Vegan Cuts Beauty April 2019 - Box Review Front

Vegancuts Beauty Box
4.3 overall rating
40 Ratings | 8 Reviews

The Vegan Cuts Beauty Box is a monthly beauty and makeup subscription box. All of their products are vegan (and they tend to be natural, too). They also typically include a nice mix of full-size and sample beauty items. Vegan Cuts also offers a monthly Snack Box and quarterly Makeup Box.

This review is of the $22.95 a month Vegan Cuts Beauty Box.

Vegan Cuts Beauty April 2019 - Organza Top

Vegan Cuts sends a single package to subscribers who get both the beauty and snack boxes. The beauty items are separated into a little bag. (If you do not get the snack box, I don’t think you get the little bag.)

This box was sent to us at no cost for review. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes.)

Vegan Cuts Beauty Box April 2019 Review

The Vegan Cuts Beauty Box usually contains a variety of hair care, skincare, and bath and body products. There’s often one makeup product, as well:

Each Vegan Cuts Beauty Box comes with an information card detailing the items for that month.

Vegan Cuts Beauty April 2019 - Soap Top

Herban Clay Facial Cleansing Bar – Retail Value $12.50

At first, I thought we had only received a small sample size, but based on the manufacturer’s website, this is actually the full-sized product. I guess facial cleansers don’t need to be very big to last a long time. This lathered really well and left my face squeaky clean. I am not sure how I feel about bar cleansers for the face, but if you are concerned about the environmental impact of excessive packaging, this is a nice solution and it does work. (Note: I did not try to remove makeup with this.)

Vegan Cuts Beauty April 2019 - Toner Top

Annmarie Skin Rosemary Toning Mist (1 fl oz) – Estimated Value $22.11 (buy 50 mL for $33)

This is marketed towards oily skin (which I have). It has willow bark extract, which is a natural source of salicylic acid, so it should be good at preventing breakouts. The product page says you can also use it near the roots of your hair. I actually found this to be a little harsh, which is surprising since it doesn’t contain alcohol.

Vegan Cuts Beauty April 2019 - Oil Top

Rosy Organic Apricot Oil – Listed Value $5 (buy 1 fl oz for $28)

This did not have size information so I’m using the value from the information card. This is a source of several antioxidants as well as omega-6 and -9 fatty acids, and it is supposed to help calm inflammation. I think you would have to use it a long time to see those benefits, but you don’t need much at once, so there is probably enough here to find out. This can also be used on the hair and, personally, I think it is a better fit for me there. I do like the idea of multi-use products because if it doesn’t work for you one way, it might work for you a different way.

Vegan Cuts Beauty April 2019 - Sunscreen Top

Goddess Garden Organics Natural Facial Sunscreen Lotion (1 oz) – Estimated Value $4.41 (buy 3.4 oz for $14.99)

The primary SPF-providing ingredient here is zinc oxide. I am all about mineral sunscreens as I have somewhat sensitive skin when it comes to chemical sunscreens. This one can leave white streaks on the skin (I am very pale so it may be worse on people with darker skin) but under makeup, it works well.

Vegan Cuts Beauty April 2019 - Moisturizer Top

Zatik Glow Moisture Cream (1.7 fl oz) – Retail Value $28

I feel like I have seen this brand somewhere before (maybe Yuzen or a Whole Foods Beauty Bag?). Anyway, this product is new to me and it is a very lightweight moisturizer that is great for summer (plus it has lots of antioxidants from the sea buckthorn and raspberry ingredients).

Verdict: I calculated a value of $72.02 for this month’s Vegan Cuts Beauty Box. That is more than three times the $22.95 month-to-month cost of the subscription. At first I thought it was strange that there were only products for the face (and no makeup) but then I realized that this was a whole facial skincare routine with some elements that are particularly good for the upcoming warm weather, and I think that’s kind of neat and speaks to an effort with curation that I don’t always see in beauty boxes.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? If you sign up now, May will be your first box. Check out the latest spoilers here.

Value Breakdown: At $22.95 for the box, you are paying approximately the following per item:

  • Cleansing bar $3.98
  • Toner $7.05
  • Oil $1.59
  • Sunscreen $1.40
  • Moisturizer $8.92

Looks like another box that I might try, since my favorite clean beauty box Goodebeing is gone.
I’ve tried the Zatik line quite a bit in Goodebeing and one cleanser turned up in my mystery Bombay & Cedar box and have like it quite a bit.

It states in your description that if you order by end of May, you will receive this box. I thought they had a different box this month since this was April’s?

Sorry about that! I just updated the post. If you sign up during the month of May, the May box will be your first! Thanks!

I visited the Vegan Cuts site this morning and they have a combined past beauty box/food box deal for 39.95 – a nice way to try their items out. No promise what month and won’t necessarily be the same month for both. I like their snack boxes very much so I decided to try the beauty box.

You’re wise to be weary of the bar soap for cleansing your face, especially given your description of it leaving you feeling “squeaky clean”, something that is never a good sign. Whether a bar of soap or any other form of cleanser, anything that leaves that “squeaky clean” feeling is far too harsh & with continued use will undoubtedly damage the skin barrier which will then cause a myriad of problems.
The same thing can certainly happen anywhere/ everywhere on the body – a big reason that cleansers are generally preferable to soaps – but in addition to tending to be more sensitive, the face & neck are of course more consistently exposed to external stressors, making maintaining the skin barrier in those areas even more crucial.

I do see more companies offering bar soaps, though, and I wonder if it is for environmental reasons — no plastic necessary in the packaging. (Glass isn’t necessarily better because a lot of municipalities will no longer recycle glass in this country. Mine stopped taking it awhile ago.) It’s a tough balance and I know a lot of people who are interested in vegan beauty products do prefer environmentally-responsible companies.
