Facet Jewelry Box is a new subscription box from the editors at Facet Jewelry and Bead & Button magazine. They offer two versions, the “Quick and Easy Stringing” version, and the “Bead Stitching Version,” so you can choose a subscription based on your skill level and interests, as well as the amount of time you want to invest in the projects.

This is a review of the “Bead Stitching” version (both versions cost the same).

Facet Jewelry Box provided this box at no cost for review purposes. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes.)

Facet Jewelry Box Bead Stitching April 2019 Review

I am never sure whether I’ll be working on a project for days or just a few hours with this subscription. Let's see what this month has to offer!

The first thing you see when you open the box is this full-color booklet. I haven’t shown you all of the pages inside, because part of the subscription fee is for the projects that are included.

(Lately, I’ve been noticing some of the projects are from older issues of Bead and Button magazine, so if you’d like to do some similar projects, check out this series of books, especially numbers 10 and 11.)

This is a really nice-looking booklet, honestly, but I’d expect nothing less from the folks at Bead & Button (I’ve been a subscriber for a while now). There are also links to online resources if you need a little help with a technique.

Framed Bracelet

This month, we made two bracelets. This first one took a lot less time! A clasp, some bead frames, some fire polished rounds, some size 11/0 seed beads, and some Miyuki squares (which are actually cubes, despite the name) were provided in mostly shades of purple. Please note, you don’t specify a metal finish for the findings, and you’ll receive a variety of different colors. These are silver-plated.

I don’t have a lot to say about this one. It was quick to make and the directions were clear and plenty of beads were provided. The frame motif is something I will play around with further, perhaps with some of the one-hole halo beads from Potomac.

Woven Diamonds Bracelet

This bracelet took a ton of time but the instructions were easy to follow. This one used several sizes of seed beads, including some Miyuki spacers which I had not had a chance to work with before, as well as some small Swarovski crystals. This took me maybe four sessions to complete although I couldn’t estimate a time frame because a session might’ve been 20 minutes or an hour, depending on my mood and the amount of time I had available. This one was easy to split up, though.

If you get this box and haven’t started yet, I’d suggest making a few of the initial elements and linking them together before going for all 13 elements they suggest making, because then you can get a sense of how many you actually need to make, rather than spending the time and finding out you’ve made more than necessary.

Plenty of beads were provided for this one, too, and I had extras of everything at the end. I think this one would be interesting to do in different colors for a different look and I do have lots of all of these beads in other colors and finishes.

Verdict: I did not calculate a value for Facet Jewelry Box, but you get the materials and instructions for making two complete pieces of jewelry. I was happy with the instructions and all of the materials provided this month (including the amounts, and that we got size 11 needles to go with 6lb Fireline, so threading was easy).

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? Boxes go out after the 20th and people who sign up before the 15th will get that month’s box. If you sign up after the 15th, you may still be able to get that month’s box but this is not guaranteed.

Value Breakdown: At $24.95 per box, you are paying about $12.48 per project.

Received my first stringing box. As once again, I am just as disappointed with this box as I was the bead weaving box. I should have learned from the first bead weaving box that the project and materials are cheap and not worth $25 .I will be cancelling my subscription and spent that money at my local bead shop and get a lot more there than the pitiful smattering of materials contained in the Facet Jewelry Box.

Ragan, I just want you to know I’ve been thinking about you and hope you are doing okay with loosing Mr. Kitty. We loved him from afar, so please take care of yourself. You are always so kind, taking time to thoroughly answer everyone’s questions and provide detailed reviews. I know there is little we can say or do, but know that we are all thinking of you. I say we, because I am certain I’m not the only one.

Lovely bracelets!

@Ragan, another great review! I especially like the frame bracelet. I don’t know how you find the time to make so much jewelry each month!

I also wanted to ask if you might be able to help me with an MSA site problem: I’ve emailed MSA (as instructed on website) a large number of times over 2+ months, trying to get two boxes listed on the swap site, but nothing has happened; the boxes have not been listed, but more disturbing is that I’ve never gotten an answer to any of my emails. That makes me wonder if perhaps my messages are not getting through.

The two boxes are Gingiber’s Zest for Your Nest (https://gingiber.com/collections/new/products/zest-box) and Matter (https://www.boxofmatter.com).

Don’t know if you need it, but my swap profile is https://swap.mysubscriptionaddiction.com/user/25508/profile.

Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated. THANK YOU!

I don’t actually have anything to do with the swap site but I will send an email too if it helps.

Thanks! I got a response and the boxes should be listed on the swap site in a day or so.

Turns out my emails WERE going to spam (I’m not sure why). So Ragan your email to them was what I needed – Just a way to get through and alert them to the issue. Thanks again.!

Oh I would like to see the Box of Matter reviewed that looks neat!

And beautiful work Ragan!

I’ve subbed to Matter for 3 or 4 months now, and it was “nice” but this last box really blew me away – it was really fabulous.

Looking forward to more reviews of this box. As usual, you did a lovely job. This might be one box I could actually use to try to get started with a jewelry-making hobby.

If you are really new, they also have a bead stringing version where the projects are a little less complicated (but still lovely). All you will need for either version are some pliers (there are decent sets available on Amazon for ~$25 with roundnose, flatnose, chainnose, bent chainnose, and wire cutters) and some scissors, and some of those foamy beading mats like I have in my materials pictures are also useful, as well as a tray to put them in (I use cafeteria-style trays but nearly any flat surface with raised edges will work). They have links to videos and/or further information in the instructions if you need extra help with a technique.
