The Duckling Gets a Cookie!? by Mo Willems - Retail Value $16.99 (found here for $12.99)

I've seen these pigeon books around, and I know there are people who really like the series. I've only read one other Pigeon Series book before, so they're still relatively new to me. Unfortunately, I have to say that I didn't really care for this book. Basically, a little duckling asks politely for a cookie and gets one. Then, the pigeon comes along and starts getting angry and upset that the duckling got a cookie just by asking for one when he never gets a cookie and he asks for them all the time. Frankly, he throws a tantrum. Then, the little duckling says that he got it to give to the pigeon, who is surprised and thanks the duckling. I understand it's meant to show how the pigeon had a lot to learn about manners and thoughtfulness, but I think that might be lost a little on my 3-year-old, who may just see someone upset about not having a cookie, and who gets one after throwing a fit about it. It seems cute, but I'll probably donate this or pass it along.

The Giant Jumperee by Julia Donaldson - Retail Value $17.99 (found here for $12.60)

I picked this book because it had a ton of 5-star ratings and I thought it sounded familiar. This book is really cute - it's about a loud, scary voice from inside Rabbit's burrow scares off animal after animal by claiming to be the "Giant Jumperee." He says he will sting them like a bee, that he's taller than a tree, etc. until they all run off for help from another animal. Finally, the elephant asks the Mama Frog for help. Mama Frog's not scared of the Jumperee and tells it to come out - revealing that it's actually baby frog playing a prank on all of them. It's very repetitive, every page or two follows the exact same pattern of language, which can get a little old to me but my son loves being able to recite it along with me.

The Verdict: Well, one of the two books from my April Amazon Prime Books Kids box is a solid winner for our family. I'll probably pass along or even return the Duckling book - Amazon makes returns easy and you can return one of the books in these boxes for half the cost of the box (the box shows up in your order history as the individual books at prices that add up to the $19.99 cost of the subscription). I chose the 3-5-year-old option for my 3-year-old. I really appreciate that I get an email before it ships so I can swap out and select which two books to get each time, which definitely maximizes the chances of getting books we'll love. Gideon looks forward to it, too, because we'll have a fun, fresh, new story for bedtime! For $19.99 a month plus free Prime shipping, we received two books with a total value of $34.98.

To Wrap Up:

Can you get this box if you sign up today? I'm not sure of exactly when Amazon swaps out their selection choices for the month, but if you sign up today you should get the selections for June.

Value Breakdown: This box costs $19.99 which means you are paying approximately the following per item:

  • Duckling Gets a Cookie: $9.71
  • the Giant Jumperee: $10.28

Just subscribed for my *almost* 2 year old! We are looking forward to have some new books in the bed time rotation too. I love that this subscription lets up choose to get the box every 2 or 3 months so we don’t get overloaded with books!
