Pet Treater
3.3 overall rating

Pet Treater is a subscription box for dogs. Select from small (up to 20 pounds), medium (21-50 pounds), and large (51+ pounds), along with the $15 a month Dog Pack or $25 a month Deluxe Dog Pack options.

This review is for a large dog, $25 a month Deluxe Dog Pack box. My dog Nyx, a Rottweiler, is about 86 pounds right now.

My Subscription Addiction paid for this subscription. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes.)

Pet Treater April 2019 Review

There’s not a traditional information card with this subscription so there’s not always a stated theme, but you will occasionally see some commonalities running throughout the box contents (there was no theme this month):

Pet Treater April 2019 - Booklet Front Pet Treater April 2019 - Booklet Back Pet Treater April 2019 - Ad 1 Pet Treater April 2019 - Ad 2

There isn’t an item list with this subscription (it is my understanding some items may vary), but you usually get a picture of a dog. There’s also sometimes an ad or a bit of product literature.

Pet Treater April 2019 - Claw

Dogzilla Dino Claw – Retail Value $7.99 (found here for $5.52)

This is a rubber claw combined with a tennis ball.  Seems like a good idea, right? Well. Nyx got this and she says: “You know what we do with tennis balls? We eat the coating off them.” And that’s what she proceeded to do. This lasted all of about 3 minutes before I had to take it away.

Pet Treater April 2019 - Cookie

Emmy’s Gourmet Canine Creations Rainbow Cookie – Estimated Value $1.35

This particular design was not available in the Emmy’s shop (Pet Treater usually sends a custom cookie from Emmy’s) but their other individual cookies go for $1.35. One thing I do really like about these as opposed to some other dog boxes is YOU GET AN INGREDIENTS LIST. This is so important for homemade treats and even though it seems like a really basic thing, some dog boxes don’t send the ingredients. Anyway, I really appreciate that.

Pet Treater April 2019 - Flamingo

Petlou Flamingo – Listed Retail Value $11.48

This didn’t come with its product label, but there was a tag on the side with a manufacturer name, so I located the item that way. Nyx thought this was pretty awesome (you can see some pictures of her with it below) and it lasted through several play sessions.

Pet Treater April 2019 - Hips Joints

The Missing Link Once Daily Superfood Dental Chew for Hips and Joints (LG/XL, 14 count) – Retail Value $17.99

This appears to have undergone a packaging change recently, so this is probably older stock, though it was not yet expired.  These have ridges that are supposed to help clean the teeth, plus they have vitamin C, omega 3 and omega 6 fatty acids, and glucosamine.  They’re made in the USA (sourced from the USA and Canada) without artificial colors, flavors, or preservatives. Because these are older stock and lack preservatives, I’d feed them to your dog sooner rather than later.

Pet Treater April 2019 - Skin Coat

The Missing Link Once Daily Superfood Dental Chew for Skin and Coat (LG/XL, 14 count) – Retail Value $16.99

These are quite similar to the ones above with the exception that they don’t have added glucosamine. The omega 3 and 6 fatty acids are from flax, which is honestly a bit strange since, at least in humans, flax omegas are inefficiently converted to the active forms, and dogs don’t mind fish oil. All the same things can be said about ingredient quality as with those shown above, and these also appear to have changed packaging recently so the same warning about feeding sooner rather than later applies.

Pet Treater April 2019 - Odor

Nature’s Miracle Wet Dog Odor Remover (16 fl oz) – Retail Value $10.99

This is also old stock. This product has undergone a packaging change as well as a name change. (It is only sold by third-party sellers on Amazon, and closeout suppliers.) This is meant to remove odors caused by dirty water from lakes, ponds, and creeks. While our backyard does back up to a rather large creek, I am pretty sure Nyx would never actually swim in it (Rotties hate water, in my experience). However, sometimes Nyx gets that “wet dog smell” after a bath and it kind of pervades the first floor of the house, so I will have to try this out after her next bath (she hasn’t had one since I received this box) or possibly after her next walk in the rain. This is supposed to work enzymatically (like other Nature’s Miracle products) but I do note it also contains fragrance, so there may be some coverup involved as well.

Pet Treater April 2019 - Kerchief 1 Pet Treater April 2019 - Kerchief 2 Pet Treater April 2019 - Kerchief 3

Kerchief

I am showing you three pictures of this because, while the fabric is cute, this is clearly just purchased from a store that sells quilt fabric and (poorly) cut into triangles. The edges are not finished at all, other than how the fabric at the edge of the bolt of fabric has been finished. If your dog wears this a lot, it is going to fray.

Pet Treater April 2019 - Nyx 1 Pet Treater April 2019 - Nyx 2 Pet Treater April 2019 - Nyx 3 Pet Treater April 2019 - Nyx 4 Pet Treater April 2019 - Nyx 5

Nyx liked the flamingo toy. She liked the claw toy, too, but spent the entire time she had it trying to pull the fuzzy surface off the tennis ball (she succeeded in just a few minutes) so there aren’t good pictures of that.

Verdict: There were 7 items in the April 2019 Pet Treater box, for an average value of about $3.57. The kerchief wasn’t available online, nor was the rainbow cookie, and the Nature’s Miracle product is only sold by closeout suppliers and third-party sellers on Amazon so the value for that one is iffy. I’d say this was pretty representative in terms of contents, with two different styles of toys, two treats, an Emmy’s cookie, a supply, and one more item. Nyx always loves the toys in this box, and they are generally size-appropriate (I understand that smaller dogs get the same toys, often, so that may be something you want to consider before signing up).

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? No, your subscription would start with the May box.

Value Breakdown: At $25 for the box, you are paying about $3.57 per item.

Vantha

Hey! This is Vantha from Pet Treater. Thank you for your honest review. I just wanted to clarify one comment – the toys will not be the same for each size dog. We tailor the toys to the size you select for your dog. Simply, a large dog won’t receive a small dog’s plush toy, and vice versa. We hand curate every box to the dog size ordered.

The bandana is a single use – you get a new one every month, so make sure to throw it away when it’s dirty or too-far-gone. You will more than likely get another one!

Thank you!
