Our Review

I can't claim to have played Tetris when it first launched. That was back in 1985 and I hadn't quite been born yet. My memories of this game are directly tied to my oversized grey brick of a Gameboy and playing it sneakily in church. There was something so soothing about the different shapes and the concentration it took to play out a strategy and maximize the number of lines you could clear per piece before you ran out of space and had to start all over again. I remember arguing with my mom about what song we preferred to play in the background as we cleared line after line. She has always been better than me and is our family's reigning champ.

There was something so blissfully nostalgic and yet totally unexpected about this collaboration. Tetris + makeup? What?? Would it be good? Would it stay true to the heart of this iconic game? Could a video game beloved by so many and an incredible makeup brand truly have a meeting of the minds?

Well, friends, they totally did.

Tetris x ipsy Lip Gloss in 'Tetrimino', 4 g

This lovely lipgloss is as demure as this kit gets. (I figured I would start off easy!) 'Tetrimino' is a soft champagne with sparkles for days! Beautiful on its own, or over a favorite lipstick, this is an easy to love gloss. The formula is smooth, not overly sticky, and the scent is some sort of mixture of beachy coconut vibes and sunshine. All of the lip products in this collection share this scent.

Tetris x ipsy Lip Gloss in 'Matrix', 4 g

The icy-silver counterpart to the golden gloss above is 'Matrix' a flash of silver and shimmer. Like 'Tetrimino', this gloss is incredibly subtle and can be worn alone or layered. Because it is such a cool shimmer, I found that this one had a more mirror finish.

Ipsy x Tetris May 2019 makeup subscription box review lip gloss swatches

Top: Matrix, Bottom: Tetrimino

The picture doesn't really do justice to the amount of shimmer and shine these glosses have!

Tetris x ipsy Lip Balm in 'l33t ', 2.8 g

This collection comes with three lip balms. The first 'l33t' is an orange/red with a hot pink core. On the lips, it is super sheer and gives a natural flush of red, like you have been eating a cherry popsicle. The formula is very, very sheer, but super hydrating.

Tetris x ipsy Lip Balm in 'n00b ', 2.8 g

This is another incredibly subtle lip balm. The outer is a sheer beige which looks like naked lips on my face. The core is an iridescent blue shimmer which gives the lips just the smallest amount of dimension. Because this is by far the most demure item in this collection, I could see some people being underwhelmed. I personally think it is excellent for those makeup-free days where you still want to put something fun on your lips and feel fancy.

Tetris x ipsy Lip Balm in 'm4d sk1llz ', 2.8 g

Lastly, 'm4d sk1llz' is a pinkish shade that can't decide if it also wants to be purple or not. Like the other balms, it is very sheer and natural looking and has that same beachy smell. This one had the most staying power of the trio.

At this point, you are probably thinking "But Megan...where is all the COLOR?"

Buckle up!

Tetris x ipsy 'Tetris Life' Highlighter, 3.8 g

Wow. This is one metallic highlighter! I am going to admit right now that this is far too warm for me to even consider using, but that shouldn't detract from its 'WOW' factor. A true honey gold, this highlighter defines what it is to shimmer. Apply with a light touch and you are rewarded with sheer, gilded cheekbones. Applied with more drama and you have a borderline chrome level of intense reflective coverage. If you love a bold, warm, metallic highlight, this one is for you. And hey, if you are like me and think it might not work as a highlighter with your skin tone, try it out as a shadow!

Tetris x ipsy 'Game On' 6 Eyeshadow Palette, 13.5 g

This palette is everything. I want these colors on my face, in my home, in my closet, everywhere!! What a curation! There is a true mustard (Game Changer) and it works SO well with the more neutral shades of pink champagne (Game Day), rose gold (Block Party) and the matte shell (Stack It Up). Those four alone would be incredible but also included is a bold metallic moss (Game Night) and the most incredibly saturated navy (Game Over). If you read any of my beauty box reviews you know I tend to lean more towards natural makeup looks, but even I can't help but get incredibly excited by these bold shades. The pigment is fantastic and the fallout isn't bad! They all blend very easily.

From top to bottom: Game Changer (matte), Game Day, Game Night, Stack It Up (matte), Block Party, Game Over (matte).

Tetris x ipsy 'Block Party' 6 Eyeshadow Palette, 13.5 g

More color! This second palette is a little cooler than the first and is a healthy mix of wild colors and a few basics. My eye first went to the shimmery hot pink (Line Clear) and then to that bold, true purple (High Score!) They are both beautifully shimmery and pigmented. Top Out is a gorgeous metallic teal and the mercury metallic T-Spin is a dream. These bolder colors are cleverly anchored with the versatile brown and neutral (Skyline and Back-To-Back) shadows that give this palette a very well-rounded feel. Like the other palette, all of these shades have great pigment and are velvety smooth.

You can also experiment with using them wet as a liner. (The navy shade works so beautifully.) Top to Bottom: T-Spin, Game Night, Game Over, Top Out, High Score!, Line Clear

Tetris x ipsy 5 Piece Brush Set

Finally, finishing this collection is a really fun synthetic brush set. Including a variety of shaders, fluffers, and angle brushes, these are perfect for applying your next Tetris shadow look flawlessly. The handles are slightly square in shape instead of round, which makes holding them really easy and prevents them from rolling off your vanity. Each one has a different color metallic neck and iconic Tetris shapes going down the handle.

Want a closer look at the brush tips? Peep below!

Here is a closer look at the ingredients for each item!

Per a reader request (thanks Karen!), I wanted to also add some images of these shadows on my actual eye.  I am not even CLOSE to a makeup artist and while I would normally feel totally comfortable with the neutral shades on both of these palettes, I really wanted to try out some of the bold shades!

Here is a quick look I put together with the 'Game On' palette. I used 'Game Over' as a liner and used a blend of 'Game Changer' and 'Game Day' on my lid and into my crease. I did have to use a tarte shade 'Gleam' on my brow bone because I am fair and the 'Stack It Up' shade wasn't light enough for me to use here. I have a little bit of 'Game Night' in my inner eye. Mascara is BADgal BANG!

Next, I tried to create a look with the 'Block Party' palette. This one reminds me of Lisa Frank! Under my lower lash line, I have a blend of 'Line Clear' to 'High Score!'. I used 'Back-to-Back' all over my entire lid, up to my brow. My lower lid is mostly 'Top Out' with 'T-Spin' blended in towards my duct.  I used 'Skyline' (which was so pretty!) in my crease. I also have a little bit of the 'Tetris Life' highlighter on my upper cheek. These were really fun to experiment with, especially for someone like me who usually avoids brights. Mascara is W4NDER Mile High Club.

Verdict: I absolutely loved this collection! When I first heard about this collab I was a little confused, but they really nailed it! Both of the glosses are beautiful alone or layered and the sheerness makes them incredibly versatile. The lip balm trios were also understated, but utterly wearable! I thought the different colored cored were visually brilliant. The palettes were by far the highlights for me because the color combos were just insane in the best way, a careful mixture of bold and bright, with grounding neutrals to give balance. Including a little brush set was as thoughtful as it was practical because you can immediately start experimenting with those incredible shades. Though the highlighter is not something I think I can wear, I am still so impressed by it! My only complaints were that the names of each lip product were not on the bottom info sticker, making it hard to figure out which shade was which if you open a few items at once. I do wish they had also included a few super bold/crazy lipsticks and eyeliners, but maybe that is something that could happen someday in the future. For now, I am pretty smitten with all of the different pieces of this collections that seamlessly fit together. (See what I did there?)

To Wrap Up:

I love natural/vegan beauty products, Korean skincare, unique jewelry, and weird candies from far away places. When I am not waiting for my next exciting box you can find me painting or taking photographs of interesting people. I never leave home without pug hair somewhere on my shirt and a bold lipstick on my smile.

Love Love Love this lipstick where can I purchase it

I really liked the collection but the lip balms were really soft. Two of mine broke at the base (easy enough to fix but just a little annoying)

Might also be because it’s been over 100 degrees where I am. Maybe they need some time in the freezer.

Ordered June 1, received shipping notice June received the box today, June 14.

I checked over all my items thoroughly (I’ve seen smashed shadows & even a broken palette mirror on reddit) & found a small black fleck of something embedded in the side of my Mad Skills lip balm. I sent a photo to ipsycare along with the explanation & request for a replacement. I received this response a few hours later: “wish I could send a replacement, but we’re out of inventory. I’d be happy to give you a partial refund of $4.82 for the trouble.”

Um. Girl. I do not believe for a SECOND that ipsy is completely out of Mad Skills lip balm. At this point, I’d rather have the refund, tbh, cause that thing smells very strongly of fake vanilla to me. This just reconfirms my suspicion that ipsy has been lying to customers that they don’t have replacements, specifically for Shopper orders, for about the last year & a half. I had NO troubles getting replacements before then.

Hey guys I was wondering if I should get the Tetris collection on ipsy? Still deciding if I should get it? Everything looks so cute though!! I really want the whole collection hehehe 😁😄😋😍🤪

Patricia S Garrett

I will be getting the standalone Block Party palette as part of my GBPlus this month. I wonder if it is worth holding on to it, unopened to sell as a collector’s item later?

Reply ButtonReply

Justjamey

Would people really collect something like this?! I know things like game of thrones/ urban decay type things and some of the older kat von d are collectors…but do people really think this is something people will collect?! I’m so curious to know what others think….

Reply ButtonReply

Hunter Lee

I am still awaiting my collection for TETRIS, but I will comment that this is absolutely something people will collect. The marketing alone on this is a big turn on and this review really reinforces its worth. I think a lot of people are scared of the golds/yellows, but you don’t have to be! You just have to distort things to work for you rather than against you.

The reviewer makes me happy because our eye color is a super similar hazel, but mine has slightly more green than this. It looks like it would easily accommodate a range of coloring. Thank you for the closeups! Stunning.

Dot

Thinking the same exact thing, I won’t use it but don’t want to sell it either and since eyeshadows have long shelf life if kept in right condition ie. no humidity , and sanitary upkeep , I’ll probably just hold onto mine I got block party which look like great colors, but could never pull off I’d look like a clown lol. But the packing is just so kawaii 😁

LillyB

I love the pics of the shadows on your eyes so much! The colors in the palettes are so beautiful, but it’s hard to know how to wear them without looking ridiculous. But I can totally see myself copying this, especially with the gorgeous teal color! Can’t wait to get my palettes!

Reply ButtonReply

Megan K.

Thank you Lilly! I appreciate that because I felt out of my depth. I really loved experimenting with those colors though!

love the eyeshadow pics on your eyes. really gives a good idea of color pay off better than swatches.

Omg I was charged for GBP and GB before I could pause the GBP for the month of June. I got boxyluxe this month and I didn’t want any of this Tetris mess and they charged my card way before midnight. 😣 oh well I just hope there are some other products I like from GBP. Ill be happy to get the Sunday Riley or skin111. I’m just really not feeling tetris beauty …. Ill play all day long but ehhh…. And I got the ugliest color orange bag for GB haha…..just my luck.

Reply ButtonReply

Lynn

I was on the waitlist for GBP.. and thought.. thank goodness, don’t have to worry.. I didn’t want any that that stuff… then… I came home from work on 8/31 to discover I had an email that said.. wow.. I got off the GBP waitlist… when I went in to “skip” the month.. it said you had to do it by 12 pm … UMMMMM… I did’t get my “you’re off the waitlist” email until 3:11 pm!!! I didn’t want any of this mess.. I too, am already getting Boxyluxe this month.. didn’t want to spend the money for this stuff.. oh brother. Oh.. well maybe I will find at least a few things in this mess that I may enjoy.

Reply ButtonReply

Leslie J

I know!! So crazy how that happens. It was like 8 pm on the 31st when I got charged! I was like ohhhhh k! I guess I will be getting it then! I’m just really excited for boxyluxe this month I really wanted the hair dryer. My box subscriptions are getting expensive girl! Its kind of like Christmas every month though 😘

Patricia S Garrett

This Tetris x Ipsy stuff is collector’s items. They may turn out to be worth something more someday.

Charlotte

Leslie, I tried to pause too (actually, my account was already paused, but then I got off the waitlist for GBP and that somehow…magically unpaused it), but found it now says on the site that you have to pause by 12PM ET on the last day of the month (e.g. May 31st). Just a heads-up for people – like me – who tend to procrastinate on stuff like that.

Reply ButtonReply

Leslie J

Yea girl me too I was about to pause it and it was like 8 pm 😱 on may 31st. I was like welp…I guess I’m getting it this month 😳

Dani

How do you already know which color bag you got?

Reply ButtonReply

Leslie J

When you look at the app whatever bag you see on the glam bag page is the color you get. Hope this helps 🙂

Mee

If you scroll down the GB page, it shows a bag on the bottom. Mine also shows orange, but hopefully that’s just a placeholder for the real bag color.

Nikki

Me too!!! I thought I skipped and I went to check to make sure last night and it was already charged. I’m just looking at it like something fun to try! 🤞

Reply ButtonReply

Leslie J

I know right! I guess I’m ok with the fact that I got the 111skin and added on Sunday Riley. Hope you got something you liked!

It’s on Ipsy shopper right now!

Idk how to feel about this collab myself? I’m almost 40 and although I did play Tetris when it came out on NES as a child, I really don’t want to carry around Tetris products in my bag with me at my age now. I feel I’ve completely grown out of it and it just doesn’t give a feeling of sophistication at all. I’m sure I have many other brands and products in these same shades that will perform the same if not better than this collab. I’m not saying the products are not good. I’m just saying it’s not for me at my age now.

Reply ButtonReply

Christy

I’m almost 40 myself but after a health scare, have skipped right to the F it stage. Life’s too short to worry about “acting my age” or what others think about me, which I’m sure is often not very much at all!

Reply ButtonReply

Stephanie

I’m nearly 41. Everything doesn’t have to be sophisticated and mature. Chill out, grab something colorful to put on, and enjoy life. We’re about half dead anyway. Why not enjoy the time we have left. Who cares what others think. I’ll shove Tetris lip balm into my Hello Kitty makeup bag that I keep in my Pokemon purse. Live a little. Everything doesn’t have to be brown and boring.

Reply ButtonReply

Meg

THIS! I couldn’t agree more. Thank you! My current favorite quote (courtesy of RuPaul) “What people think of me is NONE of my business”. But seriously women need to stop constantly judging each other and feeling judged. We’re in this together and who knows for how long so let’s have some fun and stop being boring.

Dot

Oh Stephanie that just made me laugh hard ! Rofl ! So true though who cares the age if people can rock it ! Do so girls 🤣 ps I still have and love my Pokémon backpack 😍

LillyB

Yes! I didn’t play much with makeup when I was younger but now at 45 am having so much fun getting these subscription boxes and loving it! And since I’m old enough to have played Tetris when it was new, excited to see this. Mixing up fun and sophisticated and enjoying everything!

Natalieee

I absolutely LOVE your comment Stephanie. I’m about to hit my 40’s and I’ve finally learned life isn’t about impressing others, it’s about living the short life we have to the fullest.

amyr

Stephanie 😂🤣😂

Funniest comment ever!

amyr

Don’t worry – when you get to be 60 plus you will just do what you want. I am no longer serious because life is too short! I love the collection but I honestly love sophisticated as well. I just like the happy colors in this one.

Still love my Chanel and Guerlain though! I think I am just a makeup addict!

Reply ButtonReply

Hallie Gottlieb

I’m 54 and in the F it stage too.haha. I want cute silly bright items as much as I want Tom Ford.

Retpunzel

It would be nice if they sold the brush set separately. That’s the only other thing I’d like other than a lip balm and the purple palette

Reply ButtonReply

Sabipsy

The brush set is available as an add on!.

Zo

Great review, Megan. I especially love the close up of the looks you created with the eyes. I am very excited to get one of these palettes in my IGBP next month. If they have the lip items as add-ons I’ll be a happy camper.

Reply ButtonReply

Megan K.

Thank you, Zo! I was a little nervous about them (because some of those shades are way out of my wheelhouse!) so that that is good to hear! <3

While the collaboration between ipsy and tetris is a cool idea, I am so glad I skipped this month.

Reply ButtonReply

Lily

FWIW, I am not endorsing the purchase, but the entire collection is visible on the Shopper part of Ipsy for $39.99 starting in 24 hours from right now.

If this is what some of you like and want, good luck. Seriously. 😉

Thank you for the heads up! ❤️

Didn’t they tell us that the Glam Bag Plus would contain only name brand products? This is ” No name” IPSY sourced Made in China products.

I have a feeling there are going to be some very disappointed millennials, and I think some of this review was emotionally based on a sentimental game memory, not the actual products.

I don’t want it and I don’t know how to get out of it. If I skip the stuff in June, I’ll just get it in July. That’s how IPSY works, as far as I can tell.
I definitely don’t want any of it for any month. Made in China, the entire collection, with no known brand behind it is really bad, IMO.

Reply ButtonReply

mt

uh, millennials played tetris. Millennials are currently between the ages of 23 and 38, lol.

Reply ButtonReply

Lily

Yep, that’s exactly why I said ” some millennials may be disappointed”. It was a way of referencing the target market for the Tetris makeup, you see. 😉

I’m a Baby Boomer who was handed a now- priceless Barbie at the end of my first day of first grade. 🙂 She’s exactly my age.
I’m not at all interested the things my mid- 30’s son was or is in passing: old computers, vintage or game console games, Cabbage Patch Kids mass produced by Coleco, Beanie Babies, ” My Little Pony” or ” Hello Kitty”. My offspring, the biggest disappointment in my life personality- wise as he’s such a self- proclaimed super duper genius snowflake, played Tetris on his Gameboy when he was a toddler. He was bored with it by the age of 2 and a half.

Most of us DO know the designations for the different generations, as we read news and topical discussion of popular culture and trends down through the past 100 years to the present.

Did you know the Gen Xers and Millennials are said to be responsible for a huge downturn in the stock of the following US products and brands?
Diet Pepsi, Budweiser, Harley- Davidson, The GAP and its subsidiaries, Victoria’s Secret, boxed traditional breakfast cereals like Wheaties and Frosted Flakes, and 3 items I would’ve thought to be extinct way before now: Tupperware, Jell-o gelatin in the box, and Campbell’s Soups.

I’m in total agreement with the choices of people half my age. Those are some more over-priced products in some cases, and just tired old boring crap in others. It’s like me remembering that my parents ( both born into the Greatest Generation) liked fried Spam sandwiches every now and then at a time when my father owned a 2,000 acre prime Angus beef stock farm and we dined in some of the best restaurants in Europe on vacations.

Dani

I feel exactly the same. I kind of liked it at first because as a late 80’s/early 90’s kid it was quite nostalgic for me. Plus Tetris is the only game I still like to play once in a while. I thought one of the palettes had some cute colors and I liked two of the lip balms. And the regular Ipsy bags are cute. I was actually going to get 2 regular and 2 Plus subs for June so I could give my younger sister the 2nd set. Once I found out they were tested on animals as all beauty products in China are, I canceled all but one Plus for June. Like you said, I could skip but would likely get a palette next month anyway. I’ve been so pleased with Ipsy lately but this is very disappointing.

Reply ButtonReply

Rachel

Hey Megan! Thanks for the review! I still play Tetris (now on a simulator), and it’s my favorite stress relief brain drain game–i joined ipsy because of the first spoiler about the line. Now that its bearing and I could purchase a box, I realized that nothing has ingredients listed…were they on the boxes or package? I have a paraben allergy, which means I occasionally have to give a sample away…but I’d hate to get the box and then learn about it.

Reply ButtonReply

Megan K.

Hey Rachel! Just added close up ingredient shots for you. Hope they help! Please let me know if I can answer any additional questions 🙂

Reply ButtonReply

Rachel Nicole Aker

Thanks Lily and Megan! I sincerely appreciate the extra effort to type up instructions to look at them (I kept going to the shopper page), and to post the photos of the ingredients. <3

Lily

You can go into the Ipsy deals for sale, not the actual ” name brand” shopper part but the part on your Ipsy home page, and click on a product for sale now.

Once you have that product up, you’ll see ” other items you might be interested in” at the bottom and the Tetris collection is the obnoxious blinking thing on the carousel.

If there are Parabens or other things you can’t use in the ingredients list, you can see them because there’s a page long list of ingredients of all the collection, separated by color product or palette.

Not a fan of any of it actually and hate the idea that it will be taking up valuable space in my bag. Some of the bag colors are nice so I don’t mind the bag itself. I am a skin care fan so really prefer to get as many skin care products as possible. So, I’m anxious to see the bag reveal.

Reply ButtonReply

Megan K.

Totally second NewBeauty TestTube if you want crazy amounts of skincare. I also lean more towards that direction than makeup, so I get it! <3

Reply ButtonReply

Flora

Since you prefer skincare, do you also sub to another box/boxes? There are better subs for skincare (Beautyfix, Testtube, Pearlesque, Boxwalla, etc). I find that Ipsy only gives me 1-2 skincare items at best (sometimes none) and I don’t expect it to meet my skincare needs.

Reply ButtonReply

Annie S.

Do you have to be an Ipsy subscriber to buy in their shop?
I’m still mulling over whether I should subscribe or not.

Reply ButtonReply

amyr

Yes you have to have an active subscription to buy from the Ipsy Shopper. You either have to join or have an account with a month you are skipping.

Reply ButtonReply

Jessica

No, actually you used to have to have an accont to use shopper, but recently they changed it so anyone can use it. However members get %10 off

amyr

I meant a month you are not skipping or paused. Sorry about that!

Joan

Way too expensive. This box is worthy of a $19.99 price tag. Because it has the name Tetris attached to it, they can have a small upcharge bringing the price to S24.99 (max!). Easy pass for me.

This box makes me feel old too, lol. Nothing appeals to me except maybe the berry colored lip balm sticks , even the brushes look cheap. The lippies should be squared edges to resemble the Tetris “stick” block.

And if theyre going to go with the Tetris theme, why not go all the way with 1) the actual Tetris colors (since theyre going BRIGHT anyway), 2) go with a verticle palette to resemble the actual game, 3) inside go with eyeshadow pans shaped to look like Tetris falling blocks or Tetris blocks stacked. Just my idea 🙂

Reply ButtonReply

Dani

Fantastic idea for the palettes!!! They’d look so much better, so much more genuine that way! These only have a tetris-like design on the front. They could’ve done so much more! The lip balm shape you suggested would be cute too. Maybe even in a rectangle tube—kinda like a smaller Pez dispenser maybe?
And I definitely don’t see a connection with the silver and gold lip glosses other than the rectangular containers, but that’s super common for lip products anyway.

Reply ButtonReply

Lisa

I am actually shocked it is only $40 I figured it would be between $50-$100 when I saw Ipsy offer video. The palettes alone are probably worth $15-$20 each.

Reply ButtonReply

Karen

Hi Megan!
Did you actually apply the shadows to your eyes or just swatch them? Would be interested in seeing a look/how they apply to the eyes and if they have staying power. Swatches look great but we all know sometimes shadows that look great swatched can barely show up on the lids…

Wouldve liked to see a more cool toned highlighter for paler skin as well. I couldnt wear that shade of gold either.

Reply ButtonReply

Megan K.

Hey Karen! I just added two looks, one for each palette. Bear with me, I NOT a makeup artist! I tend to apply shadows lightly in general, but I tried to be a little bolder to show off the colors! I even tried out the gold highlighter in the second look since we have similar skin tones. I hope this helps, and thanks for the suggestion.

You did a fantastic job Megan! Love the unique but very wearable looks you created! It’s pretty clear you have an art background given how creative you are.
