Toby’s Treasure Box April 2019 Review
Toby’s Treasure Box can vary a lot from subscriber to subscriber depending on what parameters you select during sign-up. But let’s see what they sent for a large-breed dog with IBD (who can’t have grains, soy, chicken, pork, beef, turkey, or duck):
Because this box is customized, you won’t receive a traditional information card. They do send out collectible cards, of which I’ve shown one above (I didn’t photograph all of them since part of the value in the subscription is the information on the cards). You’ll receive a binder for your cards after your 8th box, or you can opt out of receiving the cards if you are concerned about the environmental impact. These may contain breed profiles, training tips, or health and wellness information.
Cloud Star Tricky Trainers, Cheddar (5 oz) – Retail Value $5.95 (found here for $5.06)
This is the same company that makes Buddy Biscuits, which my cats love. These are small, semi-moist treats that are made in the United States. They have some cheese but are free of corn, wheat, soy, and most animal proteins (they do have a bit of gelatin but that is usually pretty well-purified and free of allergens). Nyx hasn’t had these yet because I let her try some of the other ones (see below) and we only do new treats sparingly so if there is an issue, we can isolate the source of the problem. These do have barley, which is not ideal for Nyx, but she has done well with some other surprising carbohydrate sources, so I’m willing to give them a go.
Whimzees (1 large stick) – Buy 7 for $17.99 (found here for $14.99)
This is grain free and free of animal proteins so Nyx can have it! But, as per the treats above, I am holding off on giving it to her so as to not introduce too many new things to her system at once. (It is really challenging, feeding a dog with inflammatory bowel disease.) If it works for her, though, these are available through several online retailers and I don’t mind the cost because there are so few things she can have that I am happy just to find one.
Nutrisource Soft and Tender Treats with Lamb (6 oz) – Retail Value $5.99 (found here for $4.39)
These have barley, rice, and oat ingredients so they are not ideal for Nyx, but they are small so I am hoping that if she has one or two at a time, there won’t be a problem. She did gobble them up immediately and so far, so good. We’ll try another few in a day or so and go from there. I don’t think she has ever had lamb (unless there are lamb treats I gave her in the past and forgot about, which is a distinct possibility) so that maybe counts as a novel protein for her.
Rugged Rubber Grenade by Tuffy (medium) – Retail Value $12.99
Nyx liked the string best here, which came as no surprise to me. I am going to have to cut it off eventually, but am hoping she’ll stay interested in the rubber part if I put some peanut butter in the grooves. This is a new brand for us.
The Thunder Boom without Bully Stick (10”) – Retail Value $16.99
This is sold by Toby’s Treasure Box and is meant for aggressive chewers. (I think it is kind of funny we got two explosives-themed toys this month.) These come with or without a bully stick; this one is without since Nyx can’t have beef. Nyx was interested in the rope at first, but once she figured out this squeaks, she chewed on the dynamite stick part quite a lot. This was also durable enough to tug on (with her holding the other end).
Here are some pictures of Nyx with the TTBoom toy. She really had fun with this, but the pictures were kind of repetitive, so there aren’t as many as usual.
Verdict: I calculated a value of $41.92 for the April 2019 Toby’s Treasure Box not including the Whimzees stick which isn’t sold individually, but since the box is $33, that is basically just an extra bonus. Although I’m happy that the treats had no wheat, corn, or soy, I’m a little disappointed that they both did have grain-based ingredients (although on the other hand, I don’t remember what I told the folks at Toby’s Treasure Box was OK for Nyx). Since Nyx has been doing well lately, I’m going to keep trying these with her anyway, to see if we can expand the range of items available for her consumption, but I’d feel a little better about chickpea/buckwheat/sweet potato-based treats rather than barley. The toys have both been pretty durable so far and I do feel OK giving her the Whimzees stick as it is mostly potato starch and cellulose.
To Wrap Up:
Can you still get this box if you sign up today? No, your first box would probably be May’s. Also, box content can vary a lot based on your dog’s profile quiz and of course Nyx’s dietary restrictions are more stringent than most.
