June 2019 Birchbox 'Fountain of Youth' Curated Box #1 Review

This month came with a little folded card explaining the Birchbox philosophy of 'you time'.

Then, there's a card explaining their loyalty program.

You'll also get a card with a self-care checklist on one side and details of the included items on the other.

Oribe Supershine Moisturizing Cream, 0.5 oz. - Estimated Retail Value $5.20 (Buy a full-size 5 oz. for $52.00)

Once again, Oribe has done my finicky hair right with this moisturizing cream. I used just a small amount of it and combed it through towel-dried hair after my shower and then blow-dried as usual. While I still have my little frizzies, this made my hair incredibly soft and it smells so wonderful too!

Peter Thomas Roth Anti-Aging Cleansing Gel, 1 oz. - Estimated Retail Value $4.47 (Buy a full size 8.5 oz. for $38.00)

Many years ago, when I used to never actually wash my face (GASP) I decided I needed to start and shyly slinked into Sephora. I remember the nice woman there loading me up with samples of cleansers to try and Peter Thomas Roth was one of them. It wasn't this particular one, but for some reason, he has stuck in my head as a formative cleanser brand. I was surprised at how delicious this smells (due to the grapefruit, peach, lime, and lemon extracts) and it made my cleansing experience that much more enjoyable. My face feels intensely clean after using this and I just adore it!

Murad Retinol Youth Renewal Serum, 0.17 oz. - Estimated Retail Value $12.50 (Buy a 0.33 oz. for $25.00)

This same serum came in one of the other curated boxes this month and I'm not mad at it. This is a great addition to the "Fountain of Youth" theme for this box and since I'm not physically getting any younger, I'm always looking to improve my skin. While I've always heard that retinol is great for skin, I don't know too much about it. I happened to find this article on Allure's website that goes over a lot of myths. Apparently, Murad's Youth Renewal Serum contains a gentler version called retinyl propionate which is less irritating. Score!

Specific Beauty Advanced Dark Spot Corrector Pads, 30 pads - Estimated Retail Value $19.00 (Buy full size 90 pads for $57.00)

I know it's not the same thing but these corrector pads bring me back to my pre-teen years of using Oxy pads. There is virtually no scent to these pads whatsoever and they really didn't feel like much as I swept one across my face. The package states that it's formulated to help even skin tone with ingredients like green tea leaf extract, bearberry leaf extract, and licorice root extract among other things. These didn't wow me in function or ritual but prolonged use is most likely needed to see results. I can see these being great for travel instead of bringing a bottle of something that you'd have to soak on a cotton pad, so that's a plus.

Philosophy Ultimate Miracle Worker Fix Eye Fill & Firm Treatment, 0.1 oz. - Estimated Retail Value $13.60 (Buy full size 0.5 oz. for $68.00)

Such a tiny bottle and yet plenty of product to pat around my eyes in the evening and when I wake up for a handful of applications. I love the silky feel of this eye cream and it feels extremely moisturizing. Eye creams are an essential part of an anti-aging skincare routine and I really need to get on board. Perhaps this one will motivate me!

Marcelle Xtension Plus Curl Mascara, 0.15 oz. - Buy full size for $12.95

With mascara, the formula is important of course, but the wand also makes all the difference. The simple curve of this one really helps apply the deep black color to my lashes with ease and I love the short bristles. I didn't find it to be particularly volumizing but it certainly delivered the length that it promised. It also does so with virtually no messy clumps and gives my lashes a clean yet polished look. Definitely a new go-to for my travel makeup bag!

Verdict: Birchbox's curated "Fountain of Youth" box delivered some great products to explore! I am over the moon about the cleanser, hair cream, and mascara, but everything will get used without a doubt.

I have to say, I’ve been really let down by the Birchboxes, themselves, lately – BUT: I’m hanging in there for now, because their customer service has been consistently awesome, and because I order stuff from them as well as just the sub box, that counts even more.

TBH, I know people love IpsyCare, but I’ve never had them respond to any request/complaint with anything besides a cheerful, useless, ‘just keep on waiting for the box we lost’ or ‘try the product you’re allergic to and I’m sure it’ll all work out! 🙂 🙂 🙂 ‘ Allure is… allure, enough said. Even Beautyfix/Dermstore has been really obnoxiously unhelpful (but polite!) regarding missing orders – and I don’t just mean sub boxes, but other products.

Birchbox’s team has been amazing : not once did I get ‘aww, that’s too bad! I wish there was something we could do 🙁 ” or “I’m sure if you give it 8 more weeks, it’ll all work itself out! 🙂 ‘ They’ve responded within a day or less, replaced damaged or incomplete orders immediately, and reshipped missing boxes ASAP, sometimes with little extras.

So, yeah, BB was totally on my cut list after the last few boxes, but because I’m a sucker for good customer service, I’m hanging in a while longer.

Agreed! I only subbed for a month with BB to try it out. During that time I emailed customer service about my box because it just did not seem like it was gonna arrive, so they sent me a new box! When that tracking didn’t work I emailed them again and lo and behold, I got another box sent! All 3 boxes ended up arriving so tbh I feel guilty since I technically played the system but I was so amazed by how nice all the reps I spoke to were.

I don’t think you played the system. 🙂 Since you thought your boxes weren’t arriving due to shipping issues, I think you were justified in reaching out to them, and I think it’s awesome they went above & beyond by shipping you out a new box right away rather than stating to give it a few more days to see what happens. The same happened to me with Glossybox last year. My box seemed lost in transit (by the end of the month my tracking never moved), so I emailed them, and they shipped me out a new box with express shipping, and wouldn’t you know it, the next day my original box arrived. I was going to let them know to hold off on the replacement, but I had already received a shipping email, so I let it go. I felt a tad guilty receiving two boxes while having only paid for one, but at the same time I’m fairly lenient when it comes to not emailing boxes if I get a leaked, damaged, or missing product in my boxes (including a few instances from Glossybox), so I’m okay with letting things roll in my favor once in a while. 🙂

I decided not to pick anything for May because I was meh on everything, and I paid dearly for it. (Multiple repeat items, almost all hair care, some of the samples with the same purpose.) So I picked this box for June, since it felt least like a waste of my money, lol. I like it, but I definitely got FOMO about the other boxes.

Birchbox is going to be my next cut. They promised to up their game when they raised their prices and I haven’t seen a difference yet. Same minuscule sizes in the same brands as usual.

Lori

Same. My term finished in May and no FOMO whatsoever. Where’s all the improvements they promised???

How is the oribe sample valued at almost half of what the full size retails for when it’s a tenth of the size..?

Marne Orenich

Wow- hmm. No idea what I did here. Thanks for pointing out my flub! I’ve updated the estimated value. 🙂

Based on the 1.7 oz size of the Oribe cream selling for ß19.50, the .5 oz size has an RV of $5.89.

Nikki

Yea it’s worth like 5.20 but stuff happens, they are constantly uploading I would probably make way more mistakes than that myself lol
