VetPet Box is a subscription for dogs or cats with toys, treats, and other supplies curated by veterinarians. Choose from boxes for single or multiple cats and you can also input allergy information. Choose from boxes for petite (up to 15 pounds), small (15-30 pounds), medium (31-50 pounds), large (51-100 pounds) or giant (100+ pounds) and there are also options to select for heavy chewers and dogs with food allergies. This is a review of the large dog box for heavy chewers and dogs with food allergies. My dog, Nyx, is an 84-pound Rottweiler who is definitely a power chewer; she also has inflammatory bowel disease so we avoid pretty much all grains and most animal proteins.
VetPet Box sent us this box at no charge for a review. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes.)

VetPet Box Dog May 2019 Review
Please note: This subscription is somewhat customized based on preferences you select when you sign up. So, what you’ll see below are treats for a food-sensitive dog and toys for a heavy chewer:
Included was an information card with more information about the items in the box. Note: there are some variations based on sign-up preferences so you will not receive every item on the card.
And the last piece of literature was this educational brochure. There is always good information in there about a particular doggie-related health topic. (This is considered one of the benefits of paying for a subscription so the content is not reproduced here.) This month the information related to ear infections and keeping the ears clean. Nyx doesn’t really have this problem, but my past Rottweiler did, so I know it is a challenge.
There was also some product literature.
Yak Milk Dog Chews by PeaksNPaws (size l/g) – Retail Value $9.99
This is a new brand for us, although yak milk treats and chews are somewhat trendy in dog subscription boxes these days. I haven’t yet given this to Nyx because I got some treats in a dog box a few days before this arrived that I’m testing out to see their effect on her GI tract and we only do one new item at a time due to her particular issues. This is grain free and free of meat proteins as it is mostly dairy (yak’s milk and cow’s milk) with a bit of salt and lime juice. But I am fairly certain she will love it and it will be a challenge taking it away from her (I never let her eat something like this in one sitting).
Epi-Otic Advanced Ear Cleaner by Virbac (4 fl oz) – Retail Value $9.93
I actually already have a huge bottle of this because we were using it on Mr. Kitty (who had recurrent ear infections and general buildup of gunk in his ears due to being immune suppressed) before he passed away. You can turn the bottle over and distribute a lot into an animal’s ear, or if the problem is mild, put a little on a Q-Tip and gently wipe this to clean things up. I will hang onto this in case someone else needs ear cleaning because I know it is an effective product.
Orbee Double-Tuff by Planet Dog (size L) – Retail Value $13.99
This is supposedly mint-scented but I can’t tell. I guess dogs can? Anyway, you can stuff treats in here or, what we do with Nyx is add peanut butter. This is a bit more rubbery-feeling than a KONG so it bounces, but the bounce is somewhat unpredictable due to the shape. This is holding up pretty well so far.
Tootiez Hedgehog by Outward Hound (m/l) – Retail Value $9.99
There is some potty humor involved with the name of this (“tootiez” means exactly what you think it does). Honestly, I thought it was pretty funny, but not so much because of the potty humor and more because of how Nyx reacted to it. She absolutely loved the sound but she growled and growled at this toy and also barked at it a few times and it was super funny to watch her with it. She thought this was great.
Le Petit Treats Quiche Lorraine – Retail Value $9.99
These are grain free, which is great. However, they do contain bacon so I will have to pass them along to another dog to enjoy since Nyx can’t have pork. I do have good things to say about this brand, though. Nyx loves their Pate and Crème de Menthe treats (which are meat-free as well as grain-free). Anyway, this seems to be a good brand and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it, especially for grain-sensitive dogs.
This was the funniest toy I’ve seen Nyx play with for a while. She absolutely loved the noise it makes. But she also growled at it, and flat-out barked a couple of times as well, which is something I have never seen her do before.
Verdict: I calculated a value of $53.89 for May’s VetPet Box. That’s a little above the month-to-month cost of the box, but I thought the curation was good. The toys were definitely appropriate for a heavy chewer and I know the health item is a good product since I have used it in the past. The treats and chew are made from high-quality ingredients and we’ve definitely had good luck with that brand of treats in the past. Plus, I find this box averages out over time; last month had a much higher value.
To Wrap Up:
Can you still get this box if you sign up today? Due to customization (dog size/chewing habits/dietary issues), boxes may vary from month-to-month. New subscribers typically receive an introductory box first. However, if you’d like to get a repeat of a past box, contact Vet Pet Box – if your dog has major dental issues, as an example, they want you to be able to get the dental health box and the items within more than once if it will be useful to you. And the same goes for any other theme.
Value Breakdown: At $49/month for this box, you are paying approximately the following per item:
- Yak milk chew $9.08
- Ear cleaner $9.03
- Double tuff toy $12.72
- Tootiez toy $9.08
- Treats $9.08
