice glowy sheen, rather than a greasy look since I’ve found wearing makeup can sometimes enhance the greasy look on me (which is weird since I wear powder makeup. Lol).

Luna

btw, I really wish they would put that sample in a different container, because since it’s so thin (well, appropriately water-like), it would almost just pour out of the tube, and I always ended up getting more than I needed out of it. I probably wasted about a total of two uses worth, but I guess since it didn’t work the best for my skin, then that was okay… but the not-wanting-to-waste-product part of me always twitched a little when that would happen. lol

The box is adorable. But not adorable enough for me to subscribe. But it really is adorable.

When did Birchbox switch to the great drawer boxes they have been using in England? Love them.

Luna

I think this is their first time! I’ve always adored the drawer boxes that their U.K. subscription has, and always wished they would do that for the U.S. subs. I’m so happy they finally gave us a shot at it. 🙂

I love that style box and would seriously consider re-subbing if they continue with those boxes. I have a couple GB drawer style boxes and use them for all kinds of things.
