Universal Yums “South Korea” May 2019 Review

I have never been to South Korea, but I did have a pen pal from South Korea in elementary school that used to send little snacks; I was excited to see if I recognized anything in this month’s box! I love that I can experience a culture without even leaving my kitchen!

Universal Yums “South Korea” May 2019 - Official Yum Awards Top

Upon opening the box, you are greeted with a large, colorful map of South Korea with fun facts and clip art. On the back of the map, you will find “The Official Yum Awards” sheet. This chart is where you are able to rank each snack and post on your social media page for a chance to win more snacks! There is also a secret puzzle and a game to play!

Let’s experience South Korea!

Tteokbokki Snacks - Retail Value $2.00

Whoa! These sweet and spicy wheat snacks are crunchy and delicious!! They have a slight honey barbeque flavor at first and then pack a little spicy punch! This was one of my families favorites!

These chewy chocolate and marshmallow pies feature a very strong green tea flavor. We would have enjoyed them a lot more if the green tea had been omitted. You can’t go wrong with chocolate and marshmallow, but unless you are a fan of green tea, you probably won’t enjoy these.

I am in love with these chocolate and almond coated biscuit sticks! They are so tasty and crunchy, with the perfect amount of sweetness. I only wish there were more!

Sweet and Sour Chewy Strawberry Flavored Chews

Here we have another family favorite! These little chews are chewy and sweet with the perfect zing of sour! They are sort of like a starburst, but with a stronger, more natural strawberry flavor. Sooo tasty!

These salty and flavorful soy sauce rice crackers are really good! They made for an excellent savory snack after all of our sweet treats.

Cosmos Choco Corn

These chocolate and coconut flavored corn puffs taste like an upscale version of a coco puff with coconut. They were very airy and light and really good. They do look slightly unfortunate though: my son said these looked like cat poop.

These delicate sweet biscuits are filled with mascarpone cream and are absolutely divine! They have a perfect balance of sweet and salty but are so fragile, they arrived broken. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t discriminate and ate every last crumb, but it would have been nice to experience a full biscuit!

We are big fans of kettle chips, and these ones were awesome! They were super crunchy, and packed with a “real” cheddar cheese flavor! My boys loved these and wanted more!

The next treat we tried was this chocolate covered cookie with blueberry jam filling. I’m not quite sure how I felt about it, there just seemed to be too many flavors going on. My kids thought they were okay but didn’t ask to have another.

These chocolate and hazelnut cream filled wafers are light and airy and delicate. They taste similar to a couple of other snacks in this box, which I definitely enjoy! And the packaging is so pretty!

Hot Gangjung Chicken Snack

Now, this is my favorite snack!! I was a little apprehensive because it says “contains meat,” but I am so glad I gave these a chance. They look like popcorn chicken and taste like a sweet and sour crispy chicken chip. You have to try these!!

These tangerine flavored gummies remind me of an orange slice candy. They are soft and vibrant and sweet. My kids liked these, but they weren't my favorite.

Universal Yums “South Korea” May 2019 - Mammos Rice Candy Top Universal Yums “South Korea” May 2019 - Mammos Rice Candy Opened Top

Mammos Rice Candy

This candy is sooo strange. It is slightly sweet yet savory in a hard candy. I did not like this one bit. My son tried it and spit it out. It was fun to try something so different, but I will be giving the other candies away.

The Verdict: This month’s Universal Yums box was a really good one! They do such a great job at making receiving this box an entire experience. We learned so much about South Korea and loved tasting snacks that they eat across the world. My kids were just asking when this box was going to come, so they definitely look forward to it each month. We can’t wait to see where the next box will come from, especially because the clue says it involves bacon!!!

Score card picks:

  • Best Yum: Hot Gangjung Chicken Snack
  • Runner-up: Almond Pepero
  • Worst Yum: Mammos Rice Candy
  • Most Unusual: Mammos Rice Candy

We got the Super Yum Box for the first time this month (we have 5 people in our family who all want a try) and everyone really liked everything so far. I have to say, you didn’t miss much by not getting the cola chips, those were so weird and strange. We were happy to have gotten to the opportunity to try the weirdness, but eeeg, its probably the first bag of chips that I have had to throw away in my house that still had chips in it!!
